It sounds like injector knock to me. I would feel each injector line and see if you can differentiate between them. One line may have a distinctive tap feeling on it.
If you have blowby the only problem that wouldn't get ruled out is piston slap. My d16y7 in my car has made a similar moise for 3 winters now. Slaps for about 10 seconds after starting them goes away.. I think mine is more oil pump related since I dont burn oil and I have good compression. The blowby is probably from bad valve seats/seals. Those motors are pretty high compression They tent to leak with age. Just let it warm up nice before you drive it and it should be good for a while.
The answer to the original question is now available under this username - see the results of stripping down the engine there. Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. The tapping / hammering was piston slap. Everything else on the engine seemed fine. A piston broke around 259,000 miles. The car now has a replacement OM616 engine and is still on the road.
the noise is the fan belt. i have eexperienced that before. i think it just needs ajusting. and is that a right hand drive model?... i noticed that the battery is on the opposite side that of on mine.
That engine sound very clear It needent any repairing, U know thats diesel its normal to noisy, idiots! and the camshaft running over in this engine a 1 million kms!
Hmmm i can hear the tapping too what is it an Inline 4 or 6? and what year is the vehicle, i may not know alot but it sounds like something is loose inside the engine or about to come loose.
Thanks for the comment. It's a '4 pot'. 1982. It sounds 'high up' i.e. from the head?. Theories range from piston slap to tappets/rockers, camshaft, camshaft bearings, worn valve cap nuts or injection prechambers. It's been like that for years! It's very distictive - someone out there may have had the same problem. Oh yeah, there's a fair bit of blow-by also when the oil cap is removed - but not too much oil burning though. Mileage is 236K. Hmmm!
THIS MOTOR IS STILL OK FOR 60K AT LEAST

It's a piston. Check for a stuck injector, it pees fuel into one cylinder then just trashes the rings/wall when you get on it.
It's not the fing fanbelt...

How'd you get the valve cover so clean and shiny?

Sounds normal for a 240D. It is a noisy SOB when cold, a bit quieter when warmed up.
Adjusting the valves can help for a while. How many miles? I call mine a comfortable tractor...

you'd have to dismantle the engine to find out the cause(s).

overhaul it. You know your engine and you don't know what you get.

Thanks MrQXR. To overhaul or to swap? That is the question. Head will come off first though, out of curiosity. Then we shall see what we shall see!

Thanks Junladia - I'll go and look at that again. I've done it a few times already so maybe I'm getting it wrong everytime! Practice makes perfect!

it is quite normal for it to sound that way. try to set the valve rocker arm gaps.
