  • una interpretazione maestosa e contrita, quasi un rivolgersi a Dio per una richiesta di grazia ...

    carlo

  • love the arrangement. simply amazing!

  • Denyce is amazing... but, is Bush over there sleeping??!! Damn "W"! LMBO

  • ABSOLUTELY EXQUISITE. I am Jewish but will start going to Church if I hear music sung like this!!!!!! You are beautiful and the most gorgeous voice in the world - so rich and warm. Thank you also for your kind FB friendship.

May G-d Bless you and yours always,

    Barbara Todres/NYC

  • Very Touching, so beautiful, hard to get through without crying.

  • Beautiful! No other way to say it. Very spiritualy moving! Dr. Douglas Major at organ did a beautiful job. Thank-You both for the beauty of your music!

  • Wow!!!

  • So touching. Even more so when you consider when it was sung.

  • This was so moving. Brings me to tears. I think some other people teared up as well.

  • OUTSTANDING!

  • You can watch the whole service at the C-SPAN website, and Denyce's incredible version of "America the Beautiful" is at approx. 56:00 in.

Look for National Prayer Service Sep 14, 2001

  • @MedusaA

Thanks Medusa. I've included a link in the video comments.

  • The second phase "which art in heaven" OMG....so gorgeous

  • I have never heard anyone else sing "The Lord's Prayer" as masterfully as Denyce Graves.

  • So beautiful, thank you.

  • I sang here two weeks ago during both morning and evensong services. I kept thinking about how Ms Graves sang here so beautifully ten years before to comfort a nation in mourning and grief. The Cathedral is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places that I have ever been. It made me so sad to learn the Cathedral was damaged in an earthquake today and even more sad when people ignorant about the purpose of this particular cathedral rejoiced in its damage.

  • If you don't like please don't comment and who dislikes a prayer anyway?? Seven people suck!!!

  • I was on vacation in Italy when 9/11 happened. I was scheduled to return from Italy on the Friday after 9/11. Obviously we didn't fly since the Airspace was closed. My wife and I sat the entire day in the Alitalia lounge watching the TV. In the evening the memorial service from the National Cathedral was broadcast. When I heard Ms. Graves sing The Lords Prayer I was profoundly moved. There wasn't a dry eye in the lounge. I still think back in awe of Denyce Graves.

  • This is the most moving rendition of this song, even of her own recording. Likely it is the combination of the ethereally talented Ms Graves rising to the occasion @ the funeral of a great man, & her singing in her own native city in the one of the lovliest & solemnest sanctuaries...the acoustics of the cathedral & the instruments with her voice are almost other worldly. It never fails to bring me to tears & sometimes to my knees. It is the one I always share.

  • @pttibg Better than Andrea Botticelli with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? I think that has to be the best version of this song period.

  • @scatmanwfm BoTTIcelli????? LMAO

  • You are wonderful. The organist is very talented as well.

  • made a lasting impression when I saw this back then live on tv

  • Good singers always make it look so nice and easy :)

  • gave me chills throughout the whole song! amen!!!!!!!!!

  • Very beautifully sung. Thank-you.

  • I pray and beg forgiveness while this song plays. I miss Denyce's sister Deborah and would give anything to see her again!

  • I wish she sang this acapella. This is so incredible but just to hear her voice alone would be heavenly.

  • I recall she also performed a stirring "America the Beautiful" - - I think with acoustic guitar accompaniment - her husband.(?) Anyone know of a recording or video of that??

  • @bobrocht

    (remove spaces)

  • @Salmagundiii ??? amazon, youtube??

  • @bobrocht

Ms. Graves has an album titled "American Anthem" available as an Amazon mp3 download. (probably on itunes as well)

  • @Salmagundiii Thanks - I did see that one. I was curious if anyone had the actual recording or video from the post-9/11 event. With the acoustic guitar-only accompaniment. The Amazon one is great - studio quality obviously, but there was something I recall spontaneously touching about the Washington Cathedral performance.

  • @bobrocht you mean her ex husband ?

  • @bobrocht no doubt bro , i'm trying to find that myself . No luck so far.

  • And the glory! Fantastic!!

  • just beautiful!!!

  • First time I ever saw her was at this performance. I was totally blown away even before she sang. I will never forget her.

    THANK YOU! Ms Graves!

  • A magnificient rendition of this song! Ms. Graves, you made an unforgetable, beautiful performance. Thank you.

  • THANK YOU for giving credit to the composer. This is still under copyright . G. Schirmer

  • Amen, Amen, GOD Speed.

  • soo pretty. and talented.

  • Why when it was the climax of the song was the camera all up on the audience/congregation? SMH!

Incredibly beautiful rendition by Denyce Graves...and that's all I wanted and needed to see not Mr Bush and Co.

  • @JonathanGardnerTV my sentiments exactly.

  • I wish the cameraman focused more on Ms. Graves.

  • I've heard this song performed poorly so many times, I'm jaded by it but Denyce Graves SO does not over-sing it, I'll listen to her version anytime.

  • @rogelioconejo Marilyn HOrne has a very good version too. On a double CD

  • Denyce and Renee Fleming are my favorite Sopranos

  • I would say....adequate!....she does not ruin it!...thankfully.

  • Do we know which key she was doing???

  • @zunigaliza B Major

  • I cry every single time I hear Denyce sing this..so beautiful.

  • @TalonsUniverse2012 This has the same effect on me everytime I see and hear her sing it!. I have yet to have it bring such emotion by any other vocalist. I'm not sure if it's the way Denyce sings it or if it's what it represented when she sang it or possibly both.

  • She's beautiful and has a beautiful voice....any man would be so lucky to have her.

  • she's beautiful.

  • future political remarks will be deleted

  • Stunning. How beautiful and reverent.

  • Let's chill on the political talk, or I'll start modding. Thanks.

  • @kkwilson27 Why are you injecting political comments into a video of Denyce Graves singing the Lords Prayer. I don't disagree with anything you said, just the place you used to get your point accross.

  • superior bravo.

  • @kkwilson27

Spoken like a true Cristian. Not

  • she sounds wonderful..and the organ accompanies her very well...

  • This was sung just after 9/11

  • She is so beautiful, her voice is so beautiful !!!

  • OMG!

  • I remember watching this on the day it all transpired and falling in love with this voice. It is because of Ms. Graves that I study and sing opera. No doubt I owe her a great debt of thanks.

  • She's beautiful and so is her voice.

  • She sang this at the arrival of His Holinesses Pope Benedict XVI's in America.

  • @dacatholicbandorgan that was Kathleen Battle, who is a light lyric coloratura. This is Denyce Graves- mezzo. Completely different...

  • @1laboheme Also completely different people. Certain people can't tell the difference. Hmm...wonder why?

  • Comment removed

  • @1laboheme, thanks for the info, I will look for the other singer too. I did like this one, also a mezzo, not a singer though, although I would love to sing like this, what a talent.

  • @dacatholicbandorgan Apparently you think there is only one African-American female opera singer. I must inform you, there are quite a few and there always have been.

Not only do Kathleen Battle and Denyce Graves look different(a surprise to you I guess) but there is quite an age difference between them. Please get your facts straight before commenting.

  • @charm1950, thanks for the info, I will look for the other singer too. I did like this one.

  • First time I saw this video--it made me cry. The sorrow and sadness. We are still feeling it. HOPE, FAITH and BELIEVE we are all going to make it. BEAUTIFUL VOICE.......MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL and hope for the best.

  • Look at Bill! lol

  • whats wrong with him?

  • look at him singing along I thought it was nice that he was so into the performance he is into music as well you know he plays the alto sax I believe

  • I don't think he was singing, so much as he was in AWE of Ms. Graves' superb voice.

  • whatever works I love Ms Graves

  • An incredible rendering of one of my favorite pieces. I just wish the camera had stayed more on Miss Graves and not on the politians.

  • I agree.

  • BEAUTIFUL VOICE

  • Great! Wonderful! Classy!

  • This is the true american people !

  • this is such a lovely rendition of the Lord's Prayer... thank you, Lord for the such powerful voices to sing praises up to your Name...

  • Does Anyone know where i can get or buy Denyce Graves Breaking the Rules

I can't find and really really want it...please help

  • You should look up Felicia Coleman on myspace and listen to her singing the Lord's prayer. Immaculate and untouchable

  • 2:37 is the best part to me.

  • What a masterfully emotive performance. Every time I view this video I am moved...

  • wow

  • This prayer and song can keep your life on the right track forever. Christ in you the hope of glory!

  • OMG! I cried through this entire song. It was just too beautiful and she is sooo gorgeous, too.

  • By far, one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Gives me chills everytime.

  • i guess they were not suppose to clap at the end lol

  • Of course not. You aren't supposed to clap in church.

  • glad I go to a church where clapping is permitted!

  • Idk wat church u go to but at my church we love to clap our hands for JESUS Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!

  • I went to a conservative baptist church...conservative that is in our manners. No matter how great the solo or how moving the sermon...it would be met with Amen, but no clapping. Some churches nowadays have bands and all of that and that is cool...just not the church I was brought up in. I can do without all that hootin and hollarin

  • Well wateva floats ur boat as long as u gettin the word and u understand the purpose of goin to church in the first place. We all there for one reason. I hope.

  • Bless your heart.

  • This prayer --The Our Father -- was given to the followers of Jesus when they asked JESUS how to pray ... Jesus is One with the Fatehr and the Holy Spirit--in the mystery of the Trinity ..

    (ONE GOD IN THREE PERSONAGES)

John 14 King James Bible says:

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me:

IF YOU DONT BELIEVE IN THE DIVINITY OF JESUS - YOU MUST BELIEVE HIM TO BE A MADMAN -- FOR THE THINGS HE SAID AND DID ARE RADICAL.. not sheer "prophet" STUFF .

  • this is how a song is sung

  • Hey genius

If you read the narrative, you would see that Jesus is teaching his disciples how to pray. The idea of God as Father, or Abba is new with Jesus.

Jesus is co-equal with God the Creator, and God the Spirit.

  • Denyce Graves is truely blessed with a voice from Heaven. I have never heard a voice as beautiful as hers.

  • Wow, was für eine Stimme, phänomenal. Da fliessen Tränen bei dem Gesang, toll.

  • to me, she is the best female to sing this and the best male has to be mario lanza. both awesome.

  • Absolutely beautiful... It brought tears to my eyes.

  • A truly elegant and beautiful lady with an incredible voice. God bless you Denyce Graves.

  • Very well done, Denyce Graves, very well done.

  • That performance was incredible. Vocalist and organist are both gifted.

  • Who arranged this, I would love to sing this but its hard to find this particular arrangement.

  • This arrangement is very popular by ...Albert Hay Malotte...it is printed in 5keys and also instrumental arrangements....Ms. Graves is absolutely glorious..she is singing it in Medium key of C....I am also a Mezzo...it's a wonderful key and arrangement...one of my favorite songs of all time

  • Shattinger's Music in St Louis MO will probably have this arrangement 314.621.2408

  • What a voice........

  • There is an album by Marilyn Horne and she does this too. It is worth a listen to. A mezzo's voice is so suited to this arrangement, nice warm notes almost baritonal don't you think. Great.

  • Holy Cow! Murder Inc. in the front row. Man, if Y'eshua showed up they'd freak.

  • You!! ARE SO RIGHT ON AND TOO!! FUNNY Thank God we have A Change up!!! Wish Obama could sing but Now we REALLY NEED THIS PRAYER!! !

  • Denyce Graves is amazing. I can't describe how perfect her voice is in this piece. It truly makes me cry. For once Mrs. (L) Bush has it right.

  • anytime i hear this song it moves my soul to the very core

  • Stunning!

  • Denyce Graves is a genuine person. She's still as sweet and wonderful as she was in high school when I knew her.

  • her performance shook me to the core. outstanding!

  • Magnificent!

  • For those who aren't sure, this is a video from Gerald Ford's funeral.

  • No it's not, it's from the National Service of Prayer and Remembrance on the Friday following 9/11, in 2001.

Former President Ford died in 2006.

  • @Salmagundiii Great vid by the way, and thanks for clarification.

  • I stand corrected. Denyce also sang this at Ford's funeral, and I confused the two performances. This is not the one from the funeral.

  • No Friday September 14, 2001 at National Cathedral Washington dc.

  • Maravilhoso (wonderful) e inspirador, (and inspiring).

Um momento de graça (a moment of grace).

  • I remember when I saw my first time. This was the National Religious Service of September 11 2001, Denyce Graves sung...absolutley Amazing!!! that sad day.

  • Such a beautiful woman singing so beautifully as well. There really is nobody who can outdo her performance of this piece.

  • I wish I can sing it like this! breath taking

  • I must confess I started to loose my faith in the catholic church after deaths in family .........This has just restored it to me .

  • breath taking

  • This is one of my favorite versions of the Lord's Prayer ever!!! Absolutly Beautiful.

  • Oh My God...This is Beautiful...There is no other way to sing this song. While listening to this I have no fear of dying . Mrs. Graves has a true gift from God.

Thanks for posting...I have been searching for this since 9-11.

  • I think that is the most beautiful voice I have ever heard in my life!!!!!!!

  • Awesome!!!!

  • hard to beat that , you go girl

  • That woman can sing!

  • What a voice!

  • THIS. IS THE BEST AND MOST TOUCHING VIDEO EVER TO BE UPLOADED ONTO UTUBE Thank you

  • I definitely agree with you....

  • this is a wonderful rendition of this song...so clear so pure...it's as if she IS praying to god and not just singing the lyrics as we often hear now a days...you can sense the connection with the singer and the song...they become one and that's when we have music.

  • So wonderful to hear this done so well. We hear it done so poorly way too often these days. A great voice and grand lady.

  • I remember the moment she performed this. I was utterly amazed at her poise and control in this incredibly intense time

... and such a thoughtful interpretation.

  • That was awesome. I just hate that they had to keep showing the audience. I have this thing where I have to see the singers face, I don't know why.

  • What a wonderful rendition of the Lord`s Prayer. Professional and heart-felt. I love her voice. And she is so beautiful. Simply fullfillment.

  • Outstanding!

  • Yes! Product of the best performing arts high school in America. Duke Ellington School of the ARTS!!!!!!!

  • The power in her voice could she beat Aretha Franklin? Anyone respond?

  • ...different styles of music. It's like comparing Apples and Oranges.

  • That's right!!! Go Ellington!!!

  • Beautiful.

  • I'm not sure if clapping was appropriate at this time of grief, no matter what your politics are....

  • she did render an outstanding performance which deserved a standing ovation, but clapping at a solemn occasion like that would have been extremely tacky and inappropriate.

  • It's proper etiquette to not clap (on most occasions) in church.

  • Also, this is an AMAZING performance, I don't want it to seem like my comment is taking anything away from that. Her voice is so pure, great vibrato, nice full tone. GREAT

  • U know what I'm sorry, I did not know this was Gerald Ford;s funeral until I read the caption. I stand corrected.

  • ja'vonn...its hilary.

    clearly this was a funeral!

anyone with eyes cudda seen that!

    But yes, she is fierceness...

That's the work of Edward Jackson for ya!

  • This is the best rendition of the Lord's Prayer I've ever heard.

Denyce is a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice.

We, in America, are so blessed in the way she stirred our souls and blessed our hearts in song.

  • OH MY GOD!!! I had to watch this again. She sang this so effortlessly.Just Beautiful.

I had chills throughout the whole song. AMAZING!!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!

  • OMG!!! Her voice is as beautiful as she is!!! Flawless...

  • Does anyone else realize how beautiful she is, of course her dramatic mezzo soprano is beautiful.

  • I agree with you. An incredible talent, but drop dead gorgeuos as well.

  • That's what I keep saying to myself. She's very beautiful.

  • she is amazing

  • the BEST rendition I have EVER heard....

  • Ditto to all your comments

  • Gorgeous performance as ever from the divine Ms. Graves.

  • That was the one time I cried during that service. Beautifully sung and just very moving. Denyce Graves is an amazing singer.
