  • one of the most underrated artists ever!

  • @frotttiop . Totally agree. brilliant song and Human's Lib album never gets a mention anywhere in top 200 albums. New Song, What is Love, Hide and seek. Conditioning, Equality and Don't always look at the rain off the top of my head.. Fantastic artist.

Dream into action was also a great album imo

  • My Dad was there!

  • I was there, what a great 15th birthday that was.

  • I'm so proud to have this DVD...And pearls like this song ...

  • Lol - 3:34 look at the tosser giving the one finger Salute. All those years and i've only just seen this. If it's you....... Tosser ! lol

  • one little piece of the biggests musical extravaganza ever performed, but none the less a superb performance but howard jones...........

  • 4:04 you and your voice alone in front of a whole stadium packed of people... SCARY!

  • @ZeroFrillsMan And two billion people watching on TV around the world.

  • great song, great performer. can't be easy to play in front of that many people live......

  • theres "feed the world" upon the stage.... it was 1985 and now look ..... ITS 26 years later and how many mill or bill people are with out or less food and water. thats a shame for this planet, and a fkg proof that todays politics are SHIT. wake up.....

  • i think the woman @1.39 min with the hands up is in a very good mood... wdyt?

  • @inn3rligh7 she just got fisted by the two men behind her, four fists, btw,is this version with the awesome artistical piano intro available.he was my generation's mozart.

  • @gailmckennag haha yes you might be right...

  • talent

  • I saw this concert via Swedish Television. I was 13 years young back then, and I watched his piano playing techniques to try to improve my own skills. This song is etched to my mind.

  • Grimsby town v exeter

  • @only1eebo ...what?

  • Always a live aid highlight for. The sound was perfect, not tinny and thin, just bloke and a piano and a great song

  • hello guys.

i would to play it on keyboard but i don't now the tabs.

    anyone here who knows it?

    please answer

  • Works just on a piano like all great songs

  • Does he play more songs or only this one?

  • @gmansi : there was only time for him to do this one song. too bad :) . he had rehearsed one more song, "Life in one day" I think, but the show's schedule was running a bit late when it was his turn.

  • @baramartin Sad, Howard Jones deserve more time on stage than a lot of other artists...

  • @gmansi : I agree - I had been waiting at the tv just to see Howard :) (and some others too of course).

  • i miss those days, and my hair.......

  • @FeNsTa :) poor guy!!

  • Such a class act. He even lets the audience have the last words...of HIS song.

  • Always was the best Performance of the day for me...

  • I remember watching this at the time.... What a wonderfully haunting tune... Beautiful

  • ich habe damals das ganze Konzert im Fernsehen gesehen...war unser Woodstock...nur anders...wir waren ja auch anders 1985 :-)

Eines der schönsten Lieder von Howard Jones, schade das er nicht mehr da ist

  • Just brilliant. Such an underrated genius on the keys and songwriting!

  • Genuinely awesome! First saw it on the DVD...unfortunately i'm only 18 and have only experienced Live 8...not really the same although Annie Lennox, The Who and Def Leppard were good...you cannot beat old Wembley for atmosphere and to add to that an incredible performance of one of the genuine highlights of the 80s music scene in England...i was born 20 years too late!!!

  • perfect sound

  • This was one of the highlights of the day for me too. It was that day I realised what an amazing talent Howard is.

I heard a story that Phil Collins approached him before he went on stage (no sound checks that day) and said "Be careful, a couple of the notes on the piano are sticking". This was Phil's idea of a joke on Howard, who was already nervous. Shame on you, Phil !!!!!!!

  • I was there. It was amazing.

  • @DigitalLazarus: You were?! Lucky you!! :D I was only there "via sattellite"! :)

  • @baramartin if you see any overhead shot of the Live Aid crowd, our group was right next to the mixing table left side. I was 23 years old and won two tickets from a contest in "The London Evening Standard." Will never forget that day, ever.

  • @DigitalLazarus How lucky were you !!!! id of loved to be there but i also had to watch on tv loved it tho xx

  • @DigitalLazarus

I was there too, brilliant day :)

stood near the Prince and Princess of Wales :)

  • @DigitalLazarus how did you manage to go toilet and come back to the same place??!

  • great piano play...intro is funny...:-)

  • really should have played 'new song'........

  • Oh and not to mention incredibly humble:)

  • An amazing artist the king of the synth in my opinion.

  • top tune

  • This was one of the highlights I remember watching on the day itself. A great time for music. Thanks for posting.

  • @Craigtoun -Same here (in Sweden)! :)

  • Seen Howard about 8 months prior to this performance in the Glagow Appollo in late 84* I was a young kid back then and to this day i still rate Howard as one of the finest singer / songwritters of his generatiion .Great trip down memory lane watching this again after 25 years ... my how time flies eh ;-)

  • Class!

  • This version turned out to be his best song ever, in my opinion, and has shown to the world that the guy is also a really good piano player. I had goosebumps when i heard this when i was a kid and still having'em today. Great HJ!

  • Love this!!!

  • I neeeeeed to know how to play this! It's beautiful

  • Just as much as I love Howard Jones and especially this rendition of Hide and seek, I hate this new Youtube layout/rating/answering system.

  • Wow what a great voice and piano skillz. I guess this is why all chickz loved howard. Girlz like guyz with skillz. :D

  • oh? I always like this piano version of Hide and Seek !!! Amazing !

  • Wow, just wow! To sing & play live like that to such a huge audience, that's amazing. No lip-syncing here !!!! Would love to see HJ live.

  • @paulrandomview : True to that! Amazing skills.. just a natural at it.

  • eines der schönsten Lieder die ich kenne...!!! Howard Jones kann Musik machen, und das live ;-)Love it

  • Hey got a English BUlldog looks WOOF WOOF!

  • wow...he's a great pianist :) and i think this version of the song is much better than studioversion!

    lovin it ♥

  • @Mimu00

A few bum notes at the beginnng; otherwise brilliant; probably the best rendition of it ever.

  • I just love this video. Loved Howard since I was 9 :)

  • brilliant, this was one of the highlights of Live Aid for me. A great live version of an awesome track, by one of the most dominating 80's artists. When Howard Jones hit the UK charts it caused a storm. It was nothing like what we'd heard before.

Nice to see the old Hill Audio M4's used as stage fills LOL

  • beavers42891 your a knob you get up and sing this song in front of 90.000 people mmmm dont think so

  • sick ass song! love the piano i gotta learn that some day....

  • wow! great vocals there... not to mention the haircut... :)

  • So she built her elaborate home, with its ups and its downs, with Its rain and its sun. She decided that her work was all done, wanted to have some fun.

  • Too deep

  • stunning video. Hi Martin! 8)

  • Hi! :)

  • Howard appears to be checking the keys before playing. Could this be something to do with Phil Collins comment to him?

  • I used to have hair like that now I'm a bald bastard :)

  • I have the cure for that...try ozonized cream or gel with aloe vera (sabilla) base.Or try ortiga in 70 grades alcohol...It´s a natural solution.

  • lol ok I think it might take more of a miracle ;)

  • lol im 38 and so far has hung on to mine.

  • @hartnell yay for the 80's mullet eh? haha

  • @hartnell Me too... Mine's just starting to go :D

  • the song is sung LIVE better than on his album version

  • look at his hair, amaizng, I want it now on my own head!

  • He looks so happy.. :]

  • Jones is a genus:)

  • Thank you it's grim up north and baramartin! I love finding these hidden "deep cuts" on youtube.

  • Great song. Does anyone know if this song charted in the top 40 or whatever? Thanks for posting.

  • From howardjonesdotcom:

    "Release Date: 18 February 1984.

    Chart: 12."

I guess that's for the UK only, but I'm sure it's been on lots of charts over Europe! :)

  • My Mistake, Hide and Seek did indeed make number 12. Like to get to know you well made number 4. Apologies !

  • No worries! :)

  • It made number 4? in the UK in 1984. It comes from the Human's Lib album, which also gave him top tens with New Song and What is Love, Pearl in the shell was another single from that album. it made number 7 if memory serves.

  • This is pretty much as good as a piano, HoJo and 70,000 people gets..........one of the highlights of Live Aid and very much a memorable thing for me to re-live..........proves if you seek something hidden, you'll find a gem

  • yeah, that song should be called "I'm Never Gonna Dance Again" or something, lol!

  • So, you just happened to miss the following part? ;)

"...She decided that her work was done, time to have fun

And she found a game to play

Then as part of the game

She completely forgot where she'd hidden herself

And she spent the rest of her time

    Trying to find the parts..."

  • Simple and beautiful

  • Mr. Jones is now a millionaire and is going very well. At least, that is the last I heard.

  • Deservedly so.

  • one of thee most beautiful songs ever, ever, ever written. I had this vhs tape way back when. thanks for posting

  • Didn;t know about Howard Jones that much until this concert back in 85. This is a beautiful song with the piano. Still love it after all these years. Thanks for sharing it.

  • I been into Howard Jones's music for more than 15 years now.

I saw him in September 2003 at the 20th anniversary concert, Shepherds Bush Empire, London.

That was a great concert. This is one of my fave songs so to see him doing it with just a piano is great.

  • I was there too! Nice to meet you! :)

Whis I'd been to Live Aid too though...! :)

  • I prefer this version than the recorded one

  • beautiful :'-)

  • just found him and he blew me away

  • one of live aids class acts

  • 4:14 to 4:18 is why Live Aid rules.

  • great comment eza27 i agree its one of mine as well.Howard Jones,Legend.

  • A terrific performance. No gadgets, gizmos or voice enhancers, just Howard and a piano.

  • Hello;

I really prec. your comment; you're great, I mean it, whatever...

Thx to my son, who better in this...

  • nd what a good performance!!!!

  • the man rules wat a talent !!!

  • Wonderful talent.

  • Howard Jones wrote some of the best songs ever written. This is one of them.

  • I think he is a geniuos of music maybe with premium

  • This has just made me cry. Amazing. Thanks Howard & thanks poster.

  • howard jones what a star performer you dont get acts this good any more...........

  • Wow he did Freddie's piano proud, what an amazing pianist! This is one of my favorite live aid acts.

  • this guy just makes me want to learn piano. fantastic.. love the 80's.......

  • How many people nowadays could get up and play the piano like that no fuss and sing live? Great song and the best concert ever, we ruled the world musically.

  • Some may say we still do.......☺

  • here here. absolutely fantastic i am in awe of the man. what a great day. roll me back to the 80's

  • Take Me Back With You! haha - Beautiful Song :)

  • Did he do any other tracks at this gig?

  • simon1000:

No, he didn't (unfortunately:). He had rehearsed one more song ("Life In One Day", I think), but the show ran out of time a bit after some other artist.

I'm not sure if he joined in on some other song though, like maybe "Do They Know It's Christmas" with the other artists at the end of the show?

  • Yea i just read the gig listing, weird how Nik Kershaw did 4 songs, thought those two were about level on popularity in those days, would have been cool if he'd done Pearl In The Shell ☺

  • Yeah! He should've been allowed to do just one more song at least! :) I'd been waiting "all day" for him to perform and had expected a bit more... but who knows what the producers had in mind ;) .

  • the studio version is one of my fave all time tracks... this is superb and that guy can play... yet another one of the top performers from the early 80s... top man HoJo

  • totally agree. Still sounds haunting all this time later, still has the power to send chills down the spine.

  • Was a time... when music was capturing the soul... beautiful eighties - the more you go away the more you stay!

  • i'm yet to hear a peice on the piano that compares to this. He does seem to struggle with his vocals at points though. Never the less 5 stars Howard.

  • Completely underated song.... Brilliant!

  • still the best

  • great song from a great decade,i miss the eighties, such great memories

  • FUUUCK his hair is hot!!

and for all you dumbasses, im being sarcastic xD

  • EEEW 1980 would like their hair back... OMG MULLET!

  • Thanks for posting this. This was my favourite moment from the day and I have not seen it since my videotape of live aid broke about 15 years ago.

  • What happened to his head? Tragic accident?

  • We've gone backwards musically in this country, how can you compare the awesome musicality and song writing of Howard Jones to James Blunt?

  • I couldn't agree more. it's impossible. James Blunt is a complete joke against Howard.

  • indeed! you r so right. Howard sought the innocence and Blunt just preys on the morbid! Jones where are you we need some serious songwriters now!!

  • Completely different version to the original! Like this one better.Top marks hojo!

  • OMG!! HE IS SO SEXY!!!

  • god he was a fantastic musician, quite suprising really when we have this misconception that 80s pop stars were manufactured

  • Nada, e still is buddy, seenhim at an 80s tour in may, and goin again in Nov, what an artist

  • wow thanks for posting this in its entirety! i remember seeing a bit of this live on american tv, since they were covering the more "popular" artists.. thanks! randy suesakul

  • he referred to this at his 25th anniversary concert on Saturday night, saying the support he got on this occassion was the reason he chose to play this song accoustically.

  • I wish I could find the live version that he did of this song on Top of the Pops- It was the first time I realised that not every song was lip synced

  • Yeah, at that time I was 18 and I watched the whole show on television. It was very hot - both in the Netherlands as in London. To me Howard Jones was one of the highlights of the day. Other strong performers were Elvis Costello, U2, David Bowie (featering Thmas Dolby) and Queen. Pretty absurd was the fact that Phil Collins first performed in London with Against all odds, then took a private jet to the States to perform at Live Aid USA singing exactly the same song!

  • i used to sing this to my gf 23 years ago

so its a good memory as we both sit here

pity he sacked his songwriter how different his career would of been

  • MATE

HE GOT BIGGER IN THE ""us""" after this

  • "sacked his songwriter"?? Howard always wrote the music...

  • Had to smile when i heard an interview with HJ about that day. A understandably nervous musician sat down in front of the world to play his heart out, only to find the piano was hammered, no feeling at all. Really had to punch each key to make it heard.. The onwner of such a heap? Mr F Mercury. Of course!

  • but if you watch the video, he doesn't hammer the soft notes and they are still resonant

  • This "live" version is so much better than the studio version!! Just goes to show what an amazingly talented musician/singer/songwriter Howard Jones is!!!

  • I never get fed up watching this....Brilliant

  • If the 4:14 mark dosen't make you melt, then you weren't born in the 80s and you have NO heart/soul.

  • The intro is simply great!

  • a beautifully optimistic tune and in these few short minutes he absolutely hit the live aid nail on its wembley sized head.amidst all the rock and performance that Queen and U2 belted out, howard simply sat down quietly, and delivered the most understated moment of the day! loved it!

  • For 040469ian -- Absolutely agree!! Pure talent and yes, "the most understated moment of the day".

  • Off to see howard tomorrow....cant wait...

  • Ma è Mc Gyver!!!

  • I love this version...grand piano/ vocal is far better than they synth version and just goes to show what a strong song it is.

  • Many people curse Howard Jones and Phil Collins at present, but they were famous in those days and amongst the few who sang in tune on that day in July 1985.

  • Howard Jones is a GREAT artist. He might not have the strongest vocals, but his talents are amazing!

  • What a wonderful performance by Howard Jones, I remember watching this the first time around, it brought a chill down my spine and still does... Just terrific.

  • Howard Jones is a great live preformer!

He is one of my favorite artists ever!

  • Sembra McGyver...

  • ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF LIVE AID 1! The crowd sang along beautifully and Howard was the perfect gentleman. Along with David Bowie, U2 (Bad!), Elvis Costello and Queen Howard Jones was one of the highlights at Live Aid.

  • 3.34 fella in the crowd giving it the finger....front row......what a spot

  • Ha quality spot i saw it¬ funny shit. Love howard!

  • this is a classic

  • There are no artists like HJ anymore,

  • This is a really good perforance. i Love stuff like this just sat at a piano...Great,,, thank you for uploading

  • I remember watching this too but on the telly. An excellent performance by an excellent performer on an incredible day. This song can get dreamy in it's original guise. Best performance for me at Live Aid was Bad by U2 though. Although I don't want to take anything away from this - v.v.good

  • IMHO I thought Radio Gaga by Queen was the Best Performance at Live Aid. Freddie was the ulimate showman.

  • Come look at mytube all you who adore howard jones have a listen to my version of Pearl in the shell, let me know what you think please ;) ;)

  • such a poignant performance by a lovely human being, one of the best songs ever.from dela xx

  • I can remember this...watching live !

  • must say I like the piano version way more than the 'electronic synth stuff'

but I guess that is just a matter of taste

    Great performance! And instrument !

p.s.: and indeed he looks kinda blind but obviously found his way to the middle of the stage a bit too easy for that though ;)

  • Great performance. Still gives me shivers remembering that wonderful day back in summer 1985.

  • I remember hearing this version on the radio, made me get into music (hence me doing music for AAA computer games) loved it. shame he looks like some blind kid while playing the piano. All seems so simple now, but back then I thought it was impossible to play..lol oh well. thanks.

  • i remember this, i was a big fan in 1985, it sent shivers down my spine... it did it again today. thanks howard...

  • i love you
