There are the people who understand walking cross country. And then there is the rest of the world. I am so in the first group. I sometimes get blisters and back ache walking. But its the world that drains my soul.
@romanbrough I concur.....well said. The world is up my arse a bit now and I could use a trip. Too hot here though....I do so prefer the Winter Treks.
Great vid - I'm glad to finally see the Hennessey super shelter thing getting pushed into some extreme temps. I've been thinking that some sort of inflatable layer (air mattress would be too heavy) might provide some great insulation and yet pack up small and light.
Great video guys!! I have a couple videos from my Bear and Bean lake solo trip here on YouTube. It was good to see the information on the hammock for winter, I will have to try that.
nice bush, not much for wildlife, just use a decent mummy bag in the hammock with a reflection pad underneath, and you'll be fine, no need for a thousand layers and a tarp. a bit of hot chocolate and oatmeal in the morning is plenty even at a cool -30C. I have a 9,000 btu single burner stove, that works excellent after a preheating paste, as long as it is wind-sheltered.
@ralphweener Well .... I don't think the reflection pad underneath would do it for me in -26 .... but if it works for you ..... you must have anti-freeze in your veins.
Nice video shug! Looks like fun. I'm excited to get some snowshoes, but it looks like I'll need about a billion more things to not freeze my toes off I'm gonna copy ya.
That shug must have antifreeze in his veins! You inspire us all, Shug! This So-Cal boy will stick with his fair-weather, though... Thanks for the vid!
@shugemery what do you use for sleeping bag? i have some camping to do in the canadian rockies, this winter. thinking about buying a marmot membrain lithium 0 degree bag
The woods are sooo beautiful with the snow! Shug, does your wife Meg ever go on any of your backpacking adventures? (If I'm not being to nosy in asking that.) It would be fun to get her take on the trips. : )
hey shug, have you ever heard of or tried the VBL (vapor barrier layering) system? i don't have the personal experience but it seems to help if you're into the extreme cold weather camping.
Thanks bud,That's the way I was leaning (Brandon's). Just wanted to get some feedback before I spend another 500.00 for the t/q and u/q. I have already spent over 1800.00 for me and my son. Like you said in one of your vids"they are going to get some money out of you". YES THEY ARE. but if you want the good, light equipment and not the big bulky junk from wall m....... you will spent some money....
hey Shug,I'm looking at u/q and t/q and was wondering which do you prefer Brandon,s or Jacks r better? there bout the same price. but how is the quality? tiredhiker
How come you're not using cross country skis? The conditions appear to be perfect for that. You get more distance, it's easier to walk as you don't sink in and it's fun!
With a bit of practice tight spots are no problem (though undergrowth can be), and everybody knows, practice makes perfect. ;) If you go for some fairly wide skis you can go for slightly shorter length which makes it easier to navigate around obstacles. Besides, you're totally missing out on a fast downhill with a humorous ending in a tree. :)
Your videos are hillarious man! haha -- Keeps my backpacking spirits up during the winter time when I'm too much of a wuss to get out there in the snow like you ;) baha
I forgot to say how much we enjoy your videos. My youngest says lets watch some Shug videos every night. Very informative plus entertaining. My kids crack up. In fact we all do our own Shug impressions. We are hooked and all want to get hammocks. Regard from California.
I bet that 28 deg. in se tx feels colder than 26 below in mn. (not that Im knocking 26 below by any means) but if you've experienced winter in se tx then you know what im talking about.
just so you know....when it hits 28 deg here it usually means that the week before was 76 and everyone was at the beach. the extreme changes coupled with high humidity make it rough.
Have you ever experienced temps that go from 80 to 30 to 80 to 40 to teens to 70s to 20's back to 80 all in a months time with high humidity? no time to acclimate here.
nice vid... im a brit living in MN and love it in winter. Looking to get out and explore a little more. I like to go camping in the mid north and northern South Australia in winter, it's usually quite pleasant, 20-25C, which is way better than the few times I've been in the northern Flinders Ranges in summer when it hit 40-48C one year, usually its high 30's.

One thing that I've found helpful in the sleeping bag on those really cold nights: two Nalgene bottles of hot water - one in an insulated cover, the other not. is that the standard fly on the henney?
whats the weight on all that insulation gear?
do you ever get heavy rain? if so how does the henney rain cover protect if you want to hang out unerit and do camp chores and stuff?
sorry for so many Q's
thanks
oneraindog 2 years ago
There is a fellow on hammockforums that will do that mod to a Henn. his name is 2Q.
Not my Hennesey ... it was Kurt's but that was the standard tarp. Insulation .... my Underquilt was 23 ounces. Serious cold UQ!
In rain I have heard Henn folks want more tarp. Kurt is hardcore and bears it.
