That brings back memories. As a kid growing up in Texas, that was one of the countless critters we used to play with. I knew it was a wingless wasp. Actually, there is another ant that was about half that size that also had some white bands, too, and we called it a "cow ant". I used to pick them up by the sides (like you do with a crawdad), till one day, it whipped that ridiculously long stinger around and right into my thumb! Ouch! I'll never forget that sound they make. Those damn things hurt extremely bad... one got me good at the age of 7... and it sounded just like this one in the video... That has got to be an ant from the devil!
there called cow killers because when a cow is eating grass and has one of them craw up the nose it swings its stinger like a whip all around its nose. and the stings swell up and block the air passage (cows cant breath through there mouths) and the cows die from lack of air
I moved to GA from PA about 5 years ago & found one of these in the yard. I had no idea what it was, so I caught it & brought it in the house to look it up online. When I found out what it was my mom yelled at me to get it out of the house, lol. I saw it several times after that and it always chased me. We recently moved to NC & we found one in the yard right after we moved in.
They are really neat creatures. One time my kids caught one and I had never seen one. My kids said, "Mommy he's talking to us." And I thought my kids had watched too many cartoons! Then I heard it "talking." It turned out to be a great "pet." You can keep them for about a year, sometimes two. They like jelly and water (other sweets too). You can't hold them, but you can observe them and give them things to climb and air. We must have had males, because they didn't have a stinger like that.

these bastards are nearly impossible to kill. for our high school "bug collection" required project shit. these were "bonus points" being rare as they were. but i found one and could NOT get the pin to go through its thorax to put on the styrofoam. i shoved and pushed and sweated on it and when it finally DID poke through, it slammed through suddenly and made a large POW sound. it was creepy. and dont hate me hate the alabama education system.

@r0bz1ll4 Yes I understand what you mean Mutillids tend to have very hard exoskeletons I tried pinning one once and it broke apart :(... but if you think that's bad, you should try pinning an ironclad beetle (Zopherus) I've heard you need a drill to get a pin through those guys! :O ALso they are popular in certain cultures.. because of their though outer shell some people use them as jewellery and put gems on them as wear them as broaches...
