If I was a rapper I would love to get the opportunity to rap over this track. . . let's not underestimate this man's brillance he is truly a talented rapper that can go in on any track. Yes I give it to you that originality is becoming something that is unfortunately going by the way side, however he's a rapper not a producer so I think he is doing his job and very well. . .

@joi124 Then i think i must have misunderstood as rapping by a much brighter better sense of artistry and originality. I think that this might be the problem as to why hip-hop records by some are treated as disposable, because there really wasn't something original in the first place. If rappers would compose their music, and lyrics, much like many other musicians do, then hip-hop music in itself would be taken more seriously.

@fearfulmatrix Yea I definitely agree and I also hold Hip Hop as a superb form of artistry. Your art is held to a higher regard if you are the originator in every aspect of the track. Trust me I share your frustration with hip hop but I think Mos Def is a lyrical expert compared to some other rappers who are completely fabricated from their beats to their bars. I interpreted him rapping over this as an opportunity to work with a great fellow musician Georgia Anne more than anything.

@fearfulmatrix Hip hop isn't taken seriously cause the powers that be exploit it for their own means. You miss the point and the history of hip hop. Hip hop is about taking existing sounds, existing tracks and making something new from it. Hip hop is referential and can only be understood as that. J Dilla was definitely creating new shit. By your standard Rock and Roll is not original because the scales, cords and vocal patterns are all heavily borrowed from the blues.

@Cooprdog Yeah in one form or another, mixing tracks looping them and adding lyrics while tweaking the sounds can definitely create something fantastic. A great example of this is Midnight Marauders by Tribe called Quest. Though in this video though, which was my main complaint is how Mos Def pretty much rips off the song, and calls it his own. You could say that he probably bought the rights to it so it doesn't matter, but that doesn't really give originality at its whole.
