I personally think that prisoners should not be treated inhumane but this is going to far. They should not be treated this good for killing, raping , etc .
Just because there are facilities that look nice, don't think there aren't mental and physical torments going on inside there. There are many ways to make a prisoner unhappy. One of them is to put them outside for a while during a Norwegian winter.

Speaking from a ex con perspective, I think it makes sense. When in jail here in America(lousiana) it's the lowest, of the lowest living conditions. You learn to adapt, to living like animals.. In Norway, where they treat prisoners like people, they have a 10 times lower crime rate per capita than the U.S. where they treat prisoners like animals. Maybe this is also due to the fact that in progressive Scandinavian countries they also tend to treat everyone with more respect and have better, more available social services for people in general.

So I'd guess by those numbers that making prisons like a Hell Hole isn't working very well, yet the Norwegian way is...at least better by a large margin.

It might look like a spa, but at the end of the day it is still a prison. A prison in not about the physical comforts. It is about the simple fact that the prisoner knows that he has no freedom. House arrest and an ankle monitor is still a prison, but a lot less cost to society. Rehabilitation is NOT the same as giving them that kind of luxury! They do NOT deserve it! Even if I did something to deserve to do time, I would have felt this as "not a punishment", but a... well.. They still lose all of their freedom. They're still in prison. But this way they learn from their mistakes, rather than spending years becoming hardened against the state, and learning from hardcore criminals. There's a reason recidivism is extremely high in the states.
While I agree that the Halden facility might be a bit over the top, I don't see what's so wrong about preparing inmates for a future outside the walls. Everyone just assume we put rapists and murderer into these luxury facilities to begin with. We don't! We have different sort of prisons, starting out rough if need be, then ease it up, allowing inmates to grow as human beings. What good can a blank, stinky cell do for anyone?

Even if Norway have great statistics when it comes to getting criminals rehabilitated it creates anger and a lot of despair from victims and families. I think this place should be more like a school. They're main objective is to rehabilitate you. [like schools to teach] You do something wrong, and it goes on your permant record. You do alot of things wrong, and you get "detention" or "suspensions". Do alot of things wrong... BOOM send u to a hellhole Mexican style prison.
But I hate the American Judicial System. SENTENCES ARE FAR TOO LONG. Its one thing to teach a lesson, but its another thing to be given a harsh sentence. you know how in middle school, when you do something bad but you get punished WAYYY to severly, it drives you crazy. You never even think about what you did wrong in the first place. But this is in the judicial system, with your sentence being 10 20 or 30 years. Caged in metal cells fearing and panicing for your future can drive anyone CRAZY.

Anyway, some more details about prison sentencing in Norway: Only two thirds of a sentence is prison time, the rest is probation. And during the last half of the actual prison time they get to go home on leave at least once a month. American prisons are not luxurious but many of the guards just don't give two shits about what happens within the cells and they cram about 15-20 rapists and murderers together in one cell and many guards have admitted to not intervene with these fights and let them carry on with it because "it's just what they do" and they're usually fights over something petty like toilet roll or who gets the top or bottom bunk. the USA has the highest PER CAPITA, and total number of incarcerated people in the world, 6 times the next western nations rate (UK) and almost double that of Russia. Rehabilitation is NOT the same as giving them that kind of luxury! They do NOT deserve it! Even if I did something to deserve to do time, I would have felt this as "not a punishment", but a... well.. Yeah. Change Halden Fengsel into a hotel. Besides, with the population in US, and the differences in citizen classes, and the number of people living there, it's natural to have a higher % of crime. @imtonasty Justice is blind. What I think has no bearing on the matter. The fact is that treating prisoners with compassion, and actually trying to help them, works better than just locking them up and treating them like cattle.
They still lose all of their freedom. They're still in prison. But this way they learn from their mistakes, rather than spending years becoming hardened against the state, and learning from hardcore criminals. There's a reason recidivism is extremely high in the states.

While I agree that the Halden facility might be a bit over the top, I don't see what's so wrong about preparing inmates for a future outside the walls. Everyone just assume we put rapists and murderer into these luxury facilities to begin with. We don't! We have different sort of prisons, starting out rough if need be, then ease it up, allowing inmates to grow as human beings. What good can a blank, stinky cell do for anyone?

I don't think American recidivism is because of the nice prisons. The problem is our felons get out and are essentially blackballed for life. They don't get a chance to reintegrate into society because nobody will hire them, and the result is they have to return to crime.

Even if Norway have great statistics when it comes to getting criminals rehabilitated it creates anger and a lot of despair from victims and families. We have a lot of examples of criminals laughing at the system and live criminal careers, more and more foreigners are in Norwegian "prisons" .. Sure, that doesn't give them a free pass, but it does mean that they haven't been taught right from wrong like most of us. So, if they can be taught that, away from society, then why not? Its one thing to teach a lesson, but its another thing to be given a harsh sentence. you know how in middle school, when you do something bad but you get punished WAYYY to severly, it drives you crazy. American prisons are not luxurious but many of the guards just don't give two shits about what happens within the cells and they cram about 15-20 rapists and murderers together in one cell and many guards have admitted to not intervene with these fights and let them carry on with it because "it's just what they do" and they're usually fights over something petty like toilet roll or who gets the top or bottom bunk. I think the recidivism is based on the system outside of prison instead of the prison system itself. They have a better education system then we do.

the USA has the highest PER CAPITA, and total number of incarcerated people in the world, 6 times the next western nations rate (UK) and almost double that of Russia. It should also be mentioned that Norway refused to extradite a convict to the usa for prison term because USA prisons are considered a violation of human rights in Norway. Oh and their cops for the most part dont even carry guns. Your american imperial mindset it holding your country hostage, not the bankers.
