One of the things most dont remember and is never talked about. Hitler not only caused all that death and horror he perverted one of the most respected fighting forces known. Forced out those who werent Nazies and tarnished a great force.
Of course in many respects he still couldn't completely destroy the Honor of the german military and in particular the german navy. When you have to build a army of troops to do horrible deeds because the others refuse there is hope still for the fallen.
Also komm klar.
It is only fair to mention that by decree of the German government, every member of the Emden crew was allowed to hyphenate his name and add -Emden to it.
The adventures of the landing corps of the Emden is also remarkable and can be seen on youtube under DIE KARAWANNE DER MATROSEN. The caravan of the sailors.
It is worth remembering that SMS Emden was an inanimate object. Any ship is just a wood/metal structure. The fame of SMS Emden was a direct result of the skill, competence, and gallantry of Captain von Muller.
yes its the only surface ship to ever get iron cross. also all members of the crew had "-EMDEN" added to their last name. how kool would that be.. to have -emden added to your last name and know that you were a descendent of the crew of the most famous commerce raider of all time
I read that Captain von Muller died BEFORE that honor was bestowed. That was really sad- if ANYBODY deserved an honor like that it was CERTAINLY von Muller-!
Also noteworthy- EVERY officer that served on the SMS Emden was awarded the Iron Cross First Class, and 50 enlisted men were given the Iron Cross Second Class. Captain von Muller himself was later presented with the Pour le Merit. The Emden was a truly remarkable ship...
In Madras (now renamed Chennai), "Emden" entered local folklore. I used to go there regularly for work and one day the story of Emden came up in conversation. My local friends were surprised to hear that story - they told me that Emden had become a demon name to scare children - "if you don't behave, Emden will get you". The actual story, however, was known only to history buffs. Thus do legends start...
Again, Willem - some (if not most) of your material is under copyright - be more cautious with what you suck from other websites or from actual books...
A wonderful tribute to a fine ship. The bravery, skill and humanity of the German sailor was never more evident than in the Captain and crew of this amazing vessel.
I have build this ship at 1/350 scale from REVEL. I think it has a sister too, Dresden. Beautiful ships, a true classic Georgian Era warship. Great video willem!

Who would have thought that such a small ship could reap such havoc.
The old coal burning ships of the WW1 era are great to look at.
Cheers

Und dann noch NEAR MY GOD TO THEE? Ist doch nicht die Titanic.
Kommt mal klar hier.
