  • does anyone know if there is an app that gives the droid the voice that is used in this video the one that says "navigate to blue ribbon bakery"

  • @keridog1 i think its just a promo voice for the commercial

  • Verizon has most of the good phones, At&t only has one popular phone iphone and its not even that great anymore

  • The only thing I don't like about this app (and yes, it's free and preloaded) is that the GPS function is a fairly huge battery drain, and my car doesn't have a lighter-socket for a car charger. Otherwise, it has come in very handy.

  • Uh, koolaid, not sure to what you are referring but the Google Maps navigation application is free; it comes loaded on the Droid - you don't pay for a separate app. It has great turn-by-turn, satellite views, etc. It does everything shown in the ad, and it works very well.

  • the commercials make the phone look so futuristic

  • lol they make it look like freaking space craft

  • 0:27

  • iPhone does this...

  • Is is free ?

  • no but the iPhone had this 1st

  • No, it did not. That just shows how fucking stupid you are.

There were PLENTY of phones that came out before iPhone that had GPS, but it was iPhone that made it big.

    Stupid.

  • iPhone made it simple and easy to use

  • Probably.

But it wasn't the FIRST, you made yourself look stupid for saying it. And iPhone may have made it easier to use, but DROID makes it's GPS looks obsolete based off of what it can do compared to iPhones.

  • WRONG

  • Actually, TomTom did a better job of that.

  • Its just as complicated. I used both.

  • And Droid makes it better.

  • Iphone didnt have it first, with this argument I can say that many things Linux/BSD had first that Microsoft is now only implementing to their windows OS. So does this mean anything ? the answer is no, doesnt matter who came first. At the moment, any phone with an Android OS seems to beat the iphone. I have one of the cheapest Android Phones (HTC Tattoo) and it still does so many things the iphone does and doesnt for a much lower price. :) Plus keyboard FTW

  • The iPhone does not have satellite overlay, or street view... On the Droid you can see an actual picture of your destination, face on at the front door of the house you're searching for...

  • great ad!

  • 0:04 KITT

    I MUST HAVE THIS PHONE!

  • Uh, doesn't Google Maps come preloaded on the iPhone as well? I dunno about voice activation or photos, though.

I'm kind of torn. Should I get Droid or iPhone? I'm leaning toward iPhone, but lemme see how much Droid costs.

  • the droid costs the same, but iphone doesn't have free turn by turn navigation so you cant use it in your car, also the iphone uses at&t which has barely any 3G coverage, also the iphone can't customize anything, also the droid can run multiple apps at the same time and the iphone can only run one at a time, and the Droid takes better video, has a better camera, has a keyboard but is still very thin, has a better speaker, has a larger screen, has a higher-res screen so you can see more at once.

  • Not siding with iPhone, just leveling the playing field SLIGHTLY. iPhone can customize, but you have to jailbreak it.

  • I don't think that the 3GS can be jailbroken; I could be wrong, though, since I haven't been keeping up with that. In any case, I don't want to jailbreak an iPhone. Maybe I'd get an iPod touch and jailbreak that, but not an iPhone. Too risky to do on such an expensive investment.

  • Hm, I'm pretty sure the iPhone comes with Google maps which gives turn by turn navigation. I don't think it's as fancy as the Droid's, but I don't really need it to be. Thanks for the other info, though; I'll take it into consideration.

  • it has google maps, which shows you a little dot of where you are. you can't really use it in a car because it's too small and there are no voice directions. on the Droid it's like a real GPS system, as well as the regular maps. Get it?

  • google maps on iphone gives you directions to where you want to go, but it doesnt give you FREE turn by turn directions...you have to pay for a seprate app to do turn by turn directions

  • Google Maps NAVIGATION comes on Droid, not iPhone.

Get Droid. Better phone and better network.

  • @TherapudicCaffeine Droid doesnt even have multi touch. You would think that it would being that its a TOUCH SCREEN phone... lulz

  • iPhone it is, then. If they both cost the same then might as well get the one with multitouch and better support.

  • Droid has multi-touch, and Verizon ranked significantly higher in customer support than AT&T.

  • it does have multitouch. the hardware supports it, it has not been added via software due to fears of legal retaliation from apple, even though they do not own the patent.

  • It's only not in the core apps. You can download apps with multi-touch and use them on Droid just fine.

  • @antiaverage1

and... if you're feeling adventurous you can download the milestone firmware to get multitouch everywhere! result! :D

  • I heard the Milestone firmware on the Droid is still very unstable, unfortunately T_T

  • @antiaverage1

i haven't heard that personally... but the hardware is the same so i don't see the possible issue...

i'm on a milestone at the moment.. it's really good.

  • @dharmok hey is their anyway to reverse that. I'm in canada and il gladly trade you my multi touch for speech to text and functional turn by turn maps. I got 4.0 maps and was giddy only to find out it added buzz only.

  • Actually, Droid does have multi-touch. It's not in the core apps due to market restrictions from Apple, but many of the downloadable apps have multi-touch. The Dolphin browser is one excellent example, with multi-touch pinch-zoom and all the rest. There are many such apps, they just can't be shipped due to current law.

  • droid is beast! im getting mine on friday.\\m//

  • U can get ur iTunes music on the droid, go to the verizon rhapsody thing I think u click on like file ir import or the first thing on the top left and there should be something that says import from iTunes library, it worked for me

  • HERO DOSE!!!

  • Wow...human connect to human.

    Tokio Hotel forever!!!!

  • I'm a linux developer... And I've never been able to understand mac users... ever. Why limit yourself by what a company's think you should do... I don't use a Ipod, I use a $60 8gb phillips mp3 player, I have a laptop that runs the free Zuze OS, not a +$1200 macbook that only great with multi media. Read a couple books and stop using shit that begin with the letter "I" for christ sake... soon all you Ipeople will be using Itoiletpaper next? and the Iphone is not the only smartphone out there.

  • @Tseuq4gninaem the iphone isnt a smartphone in the first place... but it get what you're saying.

  • dude me too man but i think that its just people who like to be sheep and follow the crowd. not only that but i think they like all the "pre made coolness" that comes with apple products.

i dont use any apple products either.

  • @Tseuq4gninaem

i agree, but i mean the iphone and ipod touch look amazing and the apps are even more awesome

  • does it come with the robot arms? If it does not then I'm not impressed.

  • hell yeah it comes with the robot arms!

  • These ads are very cold and technocratic, almost disturbingly so. At least the "Island of Misfit Toys" ad was warm and fuzzy... these ads just remind me of some kind of post-human outland.

  • Now we have corporate commercials on YouTube instead of user-generated content. OK; but why is stuff like this under "science and technology?"

This is technology, yes. It took scientists to make it, yes. But this is just a damn commercial. It doesn't describe any science that makes this toy work.

Science, should be a separate subject-heading from "gadgets."

Commercials should be labeled as such. If they post commercials in the science category they should include some scientific info.

  • You do know who owns YouTube, right? The age where we get information that is anything other than what Corporate shoves into the comatose brains of today's youth are over.

Keep them sedated. Tell them what to think. Ignorance is Knowledge.

  • NICE-

  • ThisizJake

You Are a RETARD... The Iphone is probably the least expensive smart phone on any network! $99 bucks don't get much cheaper than that... now we got the Droid Eris for Verizon which is 99 bucks as well as the Hero for Sprint... so anyone who types please think before you put your fingers to the keys... and if anyone hates AT&T they have probably hat AT&T's service and have their own personal reasons... nobody hates a company for the simple fact of who they are...

  • what actor is providing the voice?? it sounds sooooo familiar but i can't figure it out! ahh!

  • I'm a fan of apple computers, but I have to give it to the droid as my new favorite smart phone. I really like the open source platform.

  • Only thing I DON'T like about Droid is I can't sync with iTunes...

However the turn-by-turn app alone is worth $99 according to TomTom iPhone app...

  • hey, i downloaded this program on my computer called salling media sync that allows for droid syncing with itunes music/playlists. Can't link you on youtube, but just look it up on the not-official droid website

  • Droid is a good phone but be honest, lately just about 80% of smartphones have been a knockoff of the iPhone. Verizon offers good service and it's smart that Verizon is releasing a new line of smartphones for competition.

As far as Apple goes, i've had the iPhone for almost 2 years and i must say it has its few downsides, but every new release Apple does takes a leap over any and all competition. People who complain are people who cant afford the iPhone or people who hate AT&T.

  • It's not an iPhone knock off, nor an iPhone Killer. I'm not looking for an iPhone killer. I want the iPhone to still DO GOOD, but I also want alternatives to a smartphone and the Droid DOES that. I'm so sick and tired of people trying to see that a phone is "trying to be like an iPhone".

  • @thisizJfor one thing i have att and ITS SHITTY i would know, so many dropped calls, and the DROID just looks so SICK....its the best phone right now, even better than the nexus,......oh and my cousin had the iphone and has to charge it so much cause she talks on the phone alot but she only uses the iphone cause of facebook and the fact that its pretty and girly.....seriously who buys a white shiny phone....thats all girly right there but the DROID is black, sleek and stealthy.

  • Stormtroopers are white...bad ass..

The Droid looks like something from the 70's...ugly

    plus its from Verizon..sucks..

The CLIQ will be getting the 2.1...yay!!!

  • this sold me...i have to wait for my contract to be completed on "another"...but this ad is making me consider paying to get out of that contract

  • ok i'm sold i need 35 of them please i think my clients could use them as a Christmas gift...

wonder if it can handle my 100 percent flash websites hmmm...

  • no flash right now but Verizon has stated that early 2010 they will release an Flash program in their OTA update. It has been rumored to be on January 22, 2010. Tethering is also going to be in this update so once those two things are out this phone will be the best!! I have it and love it already!

  • Comment removed

  • anyone know who's voice that is? sounds familiar.

  • Lovin' it!

  • Thats like saying Motorola set the standard for cell phones so all of the other phones are just knock offs...

  • thats BS. thats like saying "sony made the first real mp3 player... so ipods are just knock offs" thats pretty narrow minded. the droid has alot of similaritys to the iphone and alot of improvements.. but in no way is the droid a knock off. plus google is a wayyyy more powerful company than apple.... with higher end software and hardware.

  • Are you kidding? Every touch screen cell phone that has come out between 2007 and now has been a knockoff of the iphone. And yes, the ipod was in part a knockoff of other devices that came before it. Ultimately, practically every piece of technocrap that exists today is a knockoff of something else that came before it.

  • iphone was a knockoff of the lg prada in that case

  • pretty much

  • Yes motherfucker, you are correct!!

  • "In a world that doesn't, droid does."

    Loving the slogan

  • I have that phone and it works like a charm.

  • Fool ! It's an ANDROID phone ! Android and Apple are 2 DIFFERENT OS !!!

  • Ya, but it also has street view google maps, a 3g network that actually works. A media center charging kit, multiple running apps for email, metal detectors, and etc. It has facebook, youtube, and google searches just from my voice... Ya, its just an Iphone that is made out of gold, diamonds, and has a little genius trapped inside.

  • Im going to get this phone, soon (:

  • wow! coolest gps i have ever seen!!
