this sounds nice but video just doesnt give the P-51 justice.

I live on martha's vineyard which has the biggest grass airfield in the country called katama. 3 pretty long strips.

There was an airbird show which had a C-47 as well. I digress. The 51 started up and WOW that sound... it took off and did a couple REAL low fly bys at like 400mph (i asked the pilot how fast he was going)... needed earplugs almost... it shakes the ground as it flys by. very impressive aircraft.

Nah, probably under 200. At Reno though it runs about 340 or so.

Depends on what motor they're running. A race mustang can get up to 480 or so. This is a stock motor and pushing it to get it over 400 wouldn't make it last very long.

actually with its merlin engine it could do 440 in level flight at full throttle and can go past 500 in a steep dive

Ahhhh... a sound that will forever be recorded in my memory... I miss hearing that. There's some rich guy at my school (Dowling College) that has one and once in a while you'll hear that engine wirring up and watching the P-51D gracefully lift into the air.

Actually the P-51 was originally a Canadian design but taken and used by the Americans.
