I don't think that we can say that Bambi, Flower and Thumper act out of character because in the first movie, we hardly see their personalities as children - but in THIS movie, this is all about their childhood, so to speak. So obviously we're not gunna know what they were like as kids if we didn't get a decent enough idea in the first one.

But I agree, nothing beats the first Bambi. <3

Actually, the pedantic mistake that bugged me the most was when the Great Prince said he met Bambi's mother in that meadow when they were both fawns. Problem is, in the original, the Great Prince was twice as old as the oldest deer, so they could not possibly have met when they were both fawns.

It wasn't a mistake. It is a common effect in animations to exclude small details until they are really needed to be shown. It is just the animator cutting a corner.

Besides if you look at it in a logical way, the water would have pressed the quills down and you wouldn't see them anyways because they were the same color as Bambi's skin.
