If its any conselation, ligers are sterile. They cannot have offspring. But the reason they do not exist in nature is because their natural habitats are too far away. Lions are indigeous to Africa while tigers are indegious to eastern Asia.

My friend Bid Ed had a liger named Tigger that weighed close to 1200 pounds. They don't happen in nature because lions and tigers are from two different continents but they are bred in captivity. I highly doubt that there are only two other ligers in the world.

The fact of the matter is, a liger would never occur in nature because tigers are native to Asia & lions are native to Africa. The only reason ligers exist now is because man forces these animals into enclosures and the animals subsequently mate. It's the same thing for white tigers, only one wild white tiger has ever been found. Nowadays, man intervenes again and forces related animals (i.e., mother to son, brother to sister or father to daughter) to breed, therefore creating white tigers.

@PekyIndigoFirefly - Probably not. You cannot make a lion and a tiger breed. They have to choose to breed, and not all will. Not all pairings will produce ligers. And contrary to other information on the web, ligers are not produced by artificial insemination. That technique does not work well on cats in general (they are induced ovulators). It is reserved for very rare or valuable cats after all else has failed.

Ligers are amazing cats-- I have had the privilege of working with two of them. Most of the information on the Internet about ligers is wrong, and is being spread by folks who don't like other folks having animals. Ligers are bred naturally (often accidentally), born naturally, tend to be healthier than most cats on average, and live normal lifespans. They also have great personalities, an love to be around people. There are about 150 ligers worldwide at any given time.

@Kaaotikock - For most hybrid animals, one sex is not usually fertile. In the case of ligers, its the male. Some people tell me 3 percent are fertile, others say none. The male liger we had frequently mated with a tiger, but in nine years produced no cubs. OTOH, about 1 in 3 female ligers are said to be fertile. We are not planning to find out of our current liger (a female) is in fact fertile. If anyone did succeed in getting ligers to breed, I bet the cubs would be really amazing.

The fact of the matter is, a liger would never occur in nature because tigers are native to Asia & lions are native to Africa. The only reason ligers exist now is because man forces these animals into enclosures and the animals subsequently mate. It's the same thing for white tigers, only one wild white tiger has ever been found. Nowadays, man intervenes again and forces related animals (i.e., mother to son, brother to sister or father to daughter) to breed, therefore creating white tigers.
