My ancestry is Sephardi Jewish, but I was born as a Muslim because my family gradually changed their religion. But I am still proud of my JEWISH roots!
@rofrno sadly this is not an uncommon story, many jews were converted for one reason or another. In Spain an enormous amount of them were once jewish but forced to convert during the inquisition, and now a lot are very racist and anti-semetic in espana, very sad
@Gwynsek whats so better about it being "Jewish ,not muslim !!!" ?? Secular music has no religion, dumbass!
Plus, if it wasn't for the Muslim caliphates in Spain and North Africa, this music (the Sephardic musical tradition) wouldn't even exist. I can tell someone is obviously consumed by some sort of useless, bitter hatred.
@MrHalohalo85 What makes you think you have the right to call someone dumbass and not being called back, jerk? they have their religion in common, they have their history as a people in common even if they also have different histories. and not all american jews have a lot in common with spielberg or stewart; what is the point of making stereotypes? and even if no one has anything in common, can we only appreciate what we already know and claim, or is it possible to know and love other people(s)? the music is beautiful. is there something more important than that to say about it?
i just dont see what american jews have in common with middle eastern jews. it seems to me that they are arabs of the jewish faith, just as there are arabs of the christians faith, in other words the original people of the faiths. it seems to me that middle eastern jews have more in common with palestinians, culturally, ethnically, language, food, and music, than they ever would with american jews like steven spielberg or jon stewart.
@xgotfiveonitx arabs are arabs of different religions.jews are jews(race&religion) where ever they are from in the world.you can not be an arab jew.yes to sephardi and mid east jews having things in common with arab culture but there are sephardi americans.steven speilbeg etc are ashkenazi jews(from the cold countries in the east)
@astellamari jews are not a race, its just a religion. how can a white man from russia be the same race as a black man from ethiopia? lol so yes there are arab jews, who not only look middle eastern, but are culturally, ethnic, culinary and language wise arab. so what do american jews have in common with them? aside from religion, nothing. they dont speak yiddish and dont eat bagels.
@WipeTheNazis what is scientifically proven is that most european jews are white khazar's who hold no middle eastern dna. its next to impossible to trace a direct line of descent from someone who lived that long ago. virtually anyone today alive could be one of his descendants. try googling more about dna. but ill agree with your id name, as a brown man in america, those neo-nazis frighten me calling us 'mud races' and all that other junk. thats why i dont hate jews we may have our disputes.
@xgotfiveonitx Well, umm... as a Jewish Roman-Catholic. I would like to inform you that we Jews are Hebrew. WE do have Middle Eastern DNA. Sephardi Jews are the original Jews and lived in Muslim countries for long times at end. We got along with the Muslims, and they are STILL are friends.... (At least in America) But over in the Middle East... they are Anti-Semetic. No matter how many times we helped them out.
@Masterlink981 'hebrew' is not a race, its a language spoken in a particular country. do you yourself speak the language? jewish, and 'roman catholic' are religions, not a race. and i hope your mom is jewish, cuz under isreali law you are not a jew unless dear old mommy is one herself. if your european, european ashkanazi jews hold no middle eastern dna. semetic languages are arabic, how is that being 'anti semetic'? zionism is racism and we see its persecution of palestinians so gimme a break.
@Masterlink981 i never said that. some jews are white, but others are arabs, black ethiopians, indians, afghanis, iranians, turkish and even chinese believe it or not! hebrew is just a language. jews are not a race, its just a religion and nothing more. if jews are 'race' then so are christians, ha!.
@Masterlink981 no that would make you a white european khazar. do you hold chinese or asian dna? no you do not. do you hold arab dna? no you do not. you are nothing more than a russian. tell me what country in europe did your grandparents immigrant from again? cuz that would be your nationality, you religion is simply jewish.
An emotion for me hear this kind of music, that I like very much, and of course it was brought to Brazil by the "bnei anussim" from Sefarad, when several people fled persecution in Spain and Portugal in the XVI century and certainly is, together the Middle Eastern music, one of the references in the brazilian musical culture, mainly in the brazilian northeast regional (folk) music with its polyphonic side.
Hello everyone, I suppose that this is composed in turkey or under turish influence, because this form is one of the most typical in turkish classical music, called "Saz Semai", always starting in 10/8 and then switching to 6/8 or antoher faster rhythm. normally they would have toswitch back to the main part of the 10/8.. anyways thanks a lot for posting!
Very likely, most Sephardic Jews emigrated either to the Maghreb or the Ottoman Empire after the edict of Alhambra exiled them from Spain. There is a great deal of Turkish influence in Sephardic culture as a result.
@DMPineau Don't forget that in present day Israel, middle eastern Jews are referred to as Sephardic. The actual Sephardic Jews who fled Spain and settled in Turkey and N Africa were largely influenced by the local indigenous Jewish Population because the local Jews were much larger in number.
Does anybody knows who is the composer of this semai (music form 10/8 - 3+2+2+3- and the final part is on 6/8) and what makam is it? Very nice music!!
@oct43 It is called a cumbus. It is not a banjo but the construction is very similar. Playing style and sound is however more like an oud which it is supposed to resemble.
It is middle eastern music. Sephardic Jews grow up in this traditions for centuries in Muslim countries both learn from each other cultures. I think Sephardic Jews has many things in common in regards to the style of pray and music when it comes to religion. But the instruments are all Middle Eastern Instruments and mostly used by Arabic people. Thanks for your comment.
@sepharadflorida Stop saying "arabic people". The original arabs are the people from the deserts of Arabia who conquered much of the middle east. You could say
"But the instruments are all Middle Eastern Instruments and mostly used by middle eastern people. Thanks for your comment."
You are right. This music is created in a multicultural environment of Ottoman Empire, in Izmir, Istanbul and Salonika. Ofc Sephardi Jews were one of the contributors to this culture as well. Actually it was Sephardi Jews who bring middle-eastern, north african music style to Istanbul after 15th century, not the Arabs.
So, this type of music didn't evolve by the Arabs.
Turks, Armenians, Sephardi Jews and various Balkanic people created this and this is our common music
@sepharadflorida I think you have that backwards, Muslim nations grew up around the Sephardi jews who had been in the region for about 2500 years before Islam existed...
@Superslash this music has born in Andalus in the period between 711 and 1492, is iberian jewish an muslim music. Now in Morocco an Argelia, this music is very important. Excuse my bad english. Saludos
@Superslash as a muslim i would have to admit that there is a certain amount of truth to that. but givne the larger muslim populations i think the two religiouis communities grew up around each other, but both were the same arab ethnicity and race.
@sepharadflorida I'm Sephardi Jewish and Roman-Catholic. Yes, we Sephardi Jews do eat couscous, and other traditional Muslim foods. We also have the same style of music and prayer. We do not eat pork.... though I do admit to eating cheeseburgers and shrimp egg rolls.... :P
As for the no pork thing. I don't eat pork simply because I like being kosher and it hurts my belly if I eat it....
@Masterlink981 good for you, its a disgusting animal anyways. sephardic jews are arab jews. there no such thing as 'traditional muslim foods', since plenty of middle easterners, arabs, and assyrians alike are in fact christian. thats why i say that european jews have nothing in common with arab jews other than just religion and thats it. you say you are roman catholic, where does that come from? i mean which religion do you actually follow? do you dangle a cross around your neck?
@Masterlink981 Yeah you don't eat pork. GOOD! You are Jewish!!! Yeah!! Well Wait!!! No you are not!!! BUT you are better than these american ashkanazi jews here. I doubt their Jewishness in terms of genetics or in terms of religious observance. Hannukah and camping outdoors are their biggest occasions. LOL By the way, I'm a Mizrahi Jew living in US. I'm telling you by my experience
@sepharadflorida Jews originated in middle east and majority of Jews until about 500 yrs ago still lived in Middle east and N Africa. There were about 15 Semitic civilizations in middle east and only Judaism has survived to this day in terms of culture and religion.
Some western Jews (ashkanazi) think "ah this sounds middle eastern". I answer YES OF COURSE. JEWS ARE SEMITIC MIDDLE EASTERN PEOPLE. SO THEIR MUSIC IS ALSO ORIGINALLY MIDDLE EASTERN. SOMETIMES PEOPLE ARE SO IGNORANT!!!!
Sounds like the Middle Eastern music that I'm familiar with--the percussion, and especially the instrument which looks and sounds like an Oud. Is it an Oud? Or is there a different name for it in Hebrew than in the Arabic? Very nice! Thanks for posting.

Sounds like the Middle Eastern music that I'm familiar with--the percussion, and especially the instrument which looks and sounds like an Oud. Is it an Oud? Or is there a different name for it in Hebrew than in the Arabic? Very nice! Thanks for posting.
