I lose off you Stacy Ann. That is not true. They feel homosexuality is Euqal to being a Pediphiler. They are not angry people because of their religious views. Your free to state your opinions but no.
exactly..referring to the bible verse that says "slaves obey your masters". the slaves they took from west africa weren't even christians so why would it matter to them. the bible says alot of things , but they highlighted the part they wanted to use as justification for their actions. thou shalt not kill was left out. they do the same thing with gays today , judge and harass gays like the bible says not to, but highlight leviticus to justify it.
ok..they were muslims? my point was the slaves taken from west africa weren't christians...so the verse from the bible used to justify their enslavement ..would be a bullshit excuse...because they had no knowledge of the bible ..or at least they didn't follow it's teachings.
My wife posted under my acct, but allow me 2 jump in. You have the weak point. You said "the slaves taken from west africa weren't christians so the verse from the bible used to justify their enslavement would be a bullshit excuse". I think my wife was saying ok, they weren't familiar with the bible, but they were with the koran, which ALSO justifies slavery, thus ignorance of the bible would be irrelevant, hence "what's your point?" Bah. Religion should go the way of slavery: a vestigial shame
First of all,Jamaican people are not ignorant. The average Jamaican knows that being gay has nothing to do with pedophilia. If you visited Jamaica instead of taking one person's view of what Jamaicans think then you would know that.
And it is not only Jamaicans that have something against homosexuality,it many people from many countries that feel that homosexuality is wrong
Marmackk, just because the majority hold certain beliefs does not make them right. Anyone that thinks something is wrong with gay people or homosexuality is ignorant, because they don't understand sexual orientation. If you understood the meaning of sexual orientation, you would realize that nothing is wrong with gays or homosexuality. The problem is prejudice people, not gays.
People's beliefs on homosexuality stem from 2main things.
1)Their religion..all major and a lot of non-mainstream religions believe that homosexuality is wrong because that is what their creator tells them.. and they have a right to believe that.
2)A lot of people who are not religious believe that the homosexual act is also wrong...they do not see the act as being natural.
Here's my problem: It's when people take their beliefs to justify discriminating against a group of people. That's the only time I have a problem with people. So, if you take your beliefs and say you are going to discriminate against me, that's when I'm gonna go after you full speed. You have people that cite their religion to argue that people should not marry out of their ethnic/race group too. I respect their beliefs too. It's when you people want to equate beliefs into DISCRIMINATION.
I believe that a person can be born predisposed to many things, but I also believe a person has a choice as to whether to act on those things or not even though it is hard.
There are many people who are born with homosexual tendencies who believe without being pressured by anyone that it is wrong.
I'm against discrimination ,but most religions while accepting that people may be born gay, still see the act of gay sex as wrong and going against what their creator tells them.
I can argue religion with you all day, but it would be pointless to do so. enslaving Africans? If you were told that you were a piece a shit by the dominate group in society, you would start to believe it. Therefore, many gays believe that something is wrong with them. Have you ever heard of self hate? You might be against discrimination, but the dominate people in your group want to use their religion to discriminate. Do you know that people used religion to justify enslaving Africans.
Gay people love to compare their struggle to the oppression of Black people. They also like to use the fact that people who enslaved Africans used religion to justify what they did .The fact is that slave masters twisted the meaning of the word 'slave' in the Bible, which merely means servant,to quell their guilty consciences because they knew that what they were doing was wrong and their Creator was against it.People against gay sex believe that their creator has explicity said it is wrong.
Lol! Lol! Lol! I knew you were going to say that gay people love to compare their struggle. I was going to type that their are differences, but my hands got tired. Listen, you don't have to explain scripture because I can also say that anti-gays are twisting the Bible too. So your interpretation of the Bible might tell you that homosexuality is wrong, but my interpretation tells me that the Bible has gay love stories, Jesus respected gay people, and Jesus saved a gay Ethiopian Eunuch.
Let us agree to disagree, there are many people who have a very strong view against homosexuality but do not discriminate and are against violence towards gay people.
In most cases, it's prejudice because your kind go beyond holding their beliefs; they want to make their personal beliefs into laws, and that's whats going on today. There are also many people who hold a strong view against interracial marriage and women in the clergy. Also, I never saw any 'Christians' speak out against violence towards gay people. By the way, I can defend myself. I'm not worried about the dominate group bringing violence. If they want to, bring it on.
I am not trying to insult you. But again anyone who disagrees with homosexuals is seen as prejudiced. And as for interracial marriage ,most if not all religions see racism as going against what their creator says is right. Also for the record there are many Christians who even though they do not agree with homosexuality detest violence
against homosexuals.Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean they do not exist.
I agree there are some Christians who detest violence against homosexuals. What are people disagreeing about? If you are a real heterosexual person, why does it matter that the next person is not? Maybe you have not studied enough history because many individuals have used religion to justifiy things. I don't care if those people were right or wrong. I'm simply stating that people used religion to justify their prejudices. And there are also Christians who don't have problems with gays.
I just simply said that people used the Bible to persecute Africans. Regardless, if those people were right or wrong, they used the Bible to persecute African slaves. That's no way comparing gays and blacks. People should not use their religion to justify prejudice, period. Blacks, women, gays, Jews, or whoever. And I personally don't give a damn about you or the next person's interpretation of anything; especially when it relates to defending your personal prejudices in the name of God.
It's not prejudice..just because you do not agree with something doesn't mean you are prejudiced,it means you believe a certain act as immoral whether that is shaped by religion or a principle.
Where does the bible have gay love stories..could you cite the scripture/s that support that please and yes Jesus loves everyone gay or straight but that doesn't mean that he agrees with everything that everyone does.
so exactly what does your belief stem from? what is the divine justification for abolishing homosexuality? It's really not enough to vaguely quote a deity, I could make one up and be just as justified as you... what's YOUR real world justification?
in the caribbean our religious beliefs destroy us. since the beginning of time religion has been the main cause of apartheid and the spark of war. religious people proclaim violence to be bad and preach peace and gentleness...until an "abomination" occurs and they themselves take physical action. even the non-religious haters use religion as an excuse to abuse and murder anyone who doesn't fit into the "correct way of life"..which includes gays.
so why not stop acting like you're black? or jamaican? you know why? because that is who you are. it's okay to be gay, just don't act like you are. do you even know how stupid that sounds? homophobia encompasses all fear based reactions to homosexuality, the most extreme being murder. but simply not wanting to meet someone that is gay is also homophobia as it reduces a people to a word. gay. just as a misogynist verbally reduces women to a thing to be owned. wrong is wrong. homophobia is wrong.

CONCLUSION:
I think it would serve gays best if they keep their lifestyles to themselves and not try to impose it on others or flaunt it in any way to provoke anger from the general heterosexual population.
I don't know what it benefits the people who are determined to slander Jamaica's name and spread propaganda about its culture thus creating a negative picture to those interested in visiting and enjoying the general warmth and beauty it has to offer.
Oh, get off your high horse. You can't impose homosexuality... That's absurd. Acknowledge that your country is a retrograde, violent place, where people can't be themselves... Only then can change occur.
It is true that there have been attacks on gays from heterosexual Jamaicans, again, reports would reveal that it's mostly a result of provocation by homosexuals and with the island being one that is generally intolerant to this lifestyle, reprisals are usually imminent; in other words if gays decide they want to show off their flamboyancy in the presence of those who absolutely loathe that type of behavior, they might just retaliate in anger.

Stacey is just (and have been) exaggerating the existence of homophobia in Jamaica. First of all, homophobia is not prevalent in Jamaica.
By definition, homo-phobia = a fear of homosexuality. Jamaicans don't fear it, they abhor it. Jamaicans don't go around hunting gays either. by far, most of the instances that involve violence with gays have usually been proven to start right there in the gay community, amongst themselves.
You are in denial about the crimes committed in your country against gays. It's reprehensible by any standards, even that of the Bible. Quote me a passage in your Bible, where it says it's ok to shoot, burn and persecute gays?

"Man to Man is so unjust". In Jamaican culture, homosexuality is wrong!!!! The holy book talks about God destroying soddom and Gomoro. If the US was 100% against homosexuality, then there would be no issue and it would indeed be outlawed, but because a small country like Jamaica is against it, it a big issue. We have a right to view homosexuality as being wrong. You cannot take that away from us. I hope that the HON. Bruce Golding NEVER changes the law.
it's one thing to think homosexuality is wrong its another to act in violence because of your feelings towards it.
i just find it unbelievable that Jamaicans(or anybody else) claim they act in violence or they dislike homosexuals because it's in the bible. Murder and Judging, among a handful of other sins happen every single day, anywhere you go, why aren't these things frowned on?
i think staceyann is a very intelligent woman.. i've heard her speak and preform some of her poetry i think she speaks the truth and does so graciously. there's nothing foolish about having an educated opinion
i agree. I wish society would stop looking at the irrelevance of peoples lives and look at whats relevant. but thats what makes the world tick. judging!
@kekoaT Yeah....but she drops the ball when she starts with that "GAY-SHIT".....I mean, that should be personal... keep that shit 2 urself....dont shove it down our throats.
@beloit22 I see your point but what right has mob mentality to decide on man's life just because of his or her sexuality? There's tons of problems in Jamaica like police/government corruption, gang violence, poverty and countless fatherless children etc to be worried about such a triviality of sum1 else business in their own bedroom lol
@beloit22 Have no problem with one's sexual orientation/ or preference; should respect everyone, no matter who they are/what they are/ or choose to be..Have a problem though with her her reference to Jamaicans as a violent people..Secondly, to say that the cause of violence is due to sexual repression..And, that pedophiles violate children because they're sexually repressed..Wow!!!..I'm just taken aback, to say the least..Don't want to be rude, but there really is no proper word for STUPID!!!
Jamaica has a deep fear of sexuality but yet the place is so promiscuious with hate filled crimes and they use the bible as an excuse to further their own prejudice
Jamaica is morally confused&stuck in a leathal time warped Victorian attitude towards sexuality. Thts wen slavery abolished-Jamaicans had 2cling on 2ther Victorian values 2build a new culture its all they knew&had. Its so deep-Lesbians wer viewd by Queen Victoria 2not exist she fort it too silly a concept. UK changed Jamaica has continued 2play broken record cos its their broken record I c why they keep it. Victorian values r their foundation changin wud b disruptin their foundation. its a shame
The woman behind the desk at 3:09 in the video "Oliver Samuels - Airport Part Two" The samething that happened to Stacyann Chin happened to her I heard. The video is on youtube. I always wanted to know what happened to her now I guess I know.
nothing happen to her, she's still a big poet/writer/ story teller in the US. and to answer your other question, if ppl in Jamaica suspect your gay, a gay men has more of a chance of being killed, where a lesbian has more of a chance of being raped.
cannot see that the SAME mindset that condemns them all over the world is very same that is homophobic. because when you study this you find that these always come together in the patriarchy: misogyny, homophobia, racism, hatred of animals, and Nature!!!
OH!!!you tell it like it IS. So true. the religion these people follow is not real religion. real religion is an embrace of community, of animals, of Nature. it is NOT repression, suppression and murder and incite to murder people considered evil because of their sexuality.
what is SO sad is that these black people cannot see that---part 2 soon
No matter how much one may ignore his or her sexuality, it wont be changed. - This is one reason why I don't believe in these reparative therapist and organizations.
Pure ignorance really...The bible says nothing about priests sustaining celibacy it's mans own decision. Where ever there is man... there will be war, violence and trouble. The issue is not religion. Religion is the mask they hide behind. The issue is unfullfilment, poverty and great depression.
StacyAnn..One's sexual identity, a human right..STRONGLY suggest, though, that you ABORT that severely defective argument that correlates the rise of violence in Jamaica/ Priests raping children with SEXUAL REPRESSION..I mean, to give credence to sick pedihiles..My dear, I assure you that the sexually repressed.. Homophobic Jamaicans are totally WRONG and truly IGNORANT to equate being gay to being a pedophile. Jamaican homophobes are indeed very angry people.
And they are totally uneducated about how slave masters used religion to justify beating their ancestors. Gays are facing heterosexual supremacy.
melsucceeded 3 years ago 3
exactly..referring to the bible verse that says "slaves obey your masters". the slaves they took from west africa weren't even christians so why would it matter to them. the bible says alot of things , but they highlighted the part they wanted to use as justification for their actions. thou shalt not kill was left out. they do the same thing with gays today , judge and harass gays like the bible says not to, but highlight leviticus to justify it.
xsnugglebunnix 3 years ago
"the slaves they took from west africa weren't even christians so why would it matter to them."
yeah, a good bit were muslim. what's your point?
tttruck 3 years ago
ok..they were muslims? my point was the slaves taken from west africa weren't christians...so the verse from the bible used to justify their enslavement ..would be a bullshit excuse...because they had no knowledge of the bible ..or at least they didn't follow it's teachings.
xsnugglebunnix 3 years ago
my point was that the muslim faith, the koran, also justifies slavery.
tttruck 3 years ago
and even if it does..were the europeans who enslaved them muslim?..no..they weren't.. so your point is still bullshit.
xsnugglebunnix 3 years ago
My wife posted under my acct, but allow me 2 jump in. You have the weak point. You said "the slaves taken from west africa weren't christians so the verse from the bible used to justify their enslavement would be a bullshit excuse". I think my wife was saying ok, they weren't familiar with the bible, but they were with the koran, which ALSO justifies slavery, thus ignorance of the bible would be irrelevant, hence "what's your point?" Bah. Religion should go the way of slavery: a vestigial shame
tttruck 3 years ago
First of all,Jamaican people are not ignorant. The average Jamaican knows that being gay has nothing to do with pedophilia. If you visited Jamaica instead of taking one person's view of what Jamaicans think then you would know that.
And it is not only Jamaicans that have something against homosexuality,it many people from many countries that feel that homosexuality is wrong
marmackk 3 years ago
Marmackk, just because the majority hold certain beliefs does not make them right. Anyone that thinks something is wrong with gay people or homosexuality is ignorant, because they don't understand sexual orientation. If you understood the meaning of sexual orientation, you would realize that nothing is wrong with gays or homosexuality. The problem is prejudice people, not gays.
melsucceeded 3 years ago
People's beliefs on homosexuality stem from 2main things.
1)Their religion..all major and a lot of non-mainstream religions believe that homosexuality is wrong because that is what their creator tells them.. and they have a right to believe that.
2)A lot of people who are not religious believe that the homosexual act is also wrong...they do not see the act as being natural.
marmackk 3 years ago
Here's my problem: It's when people take their beliefs to justify discriminating against a group of people. That's the only time I have a problem with people. So, if you take your beliefs and say you are going to discriminate against me, that's when I'm gonna go after you full speed. You have people that cite their religion to argue that people should not marry out of their ethnic/race group too. I respect their beliefs too. It's when you people want to equate beliefs into DISCRIMINATION.
melsucceeded 3 years ago
Also, do you understand 'sexual orientation'?
melsucceeded 3 years ago
I believe that a person can be born predisposed to many things, but I also believe a person has a choice as to whether to act on those things or not even though it is hard.
There are many people who are born with homosexual tendencies who believe without being pressured by anyone that it is wrong.
I'm against discrimination ,but most religions while accepting that people may be born gay, still see the act of gay sex as wrong and going against what their creator tells them.
marmackk 3 years ago
I can argue religion with you all day, but it would be pointless to do so. enslaving Africans? If you were told that you were a piece a shit by the dominate group in society, you would start to believe it. Therefore, many gays believe that something is wrong with them. Have you ever heard of self hate? You might be against discrimination, but the dominate people in your group want to use their religion to discriminate. Do you know that people used religion to justify enslaving Africans.
melsucceeded 3 years ago
Gay people love to compare their struggle to the oppression of Black people. They also like to use the fact that people who enslaved Africans used religion to justify what they did .The fact is that slave masters twisted the meaning of the word 'slave' in the Bible, which merely means servant,to quell their guilty consciences because they knew that what they were doing was wrong and their Creator was against it.People against gay sex believe that their creator has explicity said it is wrong.
marmackk 3 years ago
Lol! Lol! Lol! I knew you were going to say that gay people love to compare their struggle. I was going to type that their are differences, but my hands got tired. Listen, you don't have to explain scripture because I can also say that anti-gays are twisting the Bible too. So your interpretation of the Bible might tell you that homosexuality is wrong, but my interpretation tells me that the Bible has gay love stories, Jesus respected gay people, and Jesus saved a gay Ethiopian Eunuch.
melsucceeded 3 years ago
Let us agree to disagree, there are many people who have a very strong view against homosexuality but do not discriminate and are against violence towards gay people.
marmackk 3 years ago
In most cases, it's prejudice because your kind go beyond holding their beliefs; they want to make their personal beliefs into laws, and that's whats going on today. There are also many people who hold a strong view against interracial marriage and women in the clergy. Also, I never saw any 'Christians' speak out against violence towards gay people. By the way, I can defend myself. I'm not worried about the dominate group bringing violence. If they want to, bring it on.
melsucceeded 3 years ago
I am not trying to insult you. But again anyone who disagrees with homosexuals is seen as prejudiced. And as for interracial marriage ,most if not all religions see racism as going against what their creator says is right. Also for the record there are many Christians who even though they do not agree with homosexuality detest violence
against homosexuals.Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean they do not exist.
marmackk 3 years ago
I agree there are some Christians who detest violence against homosexuals. What are people disagreeing about? If you are a real heterosexual person, why does it matter that the next person is not? Maybe you have not studied enough history because many individuals have used religion to justifiy things. I don't care if those people were right or wrong. I'm simply stating that people used religion to justify their prejudices. And there are also Christians who don't have problems with gays.
melsucceeded 3 years ago
I just simply said that people used the Bible to persecute Africans. Regardless, if those people were right or wrong, they used the Bible to persecute African slaves. That's no way comparing gays and blacks. People should not use their religion to justify prejudice, period. Blacks, women, gays, Jews, or whoever. And I personally don't give a damn about you or the next person's interpretation of anything; especially when it relates to defending your personal prejudices in the name of God.
melsucceeded 3 years ago
It's not prejudice..just because you do not agree with something doesn't mean you are prejudiced,it means you believe a certain act as immoral whether that is shaped by religion or a principle.
Where does the bible have gay love stories..could you cite the scripture/s that support that please and yes Jesus loves everyone gay or straight but that doesn't mean that he agrees with everything that everyone does.
marmackk 3 years ago
so exactly what does your belief stem from? what is the divine justification for abolishing homosexuality? It's really not enough to vaguely quote a deity, I could make one up and be just as justified as you... what's YOUR real world justification?
ingaz8 3 years ago
in the caribbean our religious beliefs destroy us. since the beginning of time religion has been the main cause of apartheid and the spark of war. religious people proclaim violence to be bad and preach peace and gentleness...until an "abomination" occurs and they themselves take physical action. even the non-religious haters use religion as an excuse to abuse and murder anyone who doesn't fit into the "correct way of life"..which includes gays.
xsnugglebunnix 3 years ago
This sista is absolutely right! Violence, and repression are derivatives of religious extremism.
When will Jamaica wake up and stand up against repression, homophobia, and violence?

so why not stop acting like you're black? or jamaican? you know why? because that is who you are. it's okay to be gay, just don't act like you are. do you even know how stupid that sounds? homophobia encompasses all fear based reactions to homosexuality, the most extreme being murder. but simply not wanting to meet someone that is gay is also homophobia as it reduces a people to a word. gay. just as a misogynist verbally reduces women to a thing to be owned. wrong is wrong. homophobia is wrong.

CONCLUSION:
I think it would serve gays best if they keep their lifestyles to themselves and not try to impose it on others or flaunt it in any way to provoke anger from the general heterosexual population.
I don't know what it benefits the people who are determined to slander Jamaica's name and spread propaganda about its culture thus creating a negative picture to those interested in visiting and enjoying the general warmth and beauty it has to offer.
samrhule 3 years ago
Oh, get off your high horse. You can't impose homosexuality... That's absurd. Acknowledge that your country is a retrograde, violent place, where people can't be themselves... Only then can change occur.
antidote2010 3 years ago
The big question, is this right? The answer is legally, no. The only illegal thing related to this whole concept is buggery, a criminal act.
samrhule 3 years ago
It is true that there have been attacks on gays from heterosexual Jamaicans, again, reports would reveal that it's mostly a result of provocation by homosexuals and with the island being one that is generally intolerant to this lifestyle, reprisals are usually imminent; in other words if gays decide they want to show off their flamboyancy in the presence of those who absolutely loathe that type of behavior, they might just retaliate in anger.
samrhule 3 years ago
no if jamaicans just think your gay they will try it it does not take much of anytghing but just a sheer thought

Stacey is just (and have been) exaggerating the existence of homophobia in Jamaica. First of all, homophobia is not prevalent in Jamaica.
By definition, homo-phobia = a fear of homosexuality. Jamaicans don't fear it, they abhor it. Jamaicans don't go around hunting gays either. by far, most of the instances that involve violence with gays have usually been proven to start right there in the gay community, amongst themselves.
samrhule 3 years ago

Bruce Golding NEVER changes the law.
dond999 3 years ago
it's one thing to think homosexuality is wrong its another to act in violence because of your feelings towards it.
i just find it unbelievable that Jamaicans(or anybody else) claim they act in violence or they dislike homosexuals because it's in the bible. Murder and Judging, among a handful of other sins happen every single day, anywhere you go, why aren't these things frowned on?

@beloit22 I see your point but what right has mob mentality to decide on man's life just because of his or her sexuality? There's tons of problems in Jamaica like police/government corruption, gang violence, poverty and countless fatherless children etc to be worried about such a triviality of sum1 else business in their own bedroom lol

@blackarawak83 My point Exactly. The Bitch needs to keep the shit in her bedroom ;)

@beloit22 Have no problem with one's sexual orientation/ or preference; should respect everyone, no matter who they are/what they are/ or choose to be..Have a problem though with her her reference to Jamaicans as a violent people..Secondly, to say that the cause of violence is due to sexual repression..And, that pedophiles violate children because they're sexually repressed..Wow!!!..I'm just taken aback, to say the least..Don't want to be rude, but there really is no proper word for STUPID!!!

cannot see that the SAME mindset that condemns them all over the world is very same that is homophobic. because when you study this you find that these always come together in the patriarchy: misogyny, homophobia, racism, hatred of animals, and Nature!!!

Pure ignorance really...The bible says nothing about priests sustaining celibacy it's mans own decision. Where ever there is man... there will be war, violence and trouble. The issue is not religion. Religion is the mask they hide behind. The issue is unfullfilment, poverty and great depression.
