Marilyn Miller was given the name Marilyn as a tribute to two relatives, Mary and Lynn. It was the first known use of the name Marilyn. When Norma Jean Baker met with the promotions people to plot her course, Ben Lyon suggested the name Marilyn because he had been especially fond of Marilyn Miller.

Great Ziegfeld dancer! I believe it was Marilyn Miller who influenced the swirling skirts as she danced and moved on stage.

Thanks for this clip - super! I can see the influence of Jack Donahue partnership with her in Eleanor Powell's dancing - Jack D. taught Ellie to tap. So interesting. Certainly Marilyn's style sticks closer to the clogging tradition, but with innovation, too. Great energy!

I guess her name inspired Norma Jane to hold the fame name of Marilyn Monroe, just a theory. But the Ziegfeld girl was greater.
