As a Native American it is refreshing to see people respecting the animals of the earth. We are each tied to animals, and in many ways interdependant on each other. The ability to interact with the earths creatures is life liifting.

What ever the reason is I have interacted with dogs that the owner has said did not like people and the dog had no issues with me and became friendly to the amazement of the owner. Animals do sense your fear and react to this fear.

Seals and sea lions are very smart mamals. As with any animal they sense fear of when to flight. Sometimes the fear comes from memories passed down to babies that this thing = dangerous. In general from what I have been told is that the bull can and will become agressive if he feels his mates being threatned or his status is being challenged.

OMG this is so NOT a good idea.. I keep waiting for the seal to take a bite of this woman, not to mention the super scary bacteria that naturally occurs in their mouths.. Take it from me I trained a 800 pound sealion to do tricks at my work for many years almost 10.. and then one day another sea lion came along who seemed very friendly his name was russell... Then he bit my finger nearly clean off for no apparent reason.. Probably thought I had food. Wild animal are unpredictable. That's all.

@juniperguinevere The only real reason I would say this could be a bad idea is that now the seal's natural caution toward humans has been reduced. And what if the next person to come to the beach isn't interested in meeting the seal, but killing it or some of the other seals.

Otherwise, yes, we SHOULD deal directly with nature more often. Life is full or reasons for fear. Let's start remembering the reasons for joy.

I think the seal leaning its head back as far as it does to display trust. It's very vulnerable in doing that. Yeah, I'm a little mixed about the video though; the potential danger for her, introducing pathogens to the animals, creating trust in humans...

But all the same, it is sweet to see affection. I suppose she didn't pet it because she was instructed to avoid touching it? I'm sure she wanted to.

But let's not all go out and do this sort of thing. We'd ruin the last nature we have.

Over 30,000 tourists experience Antarctica each year. We have strict policies which include staying 3 meters away from the wildlife. However, if they approach you we're to stay very still and let them move on. An encounter such as this one that, while it's precious and life altering, can actually bring harm to an entire population of elephant seals. Who knows what kind of bacteria we're introducing to these remote and until recently pristine environments. We scrub our boots in disinfectant, etc
