  • Medal of Honor Frontline Soundtrack - Operation Market Garden- That is a great piece orchestrated inspired by this piece here

  • The soloist is fantastic. i hate it when people sing latin, and don't sing it correctly. fabulous!

  • @alt3etf

Why do you claim knowing how latin is pronounced correctly?

Perhaps you do some research. You can e.g. easiliy start with wikipedia: "Latin spelling and pronunciation"

And who knows... perhaps you are hating youself then. :)

But I don't want to be offensive. There are certainly different traditions pronouncing the latin language in different countries.

  • I hope through the knowledge given to us by John Rutter! My ears are too selfish .... Hihi

Quality of such hearing, is not it?

  • It's a shame you couldn't get a young boy, as called for in the score, to sing the solo.

  • @Petronyc well, their hard to find^^, they especially keep away from catholic churches these days :D (had to be done)

  • @Petronyc where in the score does it say it has to be sung by a boy? it just says soprano solo, rutter's version is with female soprano, and the other two versions I have are with women also

  • This was my favorite piece when my high school chorus sang it! I tried out for the solo and was just barely beat for it! I can still sing it though and it's been years! Absolutely beautiful!

  • Beautiful version to this song, thanx to her amazing voice.

  • Does anyone know what the top note in the soprano is?

  • @loudsilence99 It began in the key (or more like mode) of F. But the piece modulated alot. The high note @ 1:46 was an Ab on a Db major harmony.

  • But the high note at the end is a high A back to the key of F. What a genius Rutter is to wait until the end to give the higest note!

  • @loudsilence99 The top note in the soprano is an A.

  • ...if this isn't the highest form of art, it's a photo finish with whatever racehorse you like...i'm pretty much at a loss for words, so i'm gonna repeat what 72510 said 3 months back..."i could not stop listening to this...her voice is the most amazing thing i've heard..." who is this soprano? ...and when will someone make a proper dvd of this ensemble doing this requiem...you (and john rutter) have given us a gift, no a treasure...best wishes to you all

  • I'm dieing to sing the and Lux Aeternam. Anyone out there that believes in the power of possitive energy please send me some my way. I'm starting over and this would be awesome!!!

  • My previous post is in answer to MsKimmy90´s comment.

  • i could not stop listening to this, her voice is the most amazing voice ive ever heard

  • John Rutter is Brilliant!! I have sing this solo several times in a large concert version.

  • The sound is good, too much Vibrato i think...congratulations...it could be better if you really learn how to pronounce the Latin!

  • Don´t be ignorant! Read my comment on this!!

  • The ignorant is you. Although well aware that the Latin can be spoken in many ways depending on the region where you live, there is a standard way to pronounce it, it's like any language: either to speak well or speak with an accent. The Latin is much easier to pronounce when you speak Spanish on the other hand you should accept that we can all have different views.

  • What do you think the standard way would be? The US American way? This would be the way that is almost ridiculously far away from the ancient pronunciation the romans used. Although the Germans aren't perfect as well, they are at least a lot nearer at it.

Go and google "english latin pronunciation"!

Ignorance is claiming to know without knowing anything! And impertinence is to DEMAND them to learn to pronounce latin the way you do.

  • I'm sorry I didn't explain myself. I Think that the better pronunciation or not better but...closer...is the one that people who speaks Spanish do.

  • Ther is NOT a standard way to pronounce Latin!

Please bring me a recording of Caesar Augustus live and we can speak again!!

  • @Eurofrank1

Interesting to have a discussion on a rather dead language and its pronounciation... closest to how (Roman) Latin could've sounded is to listen to Romanian...which in its grammar and vocabulary comes closest to classical Latin

  • thats was beautiful :) i have to play that on the flute.. not so easy..

  • that soloist has beautiful tone. I like the attitude of the choir as well.

  • The tone of her voice so lovely, but why did they choir director not correct any one on their vowels?

  • Every modern language has its specific way of pronouncing Latin; this is "German" Latin. I suppose you´re only familiar with "English" Latin, aren´t you?

  • Es freute mich diese Leistung zu hören. So schön und gefühlvoll. Immer mit Träne, diese Werke!

  • This is a well performed piece of music with a very gifted soloist! The chorale harmonies are just what Mr Rutter would intend. Please come and sing in Australia (Brisbane)...we would love to hear and see you! (Wayne from Australia - Church Organist)

  • Dude...

  • She has a very lovely voice. I hope we hear more from her in the future. I also found the Latin pronunciation a bit "off", because it kind of closed up the vowel sounds, but the sound overall is very very good, and her voice is amazing!

  • LOLL

  • Yeah Pies must mean lots to some hungry people.

  • Pie Jesu, litterally translates to 'Jesus Pie'.

    Ask your baker.

  • Ha ha funny, I always was quite sure that it was taken to mean pure (holy) Jesus. But if Jesus makes you fill hungry, that's right, cause there isn't anything else that will satisfy the soul like Him.

  • Well that explains that jesus-shaped hole in so many peoples life. Round of Jesus Pies required methinks.

  • soloist has done a fine job, high register is clean,

  • The ONLY thing I don't like is the diction. German Latin isn't HORRIBLE, just not as popular. Good job, though.

  • By the way, may I ask who the soloist on this is? She's great.

  • She is studying classical voice at the local academy of music and doesn't want to be named for the moment.

Und übrigens vielen Dank für den netten Kommentar auf Deutsch!

  • She has voice control that's incredible. Can you tell me more about this performance? Where? Was she a local soloist? Does she perform with you regularly?

  • Wow. Absolutely wonderful performance. Thank you for sharing!

  • Nice performance but wrong pronouciation of the words.

  • Americans are well know for their enthnocentrism. They expect everyone to learn English. I've taken French for many years and love to parlez.

My understanding of the pronounciation came from the choir that I was in that performed this piece, and from listening to the CD again and again in which Rutter himself directs the piece. I think when you get used to the singing on the record it is very jarring to hear it a different way.

  • I can fully understand you when you put it like this.

    Greetings to the US

  • Ho ho ho the accents are funny. Didn't anyone show them hw to pronounce the words?

  • Funny that the americans don't complain about the english but the latin parts in this requiem. Must be because of the well known skills of the americans in speaking foreign languages.

@RandiKreger: Perhaps you can be shown how latin is pronounced if you check Wikipedia for 'latin pronunciation'. Things aren't always wrong because you are not used to it.

  • Actually, many Americans speak Spanish since it is useful and real world practice is easy to obtain here. Taking a 7 to 14 hour flight to Europe at great expense is a serious obstacle to Americans experiencing foreign languages and cultures, and one cannot truly master a language without living it. Americans can't just jump on a train and end up in a foreign speaking country a couple hours later for practice. We could go to Quebec, but their French is bastardized anyway from what I have heard!

  • My chorale group here in Los Angeles has done this in the past. Just a lovely song and very well performed by the group and the soloist.

It's charming: I can tell this is a German choir by their pronunciation of "REEquiem"!

    Agani your performance was wonderful.

  • haha, I know, the REE is a dead give away.. but they're awesome, aren't they?

  • Yeah, this is the one of the best versions of this tune I've seen on youtube. Sounds like a neat group to be a part of.

And as an American that knows a little Deutsch, Ich sage:

    Diese Gruppe ist Ausgetzeichnet!

  • I'm no a fan of the strings on this song

  • I wasn't at first, either, I'm far more into the french horn version, but this works, especially for the baroque version they were going for. I've heard the newest edition of this requiem, and they used organ and strings..

  • i love this movement of the requiem. its so beautiful.

  • That was truly amazing.
