  • Still love the mainstream version of this by The Walker Brothers even though it is not nearly as soulful.By the way The Original This Diamond ring was by Sammy Ambrose on Musicor not the Drifters...TheShanman!!

  • i 1st heard this song sung by Walter Jackson. its no doubt a great song but after listening to the walkers and jimmy my honest opinion walter jacksons version is still the 1 i would rather listen 2!!!

  • @MrDbonius Interesting considering that the guy who wrote this song specifically wrote it for Jimmy Radcliffe. Most people are of the opinion that his original that inspired all the rest remains the best.

  • I never heard this song before... Not by the Walker Bros or Jimmy Radcliffe... I find them equally compelling... Maybe Jimmy Radcliffe's a bit better. Either way, you HAVE to approach it with an open mind. With my open mind, I found that listening to it, I almost heard a Sam Cooke replacement brewing here... What do you all think?

  • I LOVE THIS SONG <3333

  • The Walker Brothers version is brilliant as is Walter Jackson but this is the best because of Jimmy's sensational vocals

  • @MrDoncos YOU my friend have EARS! The one dissapointment here is I find the SINGLE version (this is an alternate take which changed the mid section's improv) MORE MOVING THAN THIS particular take.

  • i need a clear version of this damn

  • wow , makes the hair in my neck stand up !!!

  • Great singer and handsome too

  • wow!! , when i liked this song up i noticed it had 1 vote down , obv a mistake otherwise i guess some mothers certainly do have em...lol.

  • straight to faves !!

  • Beautiful. I feel like I'm scoring a boxing match: Walter Jackson has it on verses, Radcliffe owns the bridge section, Walker Brothers take it on harmonies,

Draw, edge to Jackson (one judge's opinion).

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this!!

  • THIS VERSION IS GOOD AND VERY SOULFUL BUT i STILL THINK THE WALKER BROTHERS REALLY BROUGHT THIS TO THE FOREFRONT.I PLAYED THE WALKER BROTHERS WITH NUMEROUS REQUEST WHEN IT CAME OUT ON MERCURY NEVER GOT ANY RADCLIFFE REQUEST.

  • Cheers My Man... I Appreciate Your Sentiment But Don't Really Understand Your Point. There Are Countless Accounts Of "Pop" Artist Covering "Race", R&B, Or Soul Artist And Scoring The Major Promoted Hit While The "Original" Talent Remained Unheard Of. As A DJ, In Clubs Or In Radio How Did This Harsh Fact Escape You Mate? More Importantly The Song Was Written For Radcliffe Not The Walker Brothers Just Like "This Diamond Ring" Was For The DRIFTERS Not Gary Lewis & The Playboys.

  • @Mangomn2003 This a beauty , a keeper for sure. Thanx for post sister!!

  • @miketheshanmanmangan At The End Of The Video It Says This Version Is Available On Amazon & itunes On Jimmy's "Where There's Smoke There's Fire" Release From 2008. Thanks For Appreciating The Original Version Of A Brilliant New York City Uptown Big Ballad.

  • @miketheshanmanmangan ummmmmm cause they dont like blacks

  • @miketheshanmanmangan YOU ARE DEAF!

  • amazing...heard this at wigan in 1975,northern soul club

  • Yet another song I didn't know (but probably should have suspected) had multiple versions. I love the Walker Brothers' version, but this is pretty good too.

Those ghostly female backing vocals are a staple in that bleak mid-'60s R&B sound, aren't they? I love that sound ... Bessie Banks' classic "Go Now" is another example.

  • Yes! that ghostly female gospel choir is a sound I live for! Think records like: Arlo Guthrie's "City Of New Orleans", Dionne Warwick's "Make It Easy On Yourself", The Four Tops' "Ask The Lonely". Good stuff.

  • Still, I like the Walker Brother's version with their harmonies better.

  • thanks for this!!.........

  • WHAT A GREAT TRACK,NICE POST MAN.

  • Great song: I was blown away by the Walter Jackson version when I first heard it.

  • Love this one, great thanks for posting.

  • Clever posting, top artist and ace version! Thanks.

  • It sounds like The Walker Brothers pretty much carbon copied this.

    Jimmy's performance is immaculate.

  • classic *****

  • Never knew this version existed - really nice song. Walker Bros version of course has all the old memories, but this one is excellent too.

  • Brill.

  • Love the Walker Brothers version, but this is a gem. Brilliant.

  • The accoustic version of this song is superb to

  • It's Pure Magic!

  • classic sound... i love the walker brothers version of this too.. :)

  • Glad you liked the alternate take of the original version of this classic!

The song was written for Jimmy by one of his co-writers, Joey Brooks. The Brooks-Radcliffe writing team wrote many songs like "It's Been A Long Time Comin'" recorded by Tom Jones and Eric Burdon & The Animals.

The original acoustic demo of "my Ship", with Joey on piano & backing vocals, is now playing on Jimmy's myspace page and is also quite stirring.

Joey Brooks went on to write "You Light Up My Life" in the 70's.

  • Thank you for posting,I really like it Diane

  • Thankyou for posting me this, it's a gem track and of course I love it!
