Was Joni Mitchell credited for editing this? I couldn't find any reference to it being Joni who called the shots in the editing room. Because honestly my guess is that she has a much better eye and rhythm, and respect for her fellow musicians. You can't sing the way she does and have no visual rhythm, it just doesn't work like that. My guess would be stupid producers/studio execs. Although for a minute it was cool to see old school Vegas - you'll never see it like that anymore, almost innocent.

I can't stand the interjected footage on this.... Joni please re-edit this for DVD with the original version, and a full "band" version.... just the music, please.... no interjected footage. They make double sided DVDs now. Best of both worlds. Regardless of my dislike for Joni's interjected "non-performance" footage, this album is one of my favorites, and I treasure the band footage that there is.

@beelzabubba I agree. Can't stand it either. Reminds me indirectly of how bad some of the vids from the 60's/early 70's would get. You just want to watch the performance, and it becomes too visually effect laden to watch. It was a time & place thing I suppose. New technology is easy to overuse.

I've read somewhere that Jaco wrote up the score for the horns through some early hours at one night... Mike plays like hell, and is still very true to Jaco's score. Loved that vinyl album for "more than 30 years" - which I believe is close to quoting a passage in Prok Pie Hat on Mitchell's Mingus-album...

Jaco is amazing but most of the comments avoid the truly gifted horn Mr. Brecker played. He did things that were, well, indescribable... Remember, its a sax, bass, drums and vocalist; all that sound... Remarkable doesn't come close no matter what their expressions might have been... All of them did the art proud! By the way, Galileo took heat for heleocentrism. It is all out of this world.... ;>)

Si, creo que Jaco vino de otro mundo, sacudió a todos los que se creen que tocan el bajo demostrando hasta dónde se puede llegar con un fender jazz bass de solo 4 cuerdas y 20 trastes, y se fue... We can't judge Jaco for his volume on this performance, his level was the decision of the live sound mixing engineer and the mixing engineer responsible for producing this DVD!

I don't think brecker shook his head in disgust, it felt more like 'holy F, we just did that at a folk music concert!'

That was Awesome! the way Jaco would let those harmonics ring for bars and then drop into the chord change was beyond!

@fizzyfox - I totally caught that, too. You can see the reaction to Brecker's reaction back in Jaco's face, too. That is Jaco at his most outrageous, totally over the top, and as a bass player, I love the audacity, but I can see how a guy like Brecker might think, "way too much."

This is painful to watch. Two of the geniuses of late-Twentieth Century jazz, now dead, and Joni/producer decide to air some stupid Vegas Hilton crap instead of respecting the music. Then they cut a section to save space. Ugh. Amazing song, amazing musicians, and Joni or video producer at their stupidist. Wish that moment could be reclaimed, for the sake of the music.
