This guy pisses on America while taking money from an institution based in a country where at least he can say stuff like this crap and not go to jail. I find him to just as disgusting as anything he might rail against.
Edward Said was a man of class and prestige. He used rational and sensible reasoning as opposed to being dictated by mere emotion...that is rare today.
On April 16, 2003, Said seems to be summarizing his work and taking leave of life itself. He argues so lucidly here that "democracy" is by no means an already agreed upon concept, and that people who happen to be Arab or Muslim should continue to work for who they want to be. Professor Said is truly a great American. For his concept of "citizenship," "participation," "service" to humanity, and the fight against apathy, listen to a video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8347122643868419211
Whao... ... Edward Said really hates the American government dude.... haha... On a literary note, he is only focusing on American Orientalism. Those who know Ideological criticism might wanna use this critical technique to consider what he just said.
@BerlinerOmar In his books, he focussed mainly on European Orientalism; only a few chapters were concerned with American orientalist representations. Orientalism reached its apogee during the colonial period from 1600-1945; then the process of decolonization changed the landscape, sometimes for the better, not always.
