I saw this live in HD, and I personally think Anna's voice is perfect for Antonia. The "fire" in her timbre is like the repressed passion felt by the character. I believe this is Anna's very best role!
@MusicVocalism Okay, I didn't know that. While Ruth's voice may be light, it is just as rich and thick with colour as Netrebko's. Netrebko is heavier, that's all. Both have big voices.
@MusicVocalism I never disagreed with you about the role being written for a full lyric soprano. After listening to it again, I like Netrebko's voice on this aria. I do however disagree with you about Swenson's voice not being as rich as Netrebko's. Ruth's voice is just as full and rich, but it's lighter. A light and heavy voice can be equal in richness.
@evolt56 You are right, I am too not excited about this Netrebko-interpretation, I don't like the vibrato, simply too much. Listen to the angel-like interpretation of soprano Roberta Alexander (on youtube), she feels extremely comfortable in this aria.
@Spanglefeather fach is German for "feild" or more specifically what roles you would specialize in (field of expertise). Within the category of soprano the fachs are coloratura, soubrette, dramatic...well, it's a long list.
Absolutely--please post more of the performance audio. It generally sounded pretty good for a first of the series--Calleja managed well despite a lingering cold and his debut appearance in the role from the sound of it on Sirius radio. Antonia seems a good match for AN, especially later in act two than this opening piece.
Love it!

While her voice is gorgeous!! It is too heavy for this aria. Ann Swenson does it beautifully!

Netrebko is usally a good singer but this interpretation just makes no sense. I prefer a more finesse like Annette Dasch in this aria.

@Operaphile - and worse, NO more Susanna!

Lyric roles are much better-suited for her voice than bel canto coloratura. It's like listening to someone totally different.

Miss netrebko is dont a Coloratura!! She(It) is one lyric soprano with a tessitura wide

@Operaphile I totally agree... please... do Puccini or something, or shallow frivolous street trash like Offenbach.
