You have to know Gloria, Erik's mom, on a personal level. For those of you don't know Erik is the 2nd oldest with 5 siblings. jofujenkins summed it up perfectly, sometimes you have to smile to keep from crying. Gloria is a hell of a mom and role model, and that smile she showed when Tom was talking about Erik being taken away in an ambulence is actually a relief that Erik made a full recovery. By the way, Erik will make his MLB debut for the Padres sometime this season.

I had a similar incident happen to me last year, not as severe as this but we were warming up and the guy I was throwing with probably only 30 ft. away just buzzed one as hard as he could and he brings it in the mid 80s so it nailed me in the right eye, blind for a week out of that eye, had to wear an eyepatch, 3 weeks later I was out on the field. I had a slice in the side of my nose too. Had to put ointment in my eye, the eyeball was bruised really bad and I had ruptured blood vessels.

a kid on my baseball team got hit in the jaw by a 78 mph fastball from the pitcher. he was bunting and he didnt have enough time to pull back the bat or his face and got smacked in the jaw. he fractured his jaw in 2 places & had to get it wired shut for 3 weeks after surgery

I play tournament ball and a girl on my team (softball) hit the perfect spot on the bat perfect pit perfect mechanics. And it hit her smack in the face, she was about eleven years old and turned her head and it hit her in the left side. I hope she's better now, and I hope she'll pitch again without fear. Anyways i thought it was similar. :)
