  • good stuff bro!!!

  • @ACRutter Thanks....it was a right goodie of a trip.

  • Leskinen... Perfect pronunciation. Your videos are inspiring.

  • @ville12342001 Glad I passed the test! Carry on....

  • Thumbs up for the Erie canal reference.

  • @thebudgetgamer 16 mies on the Eire Canal...we used to sing that in grade school.

  • It's your sense of humor that brings me back to your videos over and over man, keep it up!!

  • @cameraguy1968 Made my day......humor ....or at least an attempt is my calling card.

  • There are the people who understand walking cross country. And then there is the rest of the world. I am so in the first group. I sometimes get blisters and back ache walking. But its the world that drains my soul.

  • @romanbrough I concur.....well said. The world is up my arse a bit now and I could use a trip. Too hot here though....I do so prefer the Winter Treks.

    Thanks

  • still amazes me with the super shelter. shoulda had you some bisquits and mustard

  • lol you look warm

  • Oofta tell my relatives hello:)

  • @paracordjunky Oh....you betcha. Real good then.

  • Great vid - I'm glad to finally see the Hennessey super shelter thing getting pushed into some extreme temps. I've been thinking that some sort of inflatable layer (air mattress would be too heavy) might provide some great insulation and yet pack up small and light.

  • @Aargh28 Try a good pad like an Exped pad or Thermarest with most of the air out of it. I found those pretty comfortable when I was using pads....

  • Great video guys!! I have a couple videos from my Bear and Bean lake solo trip here on YouTube. It was good to see the information on the hammock for winter, I will have to try that.

    One step at a time!

    Mike

  • @Gumby1974 I do so love being able to hang in winter. Love the Bean and Bear area ....

  • yo man i love it, your hilarious, trek on brother!

  • @germanamontoya I shall and I will .... soon!

  • your insane

  • @hazzathebest

Yeah ..... but my electo-shock has cured me.

  • nice bush, not much for wildlife, just use a decent mummy bag in the hammock with a reflection pad underneath, and you'll be fine, no need for a thousand layers and a tarp. a bit of hot chocolate and oatmeal in the morning is plenty even at a cool -30C. I have a 9,000 btu single burner stove, that works excellent after a preheating paste, as long as it is wind-sheltered.

  • @ralphweener Well .... I don't think the reflection pad underneath would do it for me in -26 .... but if it works for you ..... you must have anti-freeze in your veins.

  • Nice video shug! Looks like fun. I'm excited to get some snowshoes, but it looks like I'll need about a billion more things to not freeze my toes off I'm gonna copy ya.

  • That shug must have antifreeze in his veins! You inspire us all, Shug! This So-Cal boy will stick with his fair-weather, though... Thanks for the vid!

  • @sawyer7271 No .... just desperate to get away from life and chores!!!!!

    Thankee

  • @shugemery what do you use for sleeping bag? i have some camping to do in the canadian rockies, this winter. thinking about buying a marmot membrain lithium 0 degree bag

  • @antirepublican123 I used two together ..... a 20º and a 0º.

  • good job on your videos. thanks for sharing. Motivates me to be out more this winter.

  • @chitown1966

    For that I thankee!

    Hope you get out soon.

  • The woods are sooo beautiful with the snow! Shug, does your wife Meg ever go on any of your backpacking adventures? (If I'm not being to nosy in asking that.) It would be fun to get her take on the trips. : )

  • @earlymusicus My wife ..... she hates backpacking .... and cold and snow even more. She is a Spa gal......

    Leaves me to my thing!

  • looks cold and nice

  • @primitivebushskills It was!!!!!

I hope to get out colder this year..... maybe ......

  • hey shug, have you ever heard of or tried the VBL (vapor barrier layering) system? i don't have the personal experience but it seems to help if you're into the extreme cold weather camping.

  • @cikatricis

I have messed with it ....... and probably will mess with it again. did not like the moist feelin although I was warm!

  • Thanks bud,That's the way I was leaning (Brandon's). Just wanted to get some feedback before I spend another 500.00 for the t/q and u/q. I have already spent over 1800.00 for me and my son. Like you said in one of your vids"they are going to get some money out of you". YES THEY ARE. but if you want the good, light equipment and not the big bulky junk from wall m....... you will spent some money....

  • hey Shug,I'm looking at u/q and t/q and was wondering which do you prefer Brandon,s or Jacks r better? there bout the same price. but how is the quality? tiredhiker

PS I'm looking at the winter quilts

  • @fustratedfisher They are both great. I have a brandon 0ºTQ and winter Yeti. A Jacks Hudson River TQ for down to around 25º.

If I get another ... I would go with Stormcrow's TQ or UQ. Mighty fine stuff.

    It is all a win/win.

    They are all good.

  • chu' guyz r nutz...

  • looks like the whooo buddies were very helpful keeping your spirits up under the conditions.

  • A good Whoooo Buddy warms ya' right up a wee bit!!!!

Vocal strain comes in handy sometimes!

  • How come you're not using cross country skis? The conditions appear to be perfect for that. You get more distance, it's easier to walk as you don't sink in and it's fun!

  • Well ..... Tthe trail is tight in a lot of spots and I am not as adept on CC Skis!!

On a lake or river I would.

  • With a bit of practice tight spots are no problem (though undergrowth can be), and everybody knows, practice makes perfect. ;) If you go for some fairly wide skis you can go for slightly shorter length which makes it easier to navigate around obstacles. Besides, you're totally missing out on a fast downhill with a humorous ending in a tree. :)

  • Yeah ... i know a lot of Canadians ... ya'll are crazy in good way, eh?

    Thankee

  • @shugemery haha! i had to make a conversion chart so i could reference your temps... -20 is frickin cold!

  • Shug ... It's a good thing this is not PayTube, cause I would be broke because of you!

You are the favorite of the favorites!

  • A huge thankee SubnormalCoyote!!!!!

Comments like your make this totally worth while .... well .... I do have a blast doing them!

    Shug

  • done subscribed, youare too good

  • Thankee Sir.

  • Minnesotans are a trip! This is a great vid.

  • Just normal to us .... OK just me!

    Thanks Ed

  • Shug your videos are great man!

  • Nice of you to say .... I gotta check out your stuff .... canteens, cool.

  • where did you have the henney moded for side zipper access?

is that the standard fly on the henney?

whats the weight on all that insulation gear?

do you ever get heavy rain? if so how does the henney rain cover protect if you want to hang out unerit and do camp chores and stuff?

    sorry for so many Q's

    thanks

  • There is a fellow on hammockforums that will do that mod to a Henn. his name is 2Q.

Not my Hennesey ... it was Kurt's but that was the standard tarp. Insulation .... my Underquilt was 23 ounces. Serious cold UQ!

In rain I have heard Henn folks want more tarp. Kurt is hardcore and bears it.

  • You sure do seem to love your stogies.... But how come you never bring any booze? I never go backpacking without a fifth of Jack in my pack! ;)

  • Not a boozer any more. Ate all my Halloween candy in one night if you know what I mean...... Stogies and candy. Kinda sad..... ;-]

  • Your videos are hillarious man! haha -- Keeps my backpacking spirits up during the winter time when I'm too much of a wuss to get out there in the snow like you ;) baha

  • I forgot to say how much we enjoy your videos. My youngest says lets watch some Shug videos every night. Very informative plus entertaining. My kids crack up. In fact we all do our own Shug impressions. We are hooked and all want to get hammocks. Regard from California.

  • Too cool! Hammocks make camping even more fun for me....

    Impressions .... a true homage. Thanks ya'll .... mighty nice....mighty nice.

    Shug

  • How does Kurt get into his Hennessy with all the under materials? I thought you enter from below into the Hennessy. Thanks!

  • He just pushes it all to the side. You can get your hennessy modded with a zipper so you can get in top entry by 2Q....

  • oh man, great video!

  • Had fun out there ...... video was easy ... just a lazy man's journal.

    Thankee.

  • keep singing and lovin nature. Thank you.

  • You bet I will.

    Thanks

  • Awesome vid. Just got my HH Explorer and cant wait to try it. I dont know if Ive got the guts to do it this winter.

  • Man, you oughta go in winter! Just make sure that your under insulation is good .... two pads in an SPE. Check them out at SpeerHammocks.

    Or a really good under-quilt.

    It is too fun.

    Thanks for the encouraging words.

    Shug

  • I bet that 28 deg. in se tx feels colder than 26 below in mn. (not that Im knocking 26 below by any means) but if you've experienced winter in se tx then you know what im talking about.

  • just so you know....when it hits 28 deg here it usually means that the week before was 76 and everyone was at the beach. the extreme changes coupled with high humidity make it rough.

  • How do you figure? Have you ever expierenced 26 below?

  • Have you ever experienced temps that go from 80 to 30 to 80 to 40 to teens to 70s to 20's back to 80 all in a months time with high humidity? no time to acclimate here.

  • Yes, I live in Wisconsin. We have a saying "if you don't like the weather, wait a minute"

  • Is it true that a man can pee-pee at minus 26 deg and it not hit the snow?

  • Same with #2 as well!!!!!!

  • Yeah? Is that because something freezes shut first? :D

  • To be honest .... never had a problem writing my name in the snow in -26º .... glad my name is short though!

  • Really, scribing that thing through the snow can lead to some serious frostbite! ; D

  • nice vid... im a brit living in MN and love it in winter. Looking to get out and explore a little more. Any chance you can post a list of all the items you have for your hammock manufacturer names etc? either message me personally or just on here. Would love to get out and do this for once rather than just dreaming about it and staying inside :)

  • so i guess i should of waited till i looked at your extended info i just answered most of my questions lol!

  • Hahahah... Great video. I loved it when you did that thing with your lips. Classic.

  • awesome vid. Great to see something like this when its 100 degrees here in TX

    CAN'T WAIT FOR WINTER

  • Yeah .... looking mighty hot and dry in TX.......

I love me some Winter as well!!!!!

    Thanks

  • Great video! Beautiful country!

These negative temperatures you mention, I shudder to ask, Celsius or Fahrenheit?

I like to go camping in the mid north and northern South Australia in winter, it's usually quite pleasant, 20-25C, which is way better than the few times I've been in the northern Flinders Ranges in summer when it hit 40-48C one year, usually its high 30's.

  • Glad am I! Yes, Fahrenheit.....

Would love to do me some Aussie Backpacking someday......

Was there in 1993 for only a short time on work related biz. Beautiful country and people.

  • BWCA is terrific huh? Awesome in the winter. As long as you are confident and geared up warmly .... ggod to go.

    Thanks!

    Shug

  • Very cool! I've done a few trips into the northern BWCA but never in the winter. Maybe someday I'll get my courage up enough for that.

  • Ive never done any winter camping let alone in a hammock. I recently picked up a Blackbird and I plan on using it this winter. Nice vid 5/5*

  • Winter is the time to backpack .... if you are a crazy Irish feller.

you should really like the BB I hope. Thanks and here is to wonderful comfort in the cold and piney woods.

  • That's so cool Shug! I just bought some hennessy hammocks for my wife and I . Slept in them once...heaven! I actually can't wait untill winter again! it's my fav! 5/5*

  • No .... cold! LOL.

Enjoy the Hennessy .... they have a huge following.

    Bring Winter!!!!

  • Thanks for the video. It's uplifting on a Saturday morning to see someone that obviously takes a huge bite out of life. I went to college in Minneapolis and am from Northern Iowa and it is real chilly in the winter. Keep up the good work.

  • I took a bite of life and strangely it tasted like Spam!

    Thankee for the kind words.....

  • What were the first pair of black gloves you showed near the end? :o)

  • Hey .... they are called Possum Down Gloves and you can get them at Backpacking Light's website. You will have goggle that.......

  • Funny ... not really. But I did and do get a chuckle out of Ernest.

  • Shug, we're you doing an Ernest P Worrel impression on the hike there? LOL

  • Great video, Woooooooo buddy!

  • A buddy of mine tried to winter camp in his H.H. but he tapped out after a couple hours at around 0F. Thanks for sharing how you do it, I'm learning a lot!

  • i like ur song

  • One thing that I've found helpful in the sleeping bag on those really cold nights: two Nalgene bottles of hot water - one in an insulated cover, the other not. In the middle of the night when the first bottle is down to just body temp, pull the still-hot bottle from the cover and enjoy a few more hours of heat. In the morning, it really helps to drink some of that body-temp water while waiting for the stove to heat the rest of it up for breakfast.

  • wow a mini atomic works in -26 f haha

  • Hey ... you need to strap those shoes on again, snow or not.

    Thanks....

  • Hey Shug,

Another awesome video, Looks like you had an excellent trip out there. Thanks for sharing.

    Take care,

    Bluefin

  • Was a fun and challenging trip ... can't wait to do it again sometime.

You got your land-legs on huh?

enjoy your late mini-bull gifts ... read your post on Tinny's site.

  • Got my land legs back...waiting on a big shipment from Tinny any day now. Will try to do a video of the gear when I get out for a hike with it.

    Take care,

    Bluefin

  • great video, but you froze your buns off!

  • Naw ... still got my buns! Liked your woodstove and hooch hut.

  • nice video, i like it :-)

  • Loved it.....LMao

  • 'Preciate that ..... it was a mighty fun trip ... in its own weird way!

  • -26! ...and I'm complaining about +3?

  • It's all relative ... +3º is cold

  • Ya sure, you betcha that's a fine video.

  • Thanks Sam ... the SHT was asking 'bout cha...

  • Great Video Shug! It was a nippy 77 here in Phoenix today...my kind of winter!

  • My lucky number!

  • Whooo Buddy that's a Cold night out, and I'm from Maine!

    Stay Warm.

  • Warm now ..... warmish then. Thankee

  • Another great video Shug! Thanks for filming!

  • My pleasure ... my fun!

  • Whooo Buddy, for an Alabama boy that looks cold! Did your gear take care of you or did you ever wonder what you were doing out there?

  • I did have confidence in my gear .... you have to in that cold. Along with some techniques learned from other cold trips. I was having a great adventure out there!!!

  • Shug, A favorite made! thank you thank you thank you,,, Your videos are an inspiration to all and keep up the good efforts. Your music is great! Again, thanks, Alaska Larry

  • Fun efforts they are. A touch of frostbite on the nostril.

  • well I was just about to PM you to see if you thawed out yet great vid you looked frozen but you still had a great time. wife won't let me go this weekend and it's going to be a heat wave in comparison 18 degrees. I have to wait till it's above freezing Boooooo.

  • The times they were a freezing ..... fun and frigid and frosty.

  • 10.10.10.
