"Silencer" was Hiram Maxim's trade name for the suppressor he invented. He actually had several patents. The word tends to be used interchangeably with suppressor and moderator.
That's weird. In the US it is perfectly legal to change uppers on a registered machine gun receiver. Of course you need the right bolt carrier in the upper.
It can be. Building your own is a lot like building your own PC. You may or may not save money. But you will end up with the components you want. I wanted a single stage match trigger and, most importantly, a custom barrel / gas block. Apart from the trigger, which is off the shelf too, the whole rifle is built around the barrel with basic, cheap parts.
This is a bench rifle designed to compete with bolt action rifles in accuracy.
Sweet rifle!! Just need to be more organized and distraction free (cats) in order to keep the audience's attention. You seem very knowledgable. BTW, I think that pin is a CAM pin. Keep the videos coming, I learn more and more from folks like yourself....
It was my first attempt at assembling a stripped lower. Now that I've done one, I'm confident enough to do a much better job next time. Well if there is a next time. I've got other hobbies! :-)
I have purchased 1 complete upper, and on a seperate occasion a light 16 kit, the guys there were wonderfull both times, and there products are good. The finish on their uppers is close to that of S&W, but it worked out ok with a stag lower also.
Yeah, no doubt they're good rifles. They charge 500$ more than you could get for a very good DPMS or Bushy. Think of all the upper recievers you could be missing out on. Another company who loves to do that is Sabre: just out of the blue they thought their plane jane A3s were suddenly good enough to charge 1700$ for.
Indeed. I bought my Colt AR-15A2 during the Clinton AWB. It doesn't have the block in it to prevent replacing trigger groups (not that I intend to). But it does have that fucking fat front pin.
My DPMS based parts gun has two premium components. The trigger group is off the shelf Chip McCormick 3.5lb single stage tactical. I like single stage. It also is a direct drop in. No adjustments. Simple.
The barrel is from a Douglas air gauged blank. The rifle does 1/4 MOA when I do my part.
I have no idea why the made that stupid pin. Another a hole who is doing that is HK. They claim its to conform to German export regulations. By the way, have you ever used a pistoned upper in any of 15's? I know they get a little pricy, but who knows, maybe this piston hype is worth it.
I haven't tried a piston upper. Personally I think it is a solution to a non problem. Yes, DI does get carbon fouling into the works. But if anything is going to cause a problem with feeding, it is that long straight case. I bet you that the 7.62x39 chambered ARs are just as reliable as AKs.
The 300 Whisper has a shortened case and is capable of almost the same power level as the AK round. And better for subsonic loads. Since better bullets are available, I would say that wins.
i went to the range with my dad the other day with his new ar and was awesome. i must say that the recoil is something to get used to. it feels weird with the buffer and bolt carrier flying back and forth in the stock.
oh and for the dog name i am thinking of naming my dog deeohgee. not too many people get it though.
have you ever tried to build an ar in another caliber? i was thinking of making an ar in .30-06 using an ar10 bolt carrier and bolt and custom designing a upper and lower. probably going to us bar mags.
I'm working on building a .300-221 upper (AKA .300 Whisper). I should be able to switch calibers in less than 30 seconds. Only problem is the huge backlog on AR parts.
The same guy will be making the barrel for me.
It will be my first wildcat. I've got brass and bullets already. Should have the dies real soon. But until I get the upper parts, there's not much I can do with that :-(
The chrome lining protects the bore for shooting tracers or doing rapid fire at the cost of accuracy. I don't have a chrome lining in this rifle. My Colt does.
ok. thats what i figured but it doesnt matter because we just take it to the range and shoot a few rounds. its not like we are putting hundreds of rounds through each time.

The official name is silencer. Alot of people think that that was made up by someone, but the first silencer was named "silencer"

Is it cheaper to build your own?

Best of luck with it. It's an educational experience that helps you appreciate the design.

Thanks. It turned out pretty well. I just need to get my act together. Better eyes would be nice.

Colt is such a prick. They overcharge on all their guns, then to top it off , they're not MILSPEC. So that eliminates a whole load of resources.
jdfarmerboy2640 2 years ago
um they r milspec so is fn and lmt and so on
bordersoldier 2 years ago
but they are one of the origional manufacturers for the us millitary so even if its not milspec it should still be decent or even good.

Oh, the gas block is also obviously custom.
Everything else is just common parts.
I spent less than what ARs are going for these days. ;-)

I gathered you used a DPMS stripped lower, a Douglas barrel and a Chip McCormick trigger group. who makes the other parts?
jackel44 2 years ago
The barrel was machined by Paladin Machine Services. They also provided the gas block. All the other parts were purchased online at DPMS's website.
The scope I ended up using I got from Optics Planet.

lol cat, does that cat have a name, u refer to ur "cat" as cat the entire time haha

I just call the cat cat. When I had a dog, I called it dog. It keeps things simple because I'm bad with names.

that would be an interesting rifle. good luck with that.
yeah i know about the back log. my dad ordered an upper and the only way to get one any time soon was to get it standard with no chrome lining.
