All these bro,emo,fag-core bands should realize that just sweeping the same e minor arpeggio shape with a fucking dean or schecter gets you nowhere. Get some real vibrato and TONE. Guthrie ftw.
I was arguing with this black girl at my work about how talentless modern mainstream artists are. Shes telling me to listen to kanye west garbage and the strokes saying how their riffs are catchy. I just checked out one of the songs she recommended and right away i checked back on guthrie stuff to heal my wounds.
Anyways, she thinks slash is best guitarist ever so i told her to check out greg howe and guthrie and unfortunatly the radio has brainwashed her into thinking that they suck.
@maxomilian nothing to get so worked up over. If everyone understood it then it wouldn't be groundbreaking. Besides, mainstream stuff has its place, it gives people the opportunity to listen to things without thinking. Lastly, slash may not be able to stand as a titan among today's guitar players but he was decent when GNR where big. Its all preference, as a guitar player I'm biased more towards guthrie, but I doubt the girl you spoke with really knows anything about music in a theoretical sense
@maxomilian Hey idiot, Guthrie may be the best technical guitarist and look like the best guitarist in the world to other musician, but you can't argue on taste. Some people will think Guthrie music doesn't sound so good even though it's impressive. I don't like Kanye West and I love Guthrie Govan, but I accept other people's opinion. That's what makes diversity and allow people to make music such as Govan's.
@tomtom3380 I don't get the whole "just technique" thing. Everything you do is a technique! When you pick, when you pull off, even when you just fret! Its all technique! The point is it sounds good! And as far as his solos being the same, its because everyone has their personal style. BB King always plays the same, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, whoever! Its just his style.
Your english is better than your logic at least. I think John Mayer is an intensely underrated guitar player, but doesn't have one 10th the ability or sophistication that Guthrie has... This is perhaps the most unmusical example of his playing I've ever seen, but Guthrie is a true Trail Blazer. His album transcends instrumental guitar wankery and probably caused at least a thousand shredders to give up altogether...
haha this is probably the first guitar video that has simply made me laugh. he's so good its just ridiculous, and i laughed at the fact that he and i play the same instrument.
I always feel like he's not the most original player - almost a kind of human guitar dictionary. Yet somehow he's the one I want to listen to the most. Some players' genius is their originality, other players' genius is their note selection, phrasing etc & Guthrie is the ultimate example of the latter. I NEVER get bored listening to this man - even when he talks he sounds like a messiah.
@TheSbuster me and my friend were just saying the same thing the other day. I talked to guthrie personally and he said he just transcribed tons of other players songs and licks as his musical training. He was never a reader or anything,he just steals licks.
@sirus1987 lol...like i can play almost like victor wooten...b/c i listened to so much bass and learned...even easy stuff classic rock and like 3 doors down...you GOT to play along! that's all there is too it..if you can learn ONE guthrie lick...you are ONE out of FOUR steps to being closer to being a FANTASTIC guitarist
Guthrie is influenced by Hendrix a lot as others do. if their were not Hendrix the contemporary music would be lot different from now. also Guthrie's style would be different. and I'm sure Guthrie will influence to his next generation like Hendrix did.
@UnGuitare but hendrix was influenced by rory, and im sure rory was influenced by some random bums on the street that came from jazz, that came from classical, etc.... the point im tryin to make is i dont think any 1 person sticks out as an influence, i think everything influences you! if you dont like something, you wont play it- that is still an influence. i may seem dickish right now but im not tryin to be, do you got what im tryin to say though?
@UnGuitare i think guthrie is inlfuenced not just by hendrix, i think that different styles different awesome guitar players melted into one amazing and perfect guitar player.
@UnGuitare i think that guthrie is influenced not just by hendrix, i think that different styles from different awesome guitar players melted into one astounding guitar player.

I completely agree with you lightningstrat. just because he can play way more notes in a second than, say, eric clapton, it doesn't mean that he plays with no feeling. people have to analyze his phrasing, articulation, note choices, pauses, etc before coming to that kind of conclusion which a lot of people don't do and its kind of ignorant and naive when they see a player plays fast passages and immediately labeled him a player with no feeling just because its not the kind of style they prefer.
there are lots of mindless shredders out there, but guthrie is definitely not one of them. he's one who keeps pushing the boundaries of modern rock fusion and guitar instrumental music. enough said people, just listen to erotic cakes!
senseless to argue with anyone out there when it comes to guthrie.
he just managed to reach sth that every guitarist wants to reach. a personal goal to be able to play actually everything, every style, not only in a low skilled way, but in an amazing high skilled way.
there is probably no situation in which guthrie cant pull out sth amazing, fast or not, he knows what hes doing and he does it in a musical way.
@freakguitar1 i actually agree, though i doubt he can play EVERYthing. like .. there are guitarists out there that are so advanced in their own styles, like pat metheny, joe passm django, whatever. i mean he can play almost everything right of the bat, but theres things hed still have to figure out. he could if he wanted though. erotic cakes is tasty and shows how many both old and modern styles he can play. guthrie is truly a unique artist.
@JustusFriedolin ye i totally have to agree with you. actually i could not have said it better. sometimes im so enthusiastic becuz of tasty guitar playing haha
ofc he cant do it ALL, but as you say, if he wants to he will be probably be able to do it.

senseless to argue with anyone out there when it comes to guthrie.
he just managed to reach sth that every guitarist wants to reach. a personal goal to be able to play actually everything, every style, not only in a low skilled way, but in an amazing high skilled way.
there is probably no situation in which guthrie cant pull out sth amazing, fast or not, he knows what hes doing and he does it in a musical way.

@JustusFriedolin ye i totally have to agree with you. actually i could not have said it better. sometimes im so enthusiastic becuz of tasty guitar playing haha
ofc he cant do it ALL, but as you say, if he wants to he will be probably be able to do it.
would love to hear some death metal stuff in the style of Blotted Science / Ron Jarzombek :DDD

I agree, GG (can be Guthrie Govan or Guitar God) can make you have multiple eargasm just by playing a couple riffs.

You must be a Herman Li fanboy. Do me a favor and go away and never come back, go listen to shit music while we enjoy the music of this guitar god.
