my god bartok is brilliant. i wish i could write like him. despite the fact that the entire piece is atonal, it is beautiful. by taking folk songs and writing them in modern style, he has connected the past with the presence. go bartok!
I love the parts when all of the different melodic lines are weaving together. Also the tight, angular rhythms. And the cool percussive effects. Ahh Bartok you are so good.
if anyones a teacher of world history, make sure you add this music to any study of pre-WW2 Europe. you must capture the mood of of the time!=fear, discontent, social turmoil, etc.
all sonflict is inner conflict. this is my favorite movement of this song because the war type bass. the bass line reminds me of mars from the planets. overall a great peice; regardless of dissonance.
I imagine this movement played at a concert. Whoa! It will be the first classical concert in history with head bang and the violinists jumping on the crowd.
Let's compare this stunning and awesome piece with King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic part II: this progressive piece depends heavily on Bartók's quartet.
I find myself wishing this was longer. I love Bartok's tunes and rhythms and find myself always wanting to hear them again and again. Endlessly rewarding music.
I like this painting, and I love this music, but the two do not match up. Yes, the music is dissonant, and there is tension there, but not the fragmentation and desperation found in Picasso's Weeping Woman. When Bartok uses folksong, he does it to affirm life and humanity. Interesting lesson on how visual images can (mis?)-interpret music for us.
Your intepretation is definitely an interesting perspective, but I personally thought they were an excellent match and they evoke very congruous emotions for me.
@scaryfried Oi, oi, oi, watch it adolescent creep. Though your command of english and your expressive power are impressive --especially your curious suggestion that a male homosexual is also female genitalia-- nobody wants to read the bizarre overreactions of a pubescent vessel of erupting hormones. Keep things in check.

aSome people want young white females to mix with non-white males.
I made a one-minute video highlighting a very tiny sample of race-mixing advertisements.
I love white people, and I am opposed to race-mixing. But I do not hate non-whites.

This piece truly makes me realize that Bartok's use of dissonance was meant to be exciting, not creepy or intellectual. He wanted to make us dance!
