i can't decide on which version is better, cantonese or madarin. cantonese has a sweet and lullaby-like voice so it sounds like it would be sung during mulan's time but it's kinda quiet. the madarin one has a stronger voice and it has more feeling but it's too modern ish. both are so good!

@Chinastar85 ...several centuries at the very least to change, yet it look less than one for Mandarin to become the common tongue of Beijing. Beijing also became a Manchurian-only region of China, while the Chinese were all forced to the south. This is why their language remained mostly intact there. In fact, Mandarin is an English-fied word of a Portuguese term that refers to a court official of the Manchurian Qing. Mandarin is called "officials speech" in Chinese, coincidence? Certainly not.
@Chinastar85 You are correct. It is actually a Manchurian modified ver. of the Chinese language. Matteo Ricci's (court official of the Ming Dynasty) dictionary of romanized Chinese had preserved the final stop consonants p, t, k and m, and pronunciations were said to be similar to the Wu and Yue dialects. When Manchurians took over, Mandarin was formed in the name of 以漢治漢, by using their own modified Chinese language to rule the Chinese. It is common sense that languages take...
@dancinforkenji63 lol, when we Cantonese speak it sounds ugly but thanks to having up to 11 tones, we are able to sound like a fucking piano when we sing.
So... if Fa Mulan was a real girl, would she be more likely to speak Cantonese than Mandarin? Or rather, would the Chinese she spoke be closer to Cantonese than Mandarin?
@markmeasinner yes, it would sound closer to cantonese than mandarin. however, neither cantonese nor mandarin existed at the time mulan would have existed. just like spanish and french did not exist at the time of Caesar and the ancient roman republic, there was latin. and likewise, there was Classical Chinese (or middle Chinese). Cantonese preserves more of the vocabulary and phonetics of middle chinese (kind of like how Italian preserves more latin phonetics than French).
@markmeasinner While we can't be sure that Latin sounded closer to Italian or Spanish.....we can be quite sure it did not sound anything like modern French. Same deal with Mandarin, which, like French, made a LOT of word-final consonants silent. The consonants t, p, m, k, etc. are no longer pronounced at the end of a word, but they still are in Cantonese. Hope that wasn't too much info.....
I am not Cantonese or Mandarin. Cantonese is a nice language because many of its speakers are speaking the language of their ancestors. On the other hand, many Mandarin speakers are actually of non-Mandarin descent yet for some reason still take so much pride in a language that is not even theirs. To the celebration of those who stay true to their roots despite the odds of a controlling government against them. They speak the language of their ancestors, not the language of their oppressor.
BOTH VERSIONS R BEAUTIFUL! I'm learning both and I like this version cause of its obvious strength/emotion in the voice, but with the Mandarin its smoother and u can say more approachable, plus more ppl can learn Madarin as a base.
Nah, in all seriousness, Cantonese is a really nice language. It's my mother's native tongue whereas my father's is Mandarin so I'm a confused little boy.
cantonesse is one of the few dialects that i can sort of understand besides mandarin (yea). Cantonesse in speech doesn't sound that great but in singing it's beautiful.
Wow..... unbelievably awesome! The "Mandarin" Mulan showed more quiet frustration transitioning and has power in the voice, while the "Cantonese" version of Mulan displayed gentle sadness and has a soothing quality to it.... Although I am leaning towards the Cantonese version, I still like both versions! Both versions receive a 10/10.....
Beautiful. This gave me chills.

@thatgraymoon As an English and German speaker, not understanding either (Chinese) language, I think both Cantonese and Mandarin are gorgeous! :D
Most languages to me are gorgeous though, except English... it's.. a little boring, but maybe that's just because I'm a native English speaker. XD

但我知 若我依自己的心意
會叫我爸媽失意 水中女子跟我 面對面 我非我
爲何我跟倒影差距這麽多?
真可再掩飾我 水中花 鏡中我
何時我的倒影可反映我心窩?
何時這朵水中花會真正像我?
