  • obviously if you drive the prius at top speed it will use more fuel.. it's designed to be driven at 20-50 mph, it uses electrical energy at low speeds

  • so true... I see Prius drivers pushing their cars off the green light so often.... and I don't get it .... why did they buy a Prius? They're supposed to willingly be the slowest off the line ! As for me, I enjoy hearing and feeling my turbo, and I assume the gas prices associated with it, but if I feel economical, I keep it down, and my 1.8T is just a 1.8 ! simple, yet many folks don't understand.. or they get a hybrid for image.. as an entjusiast I'd never get a hybrid but I admire the objectiv

  • 5:53 Golden words

  • if u were affected by the fuel crisis most likely u prob cant by a super car anyways ....

  • @mcgunner121 Duhh. Some people will never get the humor behind Top Gear..

  • What he said at the end should be posted on every car.

  • think my M3 would win:D

  • @MetalicB0x nie porównuj gówna do super samochodu :)

  • Thumbs up if the lady who is sueing Honda because her civic doesnt get enough gas mileage should watch this.

  • I really excpected the Lamborghini to run out first

  • just remember the best way to save on gas is don't use that skinny pedal. I am going to stick with my not so fuel efficient cars because they are just fun.

  • they should have done the whole tank... I just want to see the race

  • m5

  • Where's The Porsche ?

  • This test, much like top gear itself, is complete bullocks. Every car when flat out will consume shit load of fuel. Who buys a M3 and drive it like a nanny? How many M3's give 50mpg? If you want to save fuel, 4cyl is the way to go. If you want power to go with, get a turbo. Case closed. P.S: AC consumes considerable amount of fuel. You lose roughly 2-3mpg, and it adds up fast overtime.

  • @pishabness Umm... yeah, it's called a joke, maybe you've heard of it.

  • @pishabness you should be watching your local news station's car show. We all know that. We don't watch top gear to learn stuff like that. We watch it for fun

  • @NOXXism . So do I, but Jeremy is completely wrong here. Changing your driving style is no substitute for small efficient engines. Fuel prices aren't coming down as we all know it. You can keep your V8's and do 65mph in a 65, or buy 4 bangers and do 65mph in a 65. Just stating the obvious in case you've missed it :)

  • 139 people just drive hybrids!!!!

  • Lamborghini sounded like a rb engine

  • Germany always produce so many good stuffs such as Cars, machines ..... Impressive

  • how much gallon per liter internationally exactly???

  • not avalible :'(

  • i prefer the 1st test :D

  • its kinda amazing that the Prius was just a little bit more thirsty than the M3... but then of course, it wasn't designed to be driven flat out... and probably the driver behind the wheel has a heavier right foot... it(the prius) was running on petrol the whole time... so it won't save you that much money at all... the thing is just don't drive a Prius flat out... but you'd be better off in the M3 obviously...

  • @MultiTopgearfan But then again It would be as slow as heck.

  • some say he was the one who was driving the Ferrari... and he probably was... all we know is he's called ths Stig... the Stig doesn't know what "gentle on the throttle" is...

  • My dad has a Maserati Quattroporte, he's gotten it down to 12.5 liters per 100 km, it really is how you drive the car

  • @Alex it was someone elses.

And the M3 was drafting but I hate the prius!

The Prius is the most hated car

  • @BollocksTube21 Drafting only really works if the car you plan on drafting can hold a steady current behind it, which the prius just cannot do.

I'm not saying it wouldn't have any effect, but I am saying it wouldn't be drastic.

  • Is that Jeremy's Aston because I definitely saw it in a newer episode where all three of them turn up at the track in their own cars.

  • All the taxi's here in Vancouver, BC are Toyota Prius. I think they're genius cars for Taxi companies.

  • anyone else by an r8 after watching this?

  • 139 people just bought Priuses

  • u expect the, to buy an R8!!! O.o

  • or an M3

  • BEAUTIFUL! I FUKIN LOVE THIS!

  • I get 260+ miles per tank in my 93 V8 camaro. I get 350+ miles to the tank in my 95 V6 4X4 Ext Cab Dakota. The Dodge has a 22 gal tank. The Chevy has a 15.5 gal tank. Dodge only needs 87 octane fuel, while the camaro needs 94 octane. Camaro costs $57 to fill. The Dodge costs $74 to fill.

The V8 camaro costs me $.21/mile. The truck costs me $.18/mile. The camaro will get me through just over a week on 1 tank. the Dodge will get me 2 weeks+. 300hp vs 190hp. The Camaro is alot more fun to drive.

  • @CamaroAmx But the Dodge gets through the snow far better, is actualy cheaper to insure and hauls stuff better.

  • @CamaroAmx forget top gear, you should start a show called 'top hillbilly arbitrary gas mileage numbers that no one asked for presented in non-standard form.' it'll be a hit.

  • audi ftw

  • jeremy is right. i used to have this little piece of shit sentra and just to get it going i constantly had to floor it. i think 70 was its max speed but since i got my 9-3, even tho its a 6speed and it has the turbo and twice the hp of the nissan, it accelerates so fast with no effort that i get like 28-30 mpg highway. bring on the saab haters.

  • 4.1 mpg incredible performance.

  • @counkev except like jezza said, building it does more damage, you still are better off buying an M3

  • Well, if you get a Prius and drive economically you can get more MPG because the engine is able to get the most out of it. Where as if you drive as economically with an M3 you won't be able to get max MPG.

  • @counkev ya but if u drive a prius u look like a twat

  • Jeremy should have used his Ford Gt. he would have gotten 5 feet per gallon

  • @21min56secs: If it would start that is :D

  • @21min56secs The Ford GT would get better fuel economy than the Lambo dumbass

  • @mustangmikeca you like taking all jokes up the ass? "oh he meant it literally! i'm going to make a comment online to show that i know about car fuel economy"

  • Want a Prius? Buy a Volkswagon Polo

  • Prius is a dump

  • Comment removed

  • i can squeeze 19 mpg from my 350z :)

  • Meeh...my 98kW, Toyota Carina-e gets 33.3mpg in the city during rushhours...

but on the highway i have gotten 46+ mpg :)

  • 138 treehugging econazis dislike the truth about *economic waste of recources*

  • anybody who owns a prius or would like to get one should be shot in the head then get run over by one or all of the supercars in this video!

  • Sorry for the double posting, I didn't see the reply button.

  • ManOMan0 - How do you know the Prius is no fun? Do you own one? Have you driven one long enough to appreciate it? I think out Prius is one of the funnest cars I have ever owned and I have owned some very fun cars.

  • @lmmara

    watch?v=OM9jhGiIAFM

  • SUCKER.

  • @emilyoshiro Is your post directed at me?

  • We just traded in our '01 Buick Regal on a '11 Prius. We had gotten a best of 31 mpg with the Buick. The best so far with the Prius is 55 mpg.

  • @IBMara but the prius is no fun.

  • its true i have a volvo s80 t6 ....but when i have a little extra cash my foot goes down a bit more cos i can replace it .. but when i get a bit short i my foot is in fuel save mode xD

  • That´s waht I´m talking about. I drive a BMW E30 325i and i can do it (if I want) up to 29 miles/gallon and it still got 175HP and a straight 6 cylinder engine

  • i didnt hear anything they said. i just kept staring at the hot blonde

  • Well yes, you can save loads of fuel (and money) by driving passively, accelerating gently, not revving it up that much and going slower.

But for me, that just kills all the fun. I COULD go at 6L/100km (~40mpg), but in the end I'll gladly pay additional charge for having my fun.

For me it's not about just going from A to B most efficiently.

It's the part between the point of departure and destination that matters to me: the driving.

  • @TehBlackFox amen.

When riding a motorcycle like I do, there is no other way, you've gotta have fun!

  • HHO will help this

  • Don't floor the throttle unless you're accelerating from stand-still or at the highest gear close to top speed, basically.

My driving teacher always wants too high of a gear. XD

  • WHOS WATCHING LINDA CANDY NEXT???

  • Now that was a proper Top Gear Top Tip!!

  • Comment removed

  • Hmm... a Prius being thrashed, an M3 being driven at less than its full capability... how is that a test?

  • anybody who supports hybrids, instantaniously loses the right to call themselves a 'petrol head' 'gear head' or 'piston head'... in fact they on have one '...head' left open to them, and it rhymes with rick.

  • Any new technology will be more inconvenient to produce at first, that doesn't mean we should abandon it to the wind. Of course its hard to make battery powered cars at the moment, but it was hard to make gas cars in the 1900's and people didn't say "oh we should just stick with horses, its actually better for fuel."

  • did you know that there was a studie that if you acelarate hard you get better fuel economy dont believe me? search it up

  • I really love this ,but i personally was expecting the mercedes mclaren to go out 1 st , lol a 599 drinks gas as much as i drink swater in 4 days lol , i really enjoyed this , still love the 599 :D , and the merc mclaren

  • To be fair... The Prius was pushed harder than the BMW, so its going to use more fuel that the BMW.

  • BMW M3 VS The Might Prius :D

  • i got the 2.3 mazda 3 an average 330-400 miles per tank...

  • my prius gets an average of 57.6 mpg

  • @adkrush Then you must drive it well. I have to deal with the prius drivers who think they are racing F1 cars around my truck while I accelerate at a decent and steady rate.

  • i agree with jeremy, if you have a big suv for example, dont floor it at lights, just ease on the gas, and try not to use ac, thats a big factor in fuel economy, as well as weight, try not to load too many people into it

  • @xRAMxDOD Mythbusters found out that using the AC had little to no effect on the gasoline, and thus it was busted.

  • @xRAMxDOD - not using AC doesn't make much sense. 1. It changes the air to get tiring carbon monoxide out. 2. It keeps humidity levels low and humidity is bad for wiring, textiles, etc. I couldn't believe it when I sat in a friend's car, the AC was there - but totally switched off - so the car was clammy and therefore uncomfortable inside! So use your AC, be comfortable, impact on fuel consumption is negligible.

  • Mythbusters did an experiment which proved that aggressive driving uses loads more petrol. By accelerating gently, and maintaining a proper speed you can save at least 30% of the petrol you would otherwise burn.

  • @hartleymartin thank you Cpt. Obvious

  • @hartleymartin But what fun is that? I'd rather burn a hole in my wallet than look like a jackass getting passed by a prius to save a buck!

  • @NutWarrior ow belive me that prius was not going typical slow motion. it was floored. that bmw was rolling like most owners are rolling them.

  • @hartleymartin of course it uses more fuel you fucking idiot

  • @jbolton254 lol, sit down and chill the fuck out. he was probably replying to another comment. but if not, who the hell cares.

  • @hartleymartin thanks for the science lesson, captain obvious.

  • @hartleymartin Well, if you had a supercar and a wide road, most people wouldn't even bother being gentle with the accelerator, but really, supercars weren't made with efficiency in mind. XD

  • Jeremy has it right at the very end!

  • @FYTYTY for once

  • mercedes benz slr mclaren roadster is the best out of here

  • Well, there went four baby polar bears.

  • They should of had the Porsche Carrera GT as well. Or the Mercedes SLS AMG.

  • I may be wrong, but isn't the SLR McLaren a hypercar?

  • @cgaurd52 The term "hypercar" is so loose right now it comes down to pure individualistic definition of the word. There are some people who believe that any car that can get over 200mph is a hypercar... which, I can't agree with because if you buy a BMW M5 and remove the speed limiter (perfectly legal in many areas) it will hit 200+... on the flipside, the mosler mt900 has the looks of a "hypercar" (google it), but won't hit 200+ unless you modify an already maxed out engine... enjoy anyway!

  • @RomeoX911 I perfectly understand now. Thanks for your help!

  • you said prius wrong :P

  • Peel P50... wasn't in this race? :'(

  • you drafted off the Prius the whole time

  • "I've got an Audi R8 right up my trumpet here"

  • Is it just me that feels like the R8 doesn't belong there?

  • That Hertz advert drives me insane! all I want to do is watch topgear!

  • premium gas on the m3 guesing?

  • if you have the money to buy a supercar, you would have enough to fill it up every time.

  • lol i can't believe people actually fall for what top gear tells them...

  • mr needham disliked the video

  • "Change your driving style." I was able to get a stock Honda Civic (not a hybrid, it was a bit before those) to squeeze out 43 miles per (US) gallon. The only thing I changed was how I drove: accelerate gently, don't go above 50MPH, plan trips, etc. Proof that the only adjustment needed was to the nut between the steering wheel and the seat!

  • @junkb0x99 duh. lol every. single. little throttle blip makes a difference

  • @junkb0x99 ummm the bmw and the prius did the exact same thing

  • @junkb0x99 2008 ford focus se, 45 mpg, 60mph

  • @junkb0x99 Coast to stoplights if they are red. Don't floor it.

  • @zfirer That's already on my list. Biggest problem with doing that is constantly getting cut off by the (choice expletives) who REFUSE to slow down before stopping!

  • @junkb0x99 True, but they are the ones losing the fuel, so it's all good.

  • @junkb0x99 I got 52 on the trip back from work with his A3 TDI once. drove up 2 mountains around around 55 MPG without having to stop

  • @junkb0x99 Funnily enough gentle acceleration is not economical. It is better to accelerate swiftly and then use motor for breaking.

The key is saving up kinetic energy.

  • @luuzeri I seriously doubt that. And what difference does it make if you use motor for breaking? it's not like breaks use up fuel and breaking with a motor doesn't exactly refuel the tank either. what are you talking about?

  • @ivoirofl The point of breaking with motor is that modern engines with fuel injection cut off fuel flow when you let off the gas on gear.

Using breaks is usually a waste, as you make the engine run idle.

  • New invention makes driving easier. wwwDOTsidedriverDOTcom

  • prius = BIG FUCKING FAIL AND ANYONE WHO THINKS THEY ARE SAVING THE PLANET WITH THIS AWFUL MACHINE ARE FUCKING RETARDS !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • both races were pure genius!

  • He was drafting on the Prius. Thats help saving fuel xD

  • Comment removed

  • well i mean if the prius was driving smoothly then it would get like 50mpg...

  • @osostewie2 to drive ''smoothly'' you would have to drive less than 20 kph so the battery would be used anything above this this terrible machine would be using the fuel

  • I did 14litres per 100km with a rental 1,2litre Renault Twingo doing 170km/h(max) and I did the same trip with my BMW 525i doing 180km/h with same consumption :D

    That was 3yrs ago about..

  • hybrids are for granola head pussies

  • I think people are getting it all wrong. The Prius is economical yes, but it isn't the most economical car out there, nor did Toyota ever claim that. Obviously, no one in their right minds would WANT a Prius over a BMW, thing is, that doesn't matter. You buy a car that suits your needs and that you can comfortably afford. Forget all the green marketing. Compared to similar family cars, the Prius isn't any slower but is very economical, reliable, safe and big enough for the family.

  • you can drive any V8 at a 'Normal' speed and it wont use much petrol at all, they are so powerful u just have to ooze the petrol through the carby to make her go. But fuck man, U GOT A V8! YOUR GUNA FANG IT

  • No phyices. He was pushing the Toyota and the BMW just had to keep up. Now if u pushed the BMW it's going to drain the tank in 3 laps. Now if u just trailed the Toyota along it's going to use just battery life.

  • guys, if Clarkson put Prius and M3 neck to neck in city I bet that prius would got much much better mpg.

Prius is not designed for track and high speed, it is only designed for city.

Btw. I'm not a prius driver or owner. :)

  • New Prius is 5.5l(1.2 imp. gallon, 1.5 US gallon)/100km (62 miles). Tested on a road from Warsaw to Athens and back in normal driving mode (not eco). In the city it is around 4.5l/100km.

  • Mind you - not only the V8 on the M3 is almost four times more powerful, also an M3 weights around 200kg more. BMW is just a marvel of engineering, how advanced and efficient for it's size and power that engine is.

  • Toyota quality is garbage, all toyota cares about today is profits and it shows.

  • he is actually right :O?

  • Why do British folks always, ALWAYS, mispronounce car names? Its not that big of a deal, but I cringe every time he said "Pry-us"

  • @Tunerdude94 its their dialect.....

  • @Tunerdude94 How do you pronounce it then?

  • @domtar In the United States its pronounced (Pree-us).

  • @Tunerdude94 I think you just hit the nail on the head when you said "In the United States". Just because that is how YOU say it, doesn't mean everyone else in the world is mispronouncing it.

  • @domtar I guess they arent mispronouncing it, but everyone in the US pronounces it that way.

  • M3 cool !

  • Jeremy is a fucking genious

  • lol but the prius doesnt use fuel when ur not on the gas pedal

its uses electric thats y its economical

  • @Zer0xSniPinG Yes and ofcourse you usually drive with your foot off the gas pedal. Uber-economical.

  • @Zer0xSniPinG And by the way, all modern cars use 0 (zero, nada, null) fuel when the foot is not on the gas pedal but the car is in gear (e.g.: going down a mountain road).

  • as my dad always said to me: Its better to drive an overpowered vehicle easy then drive an underpowered can hard. a big V8 will work less pulling a vehicle then a small V4 will pulling the same vehicle. If your driving a high HP car, the engine is working less to do the same job as a smaller engine and will normaly last longer due to less stress on the engine. the prius' engine was working harder then the BMW's engine and therefore used more fuel. its quite simple really.

  • i am the 705,000 viewer!!! thumbs up

  • audi & bnw drivers are cocks !

  • You put one gallon of fuel in a car, it won't even smell it.

  • Work (energy) = mass (weight) * distance

It doesent matter what engine you have under the hood. You still gonna need to use the same amount of energy, either with a 1.2L or a 3L Turbocharged.

A 1500 kg car with 1.6 L engine will have the about same fuel consumption as a 1500 kg car with a 3 L engine. (Not taken aerodynamics in consideration)

The 3L engine just have the advantage of going 0 to 100 km/t at a shorter time, which increases fuel consumption.

  • @Greddi

Incorrect. It's about efficiency. Not only aerodynamics are important, so is the efficiency of the engine itself. The more horsepower you need, the less efficient they will be produces. The same goes for the spectrum of the car's horsepower. If you use 100% of its potential, it will perform extremely poor on consumption.

The prius is a rather large car using 5L/100km. Yes, its not as good as they intended it to be, but its a lot better than anything of the same weight on petrol.

  • @Qternocq

You just missed my point. A 3L engine doesent need to produce 250 kW at all time, you can just be easy with your foot on the pedal, and just use 10% of its potential. and let the engine produce 25kW, it will go slower, but it will take you there. Which mr Clarkson just proved with the M3 and Prius.

And ofc aerodynamics are important, its part of the sum of Forces. I just havent taken that example into consideration yet. Just thinking that both of those cars have same aerodynamics.

  • @Greddi

I didn't miss your point, your point was incorrect. An engine capable of producing 500 bhp is just not as efficient as an engine built for efficiency, because it's built for another purpose. If you're going to apply that purpose, speed, onto a car that isn't built for it you're just bending around the numbers. Clarkson didn't prove anything that wasn't completely obvious: racecars at 10% use less energy than economic cars at 100%

  • AUDI! VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK!

    YESSSS!!!!!

  • Co za porównanie. Polo i prius , haha

  • "It's not what you drive, it's how you drive it"? Normally I like Jeremy's pragmatism, but here he's a bit off the money. You could drive a Golf at motorway speed and a Lamborghini at motorway speed, and due to the huge engine on the Lambo, it's going to chew through more fuel. Besides, if I had to choose between an ever-growing fuel bill or proceeding along a road with less fanfare, I'd take the latter.

  • The Audi kinda looks outta place there ..

  • Nissan GT-R should of been in this....

  • Its the car AND the driving style. If you drive always fast buy an M3, you will save fuel. If you want drive slower than an prius is the better choice.
