Awesome shirts! Quick question, on the final shirts image you have at 5:29, what shirt spinning/tying up techniques did you use for 1.) the shirt on the far left, and 2.) the one in the middle (back of the couch)?
I want to do this to a black shirt, but instead of it looking brown I want it to be a vivid blue, i don't think i can do that because it'll be brown underneath :^/
The bleech should start the effect almost instantly. I had some grey shirts that had the same issue They never did work - so perhaps it is the material(?). I think a 100% cotton shirt works best for this. But really, only ten or so minutes and you should for sure see results. Maybe try the straight bleech...
You could do this with jeans for sure... but wrapping is tougher.
If you get on FaceBook, ask that question on Addicted To Tie Dying - someone may have tried jeans and will have some pointers. Jeans are tougher but can be done.
Yes, it is difficult to get a pure white (maybe impossible).
Some on Addicted To Tie Dying had talk of a different chemical for bleeching, but that post is months old - you would have to search for it in the discussions (FaceBook).
@ WolfEchoes Yes we used 100% bleach and orrrrrange is what came out of it...LOL They will be good for Halloween though LOL Is there an other color that would have more of the bleach out to be able to redye?
A friend and I tried to do the reverse tie dye and used 100% cotton black T-shirts but the bleached areas just turned orange only. We followed your ideo to the letter.. so any idea what we can do or what brand of t-shirts we can use? We used Fruit of the loom.
@WolfEchoes thanks for the advice! deffo gnna try it out:) but when i wash it out, do i put it in the washing machine with all of my other clothing or will that affect my clothes?
WOW! This is really cool! I have a black dress that I wanted to make more interesting by doing some bleaching but I didn't know how. Now I know and I see it can come out Great! Thank you.
@Dnni9293 thats whats happening to me right now ! im trying to bleach part of my tutu for a school thing and my tutu will not lose any colour. im wondering if its because the fabric its made of.
Fold in half, spin a bit above middle on the fold side...
Dye only part of the middle fold (along the actual fold) to highlight the spider portion...
5.42 is a CIRCLE fold.
It is a bit harder to explain, watch the vid for that one.
But all of these bleach outs are just dye folds, with dye being taken away instead of added... anything should work, and some may be better as a reverse dye than a color dye...
dude... king of tie dye! you do amazing work and i would like to thank you for posting this on youtube and more importantly posting it on youtube and not asking me to buy a DVD for 45 bucks to see more.
I waited a bit - but only because I was waiting to see the result - which was a bit slow. So I guess I let it sit 15 or so minutes and then went for the stronger.
I did this with a green shirt. It didnt get as light as I needed it to. Tried 50/50, 75/25 and 100%. I am trying to dye over it now with blue and purple. Any ideas??
I tried this with a green shirt. It didn't work as well as I wanted to. I ended up tie dying over it with navy blue and purple. Hope it ends up ok. Tried 50/50, 75/25, and 100% did I do something wrong??
@WolfEchoes i can see that when people spin the shirts for die that they are damp, do u wet the black shirts to. if so do u leave it damp or let dry before bleach or before u die a white one for that matter should the cotton damp or dry
It breaks an electrical bond in the material and allows the dye or bleach to just soak right through easily. (Spin dry in the wash machine is the dampness I use).
Great video! I tried my first attempt at this process and followed your directions. I used a 50% solution, let set for 45 min. and used a 80% solution, let set for 20 min. The 80% solution ate holes in my shirts so need to adjust time there. My end goal is to color dye these and want my colors to "pop" so was wanting a "whiter" fabric than what the 50% solution gave. Any suggestions on getting a whiter result say with a 75% solution but at what time to let set? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Hi, We tried the spider thats in the middle at the end of the video and it came out Great can you post another video where you show how to do the spins for the other shirts besides the spider ?
I've done the reverse bleaching with templates for my youth groups. Take your choice of picture or insignia and cut out on cardboard then in a spray bottle blace the 50/50 mix and spray over the insignia. Also the protect the fabric there is fabric safe bleach.
I'm assuming that after you rinse out the bleach and get the "discharge" result, you then wash the garment and retie in the same pattern to add your color dyes? Is it just as easy to tie dye with color dyes on white shirts and use black dye to get close to the same result?
This is really cool. I want to try this on a navy blue cotton dress I have, I'd like to do the oval, but I'd like their to be more than one oval, would I just roll on two ends of the dress? I'd also like the bleach color to come out more white than orange or pink, if I use just bleach will that help. And finally do you machine wash after dying or sink, and how long do you wait to wash after dying?
If you fold the dress in half, and center the oval folding over the halves - it should become two when you unfold the dress. (Hope you know what I mean). The dress will likely be bigger, so you should be able to fold it in half - treat that half folded dress like a normal unfolded shirt and start the process (folding for the oval).
Pure bleach may help - but don't let it damage your dress. It is powerful stuff.
Gonna do this to some tie dye shirts that didn't turn out to well, I hope it works

Looks like far left is just a spiral, so it was spun in the middle.
The other is a spider... so it is folded in half, and spun on the fold like a spiral.

gabbyxx666 5 months ago 2
@gabbyxx666
That is just a spider...
Fold the shirt in half down the middle, spin like a spiral on the fold itself, tie up and dye.
The middle area will be clossest to the center of the shirt...
It can look like a spider if you apply the dye right - or bleech. It is cool either way...

can you use a black dye?
beatlesfan132 2 years ago
Do you mean black onto a white shirt?
Yes, but black is not always full black, or deep in intensity.
This "reverse" idea is a different effect and a different look from a tie dye...
The adding of dye after the bleaching adds another dimension.
WolfEchoes 2 years ago
I've done the reverse bleaching with templates for my youth groups. Take your choice of picture or insignia and cut out on cardboard then in a spray bottle blace the 50/50 mix and spray over the insignia. Also the protect the fabric there is fabric safe bleach.

I'm assuming that after you rinse out the bleach and get the "discharge" result, you then wash the garment and retie in the same pattern to add your color dyes? Is it just as easy to tie dye with color dyes on white shirts and use black dye to get close to the same result?
joezgurl 2 years ago
Yes, wash and then prep like a normal dye.
I tried mto follow the same pattern on the one example, but you could also combine patterns.
Black is hard to get. Sometimes it is dark grey, or dark blue, or deep purple - not quite black.
This is a very different effect... kind of unique.
WolfEchoes 2 years ago
how do i get rid of the smell
jeffreyphunmongkol 2 years ago
The bleach smell should go away after a wash (maybe it will take two for a thicker material).
WolfEchoes 2 years ago
This is really cool. I want to try this on a navy blue cotton dress I have, I'd like to do the oval, but I'd like their to be more than one oval, would I just roll on two ends of the dress? I'd also like the bleach color to come out more white than orange or pink, if I use just bleach will that help. And finally do you machine wash after dying or sink, and how long do you wait to wash after dying?
pickel13828 2 years ago
OK, hopefully it will work on the dress...
I rinse in sink - then machine.
WolfEchoes 2 years ago
I let the dyed material sit for what the directions say - depending on the dye...
