Marilyn Miller was given the name Marilyn as a tribute to two relatives, Mary and Lynn. It was the first known use of the name Marilyn. When Norma Jean Baker met with the promotions people to plot her course, Ben Lyon suggested the name Marilyn because he had been especially fond of Marilyn Miller.
Thanks for this clip - super! I can see the influence of Jack Donahue partnership with her in Eleanor Powell's dancing - Jack D. taught Ellie to tap. So interesting. Certainly Marilyn's style sticks closer to the clogging tradition, but with innovation, too. Great energy!
Face lit like a jack o'lantern. Personification of youth, life, energy. The music you hear is by Jerome Kern, as is all the music in Sunny, and Miller's other great hit Sally. Great post, thanks
A real period piece. There are steps that dancers today no longer do or have done in 60 years!

Did Marilyn make up this dance herself or was did she learn it from a choreographer?

Great Ziegfeld dancer! I believe it was Marilyn Miller who influenced the swirling skirts as she danced and moved on stage.

Thanks for posting this, I'd never heard of her! I like how she dances nice and heavy and "into the floor" with her steps.

I guess her name inspired Norma Jane to hold the fame name of Marilyn Monroe, just a theory. But the Ziegfeld girl was greater.
