I've had roommates that seemed like aliens from outer space cause there was no way to relate, and then I've had a few amazing roommates who just made life easier and/or more fun. Just be careful. My latest, I found on craigslist and he's really great.

It's quite difficult to find good roommates (flatmates/housemates). Seemingly nice people can turn into scary freaks. Years ago the morning after my first night at a new place, I woke up naked being watched... I moved out the very same day. Lost money, dignity, trust...

I think it is time for you to move, there are other cities who are open to alternative lifestyles. The city I am in and my work place are much more open than I thought it would be when I moved here. You shouldn't limit yourself to NY or San Fran, even though NY is a great city.
