Service of is part of the game. We can only speculate if Waldner would have lost more had it not been for his serves, personally I don't thinks so. He destroyed Ma-Lin and Timo boll in the 2004 Olympics when it was already illegal to hide your servers and he was 38 years old, 15 years their senior.
Gentlemen, the table tennis game starts with the serve! Whether Waldner wins a lot of games based on his serves or not, it is how the game starts, everyone knows this..Meaning that all other players and everybody can also work on their serves..Take a look a Ma Lin: has worked hard on his serves but also on his service return..
Waldner is a legend, no doubt, but in different times there have been others who were at the top and is difficult to compare players in different periods.
Waldner built his career on a fantastic but very hidden service. I spoke to various world top players and I heard more than once that without such service Waldner would have lost much more, so I desume he was, more or less, as good as the other World top players (but for his service)
Brilliant. This was held at Thornaby Pavillion, I watched this match and the quarters game against Kim Song Hui when i was 12!!! Amazing stuff. Yoo went on to win the Olympics soon after this

90s point replay style is very dramatic (is better).

is that otcharov at 01:17 on the left side?
ikaros21 1 month ago
@ikaros21 unlikely, this match was in 1987...Ovtcharov was born in 1988..

Yoo Nam Kyu and Kim Taek Soo have the best traditional penhold backhands.

Waldner wins because of his serves. But the no hidden serve rule and larger ball pretty much kill his play. So do not imitate him.

@waldner97
No I do not agree.
Waldner is a legend, no doubt, but in different times there have been others who were at the top and is difficult to compare players in different periods.

He is fantastic though.

Good thing they changed the format to 11 points, no more dumping at the end.

Now that is a find! The legendary 1988 Olympic Champion Yoo Nam Kyu at his best. No one could withstand his fast attacks at that time.

Awesome dude. Never seen this one before, thanks.
This must have been before he won the 89 worlds.

@olaniyi570
presumably circa 87-so before Yoo Nam Kyu had won the Olympics in Seoul. So the 1st two Olympic champions both in action!!
