I've got a Taylor 410ce and a Larivee OMV-03R. Both are great guitars but I personally think the Taylor has better balance from treb to bass. Ovangkol is a beautifully balanced tonewood. I also prefer the Taylor neck for action and comfort. The Larri has that beautiful rosewood warmth and the quality is top shelf.
This may be the dumbest comparison ever!!! If you had not pointed out in your own words that the settings on the Larrivee recording were bogus, and then went on to add a disclaimer at the end, we would have walked away duped into thinking that Taylor was the better of the two instruments. But now we simply wonder why you bothered to post this at all.
Taylor Hands down! Taylor has really worked out every bug, every kink, every issue and found a way to make EVERY guitar they make on the money scale put the best sound out. Yes there are some really awesome other brands out there. But for my money. I can pick up ANY Taylor and always count on hitting the sounds I want everytime! Maybe I am Bias to because I live in San Diego!
If you're going to do a comparison of two multi thousand dollar guitars, why not clean up your act and present it the right way? Sorry but this is half-ass work.
Come on, First, thanks for the video but all you guys saying this is better than that, seriously? For What? What sound do YOU want? What strings are on each guitar, how old are they, have both guitars been normallized for at least a week in the same humidity? It's all a matter of personal choice.
I have been looking at the Taylor 414ce and I have to say I hate the sound when you slide your fingers down the strings maybe I need to look at a different guitar I don't know great review
Plus it also depends on the tone and sound you're looking for. If you want modern, go with taylor. If you want more of a vintage sound, go with Larrivee.
If there are different brand strings on these guitars, than both of them will have different tone effects. Usually Larrivee comes with Cleartone strings, and they are stiff and dont resonate that well. If you put JPs on them or any other high quality strings, the Larrivee sounds great too.
And there is no "this is better" when it comes to solid wood acoustics. It comes down to individual preference.
And I own a Taylor GS5 and a Larrivee L-09. They both sound great.
@john814ce I bought a Taylor 414ce and let me tell you it was a tough decision between the Taylor and the Larrivee. I ended up with the Taylor only because of the expression system and sleek controls. I know I would have been just as happy with the Larrivee. Very nice looking and sounding guitars....with that being said...the Taylor won. Great guitar and very happy with it!
Must be true coming from Joe Schmoe! Music is subjective and the sound of an instrument is a personal preference. That does not mean either instrument is better than the other. But way to be mature! And was the cursing necessary to make your point of this biased video?
"Larivee normally doesnt sound that muddy and dull, I screwed up the recording and only had one mic on it pointing at the end of the body so thats why you don't get the highs."
hey man .. great video, what strings are you using on the taylor, I got the same model but doesn't sound quite as good, never recorded stereo thought, which utleast in this video, makes a big difference
I don't think you screwed up and dont have a good fair comparison. Generally any Larrivee sounds better than your recording. The Taylor sounds brighter and more volume and I suspect it's your recording and not the true sound of the instruments.
I just bought a Taylor 414ce today from Oklahoma Vintage Guitar and I absolutely love it!! For the money, it's one of the best guitars that you can buy.
This guy doesn't sing at all so he's better off with the Larrivee. It's got more soul, more personality. If he was a singer he'd do well with the Taylor, it's bright and plain, doesn't get in the way of vocals.
Im thinking about buying a second hand 2007 424ce Spring limited edition with a koa top. Anyone got experience or info about this guitar?
Also i'm a bit worried that the grand auditorium is too big to play comfortably on. Or is this only the case when you have short arms? Mine are quite long but still i worry that the guitar will be too big for me.
@AJGuptill ? Thanks for the quick responses. I actually have a Larrivee L-03RE and I've been satisfied with it for the past two years that I've had it. Lately though, I've been thinking about getting a different brand and I'm leaning towards a Taylor. The 414ce seems to be a good one, but I'm really interested in their GA acoustic series, like the GA5. How's the playability of Taylor compared to the Larrivee? Did you try that LV-09 on the video?
@riahaidan I think at that time I had just some light d'dariio's on it, but I've been using the wound Elixir's that come on it from the factory, They seem to last well and sound good, they're twice the price almost though.
Hello, thanks for the recording. Between the two guitars, which one do you like better. It sounds like the Larrivee is somewhat muddy, you can't really hear the mids and the highs. The 414ce seems to stand out better. Does anyone agree?
@riahaidan On paper, the Larivee is better I guess. and it's more expensive. I think their between $3000 and $4000 and the Taylor is $2500ish CAD (I only paid $1600 brand new from Oklahoma Vintage guitars) I like the brighter sound of the Taylor, (the Taylor is mine so I'm a little bias as well, haha) but the Larivee normally doesnt sound that muddy and dull, I screwed up the recording and only had one mic on it pointing at the end of the body so thats why you don't get the highs.
Im glad YOU had a good experience with Oklahoma Vintage Guitars. I received a piece of shit! Fret board had come unglued, inlay was completely rubbish. Gouges in the fretboard, glue all over the inlay work. Aweful
I have owned a 214E Taylor and I gave it to my nephew. I bought a Larrivee LV-09. I going back to a Taylor 414CE. The Taylor sounds much better all around.
@riahaidan Agreed. Larivee is muddy as hell compared to the Taylor. Would love to see them thrown up against a similar priced Gibson though.. J45? Different body style, I know, but...
@riahaidan Yes, but that's ot a typically Larrivee. I think its something with the recording that makes the Taylor sound 'chimey'. The Larrivee has much more character - I wish we could hear it properly. Put them both against a Lowden in the next test.
can anyone tell me what model my larrivee is? My larrivee is exactly the same as this guys in the video except mine has vine inlays all up the fretboard. and is series 19.. rather than Lv-09 its says 19 series.. and the guitar sticker also says california special edition....
but i looked all over the internet and I cant find the same guitar anywhere... ive typed in california special edition but that has a pinetree on teh headstock. my headstock is plain... but vine inlays on the fretboard.
The microphone is the only thing that is picking up sound. The camera microphone is turned off completely. It's definitely better sound quality that just recording with the regular built-in camera microphone.
@AJGuptill Ohh thnks, so is that why People have mics, not to sing into to make it louder, but to replace the camera sound quality with the mic? Thanks

@AJGuptill im sorry to bother you agian, but i can only find the mic, do you buy the stand for extra, and what is the xy stereo is it like an amp for the mic?
@CarsonsGuitarLesson The set-up is: Two mxl microphones in an XY stereo formation. Basically the microphones point at oposite ends of the guitar in a 90 degree position from each other. The mics kind of make an X. I then have those two mics going into the XLR inputs of my video camera and that's it.
@CarsonsGuitarLesson Also the distance from the microphones to the guitar body is the length of the guitar body. Basically you measure the distance from the two guitar strap holder screws and you put the miocrophones that far away from the guitar. I g2g but if theres anything else you need to know let me know.
@CarsonsGuitarLesson Once again, they are just going straight into the Panasonic HMC150 video camera. It has XLR inputs and phantom power to power to power the mics.
@flinginferrets - Thanks, That's exactly why I posted this, because I couldn't find a single video that did the guitar justice when I was shopping for a guitar. And even on mine I screwed up the mic-ing half way through, Oh, well at least I got a couple decent takes.
@kpjian - Hey, thanks for the comment, it's just the regular model. I bought it from Oklahoma guitar on ebay. The guy there was super nice to work with. I paid $1600 brand new. A lot of his guitars are brand new but he's not allowed to advertise them as new.
I'm just trying to figure out which to buy: a Larrivee and a Taylor; and I came across your video. If you don't mind sharing, which guitar do you prefer? Thanks.
@xenobaka I will give you a review on mine, Taylor has grea action sound and great for every thing (Blues fingerstyle even a bit of classic!) i love taylor
