Anybody who calls that a foul doesn't know REAL NBA basketball. Sorry new kids on the block, but the 80's 90's NBA >>>>>pussy modern ball where refs call finger flick fouls
@shouamabane "None. That was called defense in those days"
Unless your last name was Jordan, Pippen, Grant, etc, in which case it's called a two shot shooting foul, and possibly the ball back for the flagrant call. "in those days", you got the whistle for being on the same side of the court as Jordan
That's what's so amazing about this defensive play. The Bulls got block after block after block without even touching Smith.
Unfortunately, the shot angle in this video isn't that great. If you can find the same play with camera angles shot from BEHIND the basket, you can see each clean block much better.
I don't know why Pippen gets so much credit. Grant had the first stop, then Jordan stripped him, then Pippen had the saving play. I'd say that was a great team effort period.

And the Bulls have defeated the Knicks! The Chicago Bulls with a couple of spectactular plays...Scottie Pippen stopping Charles Smith!"
@nykia31 Why would you do that? That was one of the greatest efforts I've ever seen to attempt to score. Dude had mad hustle. The Bulls just BEASTED his ass.
@nykia31 i wonder what was going through c. smith's mind when all those blocks came tumbling down on him ? i bet you he was saying "DAMN, OH GOD ,OH NO, etc. KNICKS' fans to this day blame smith for that game. don't forget the 1994 KNICKS finals game # 7 when j. starks kept shooting those 3 pointers. just awful. he should have stopped taking them & made adjustments. i've met & shook hands w/ starks. nice guy.
@d4seasons As much as I HAAAAAAAAAAATE John Starks & wanted to kill him for what he did to the Bulls, I can actually believe he's a nice guy. He worked his ass off to get to the league. I even have some friends that were ballboys for the Bulls & they say he was extremely polite & personable.
Everybody keeps talking about scottie pippen fouling charles smith if anybody looked it is clear to me that patrick ewing cleared out stacey king and knocked him to the ground when king was falling down ewing tripped over his leg stacey king did not stick his leg out and trip him up. Charles Smith was fouled on the third attempt, and the Bulls player who saved it clearly jumped out of bounds with the ball. The reason nothing was called on the Bulls was because of the "riot" that occurred in Phoenix that year when the Knicks visited the Suns in late March. The Suns were up 3-2 on Seattle, figured to make the NBA Finals at that point, and they didn't want a 7-game series featuring those same two teams in June. That's why the Knicks got screwed, not because Jordan was "god" !!
... ridiculous. The third attempt looked like all ball, and the Chicago player didn't step-out while he possessed the ball.
The Knicks lost because they were actually an inefficient offensive team, ranking twenty-second in the NBA that year in Offensive Rating (points scored per 100 possessions).
@Snoopydude13 What are you talking about? The Knicks lost because Jordan is God. It wasn't just the last play, he destroyed them ALL game. Ewing was looking lost and tired during that game, then tripped and fell at the most crucial of moments. Ewing is one of the most disappointing all time greats behind Karl Malone.
@heromiles Charles Smith was fouled twice in 4 attempts. 1=FOUL 2=Clean Block 3=Clean Block 4=FOUL If that had happened to Patrick Ewing (or Karl Malone in Utah), a foul would have certainly been called. THE REFS DIDN'T WANT BOTH NEW YORK AND PHOENIX IN THE NBA FINALS BECAUSE OF AN UGLY FIGHT ON 3/23/93 IN PHOENIX AT THE END OF THE FIRST HALF!!
@Snoopydude13 Actually, its stripped, blocked, blocked, loss the ball. The ref was right there and was closer than you were. If he got fouled, the ref would have called it. It was good defense by the Bulls. They played smart defense because they only went after the ball. They didn't hit him in the face, knock him to the ground, grab his arm, or trip him or anything like that. It was honest defense, something you apparently don't appreciate. That being said, Charles Smith's effort was superb.
Looking back at this disastrous conclusion, the Knicks had two timeouts left on the final possession. Once Starks didn't give Ewing a good enough angle to set a screen, Riley should have used a timeout to draw something up.
The end result of playing on was a broken play and a haunting memory that will last a lifetime.
you are right. the NBA stands for "No Babies Allowed". if you noticed after c. smith got blocked 5 times he hustled back down court fast against bj. that didn't help. smith slammed the ball. i wonder why ? even today whenever smith comes to new york people look & laugh. how sad !. enjoy man.****
that game on june 01, 1993 will always remain the highlight of that series. people still talk & laugh about it today. just like red sox' bill buckner in 1986. did you notice that c. smith was fouled ? the refs. didn't call it. i wonder why ? sadly the knicks lost that series. they weren't able to win one @ chicago. ****
I had a bad feeling when watching the game. From what I remember, the Knicks shot around 60% and they were only tied or up 2 at the half. The Knicks should have kept Xavier McDaniel, who put the fear of god into Scottie Pippen. They got suckered when they traded for Smith, who was damaged goods. The man had bad knees and half the player he was with the Clippers. I don't blame Smith as much as the Knicks missing 15 foul shots. That game should have never come down to relying on Smith.
my favorite all time M. Jordan game was in 1997 when he had the flu. the Bulls trailed by 16 pts. & won. besides jordan hitting the 3 pointer, impressively, l. longly hustled down court & made that dunk. that's smart sportsmanship. when you least expect it some teammate will come through.the whole bulls team played well. you have to be alert. that was the highlight of that series.
I remember in a post-game interview after Jackson came back to the Knicks and Ewing was then visiting with the Sonics, Jackson said something like: "if I hadn't of been traded, we (he and Ewing) would've won a championship by now"
@smthomas23 Knicks were too small, that was the reason for getting Smith. But letting McDaniel go was a mistake despite being over the hill that year. Top of that McDaniel said in Boston, Knicks don't need me. He was wrong.
Even though in the next season the Knicks were 1 win away from being NBA champs, I thought the '93 squad was a lot better, the best Knicks team under Riley. The end of game 5 showed, though, that they weren't quite ready for the big time. Starks passed up an open shot (when did he ever do that?), Ewing couldn't get a shot off Stacey King, and Charles Smith got... well, Charles Smithed.
This brings back horrific memories for me. As a hardcore Knicks fan I remember watching this live when I was in highschool. It was like a bad dream watching him miss all those layups!!
Big knick fan. I remember this game and shrieking at the TV. Pippen made him look like a bitch. Thas why the bulls were 6 time champions and the Knicks, well, werent
stop crying knick fans. you guys committed a charge before smith even got the ball. he was soft anyway. Furthermore you guys got us back with the scottie ppen ghost foul of hubert davis.
One of the biggest crimes in sports history. There was like 10 fouls, and what the hell is wrong with Marv Albert? A knick commentator getting so happy about the loss.
All of those blocks were all ball.. Stop crying about it.. It's not gonna make the results any different.. Face it, MJ and the Bulls owned the Knicks all of those years.. DA BULLS!!!!
no, he was fouled at least 4 times. you need to look closely. while i will admit that the D was tougher back then. and i would love to see how kobe does against that
You could say that about alot of guys now. I'd like to see someone like Kobe or McGrady try to drive to the hole on the old Pistons front court of the late 80's.
Charles Smith will never have to pay for a soda whenever he's in Chicago, that's for sure.
He probably wakes up in a cold sweat during his sleep hearing that distinctive sound of Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant swatting his weak ass lay up attempts.
"Get rejected like Charles Smith, consecutively" - Magic 1
yeah, I recall watching this game in 1993 when I was young...I was soooo dissapointed...great play by MJ, Pippen (1st defensive team in 1993) and Grant (2nd defensive team), Smith had problems with his knees, which made it very difficult for him to dunk. He would also retire in 1997 becauseofknee injuries
one of the best defensive plays ever by one of the best defensive teams in NBA history... the Knicks were tough back then but had no chance against MJ and the Bulls despite talking tough and all the other b-shit
The won't have beaten the Bulls. That is the legend that Knicks fans talk and dream about. Get real! The Bulls would have won n 5 or 6, if not even swept them. Let's not do the (what if card). Yes, the Knicks should have beaten Miami and that fight w/ suspensions killed them. Then again, we are talking about the knicks beating the 69 win Bulls, who beat the Knicks easily the year before. Get real, man. Wake up and smell reality.
I will forever despise the Knicks.,..,,,......BUT THAT IS EPIC FAILING BY MR.SMITH WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW !!!! "If at first you don't succeed...try again ?.."
Charles Smith was so soft. He should have just tried to dunk it. He would have at least gotten fouled. The Bulls were unstoppable back then. MJ owned the Knicks his whole career
Horace Grant Blocked the first shot attempt. Michael Jordan stripped the ball when Smith recovered the ball. And Scottie Pippen blocked the ball 3 times and got that shit out of there! Talk about a team nucleus. The 3 most important components of that championship squad got their hands on the ball!!!
"Smith no! Stripped by Michael! Smith again blocked! Smith again blocked! Smith again...the rebound finally Horace! Ahead to Michael! 3 SECONDS! 2! AHEAD TO BJ! HE LAYS IT UP, GOOOOOOOOOOD! THE BULLS WIN! 95-94!"
Nice try.. the BJ layup wasn't the game winner.. the bulls were already up 1 point at the time.. the BJ layup put them up 3.. with the final score 97-94.. great moment though.. i remember how crazy i was going when this was going on..
The entire Bulls team played great defense on that possession. Stacey King not only stopped Ewing from getting position down low, he also cut off Starks from the baseline, and he made Ewing catch the ball out high and almost travel or draw a charge. That made Smith catch a bad pass and set him up for the greatest defensive stand in playoff history.
lets face it, that close a game, with MJ on the other team despite being a home game, unless he got hacked across the arm, the refs are gonna swallow the whistle.
the bicth ass nigga charles smith should of dunk that shit!!!!!!!that was his definding moment of his carear and he fuckin blew it ......now he'll be remembered as a bum!!!!!!
Charles Smith was a good, courageous player. He deserves to be remembered better than as the guy who got blocked 5 or 6 times (and fouled at least once?) at the end of Game 5 of the 1993 Eastern Finals.
Sure he was fouled! ROFL!! Your faggot ass Knicks couldn't beat the Bulls then EVER. All your complaining and bitching like little girls isn't gonna change that fact bitches!
fla2000sean, what ignorance. Smith was fouled by 3 of the league's best defenders, the refs swallowed the whistle, his teammates stood and watched, he was operating on knees that significantly stifled him athletically, the Knicks blew it at the free throw line, yet he was a very good post-up force who was moved to the wing around the same time Ewing fell in love with his own jump shot. As far as being soft, you obviously don't know the man or his character, as i've known him and family 4 30 yrs
the 93 knicks was a physical team ((and was the only team to be 2-0 on any of those bulls championship teams)))but yet at the end of the game they put one of the softest players in the league(((at that time)) down the stretch... hell even pau gasol and kwame brown thinks smith was soft.
its all bout bullshit and politics, bulls are awesome, but im gonna be impartial he was fouled like they were playing streetball or that video game archrivals.

This validates that Mark Jackson, should have never been traded for Smith!!
smthomas23 2 years ago 2
I remember in a post-game interview after Jackson came back to the Knicks and Ewing was then visiting with the Sonics, Jackson said something like: "if I hadn't of been traded, we (he and Ewing) would've won a championship by now"
Like you said, shoulda kept Mark Jackson

@smthomas23 Knicks were too small, that was the reason for getting Smith. But letting McDaniel go was a mistake despite being over the hill that year. Top of that McDaniel said in Boston, Knicks don't need me. He was wrong.

Even though in the next season the Knicks were 1 win away from being NBA champs, I thought the '93 squad was a lot better, the best Knicks team under Riley. The end of game 5 showed, though, that they weren't quite ready for the big time. Starks passed up an open shot (when did he ever do that?), Ewing couldn't get a shot off Stacey King, and Charles Smith got... well, Charles Smithed.
mrmacross 2 years ago
I don't know which was worse, Charles Smth missing those shots or Spike Lee talking trash to Reggie Miller and Reggie shutting him up!

Great d by Scottie Pippen. That play signifies what Charles Smith was....a soft big. Just dunk the fucking ball

stop crying knick fans. you guys committed a charge before smith even got the ball. he was soft anyway. Furthermore you guys got us back with the scottie ppen ghost foul of hubert davis.

To everyone complaining about no foul call, it was MORE than made up for in 1994 when Pippen "allegedly" hacked Hubert Davis.

Charles Smith will never have to pay for a soda whenever he's in Chicago, that's for sure.
He probably wakes up in a cold sweat during his sleep hearing that distinctive sound of Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant swatting his weak ass lay up attempts.

yeah, I recall watching this game in 1993 when I was young...I was soooo dissapointed...great play by MJ, Pippen (1st defensive team in 1993) and Grant (2nd defensive team), Smith had problems with his knees, which made it very difficult for him to dunk. He would also retire in 1997 becauseofknee injuries

The 97 Knicks could have beaten the Bulls but the fight in Miami ruined thay chance
res340 3 years ago 2
The won't have beaten the Bulls. That is the legend that Knicks fans talk and dream about. Get real! The Bulls would have won n 5 or 6, if not even swept them. Let's not do the (what if card). Yes, the Knicks should have beaten Miami and that fight w/ suspensions killed them. Then again, we are talking about the knicks beating the 69 win Bulls, who beat the Knicks easily the year before. Get real, man. Wake up and smell reality.

Charles Smith was so soft. He should have just tried to dunk it. He would have at least gotten fouled. The Bulls were unstoppable back then. MJ owned the Knicks his whole career
sharieff8 3 years ago
Horace Grant Blocked the first shot attempt. Michael Jordan stripped the ball when Smith recovered the ball. And Scottie Pippen blocked the ball 3 times and got that shit out of there! Talk about a team nucleus. The 3 most important components of that championship squad got their hands on the ball!!!
housensomniac456 3 years ago 2
"Smith no! Stripped by Michael! Smith again blocked! Smith again blocked! Smith again...the rebound finally Horace! Ahead to Michael! 3 SECONDS! 2! AHEAD TO BJ! HE LAYS IT UP, GOOOOOOOOOOD! THE BULLS WIN! 95-94!"
MrShoTyme 3 years ago
Nice try.. the BJ layup wasn't the game winner.. the bulls were already up 1 point at the time.. the BJ layup put them up 3.. with the final score 97-94.. great moment though.. i remember how crazy i was going when this was going on..

Charles Smith was a good, courageous player. He deserves to be remembered better than as the guy who got blocked 5 or 6 times (and fouled at least once?) at the end of Game 5 of the 1993 Eastern Finals.

i couldnt agree more. smith was a solid player and evry1 knows damn well if that was mj goin up for those shots a ref wouldve blown a whistle.

Sure he was fouled! ROFL!! Your faggot ass Knicks couldn't beat the Bulls then EVER. All your complaining and bitching like little girls isn't gonna change that fact bitches!
eze42323 3 years ago
fla2000sean, what ignorance. As far as being soft, you obviously don't know the man or his character, as i've known him and family 4 30 yrs
greatvoice23 3 years ago
the 93 knicks was a physical team ((and was the only team to be 2-0 on any of those bulls championship teams)))but yet at the end of the game they put one of the softest players in the league(((at that time)) down the stretch... hell even pau gasol and kwame brown thinks smith was soft.
