Thanks Kip, This book says so much about the trouble/blessing that us hapa have growing up. We're not "enough" of either to be truely one or the other. And yet, there are so many of us, we all have each other!
Firstly, they are natural arrivers to America (CONTINENTAL EUROPEANS and ASIANS possessed ocean-faring technology to reach America way earlier than mid-19th century).
Secondly, their forefathers could not have been slavemasters in America cos no CONTINENTAL EUROPEAN country or ASIAN country had taken slaves out of Africa in 16th or 17th century. Clean and great for a start in America!
I'm originally from Philippines; moved in the U.S. when I was 14. I've been told quite alot that I don't look like the majority of the people there and I know I must be mixed of something and I don't know what.. should I consider myself happa?
well i too am filipino and iKNOW that i have european background (spain) although i look "diferent" or mestizo looking i still say i am filipino becase i was BORN and raised there.. basicaly its all in the mind again...
@KennLA368 Technically, Filipinos are usually a mix of Malaysian or Indonesian and Spanish. However, if you are unaware of anything specific in your bloodline other than Filipino, I would just call you Filipino, not a hapa. Americanized Asians tend to develop more Western facial features over time it seems (perhaps due to diet and different facial expressions... I don't really know), so a lot of Americans that have 100% Asian heritage don't look exactly like people from their respective races.
So-called 'hapas' have been in existence in Jamaica for like EVER by now, just like the full blooded Asians who have been living out there for quite a while. I mean half-black/half Asian and half white/half Asian.
I've always been fascinated by Hapas. I wished I was one! Anyways I have my own 6 month old British/Filipino Hapa now and shhhh...she's sleeping... :)
i'm incan/spaniard/asian and hapas are the most interesting and exotically beautiful people in the world, definitely great mixes (i dont think black and asian are hapas because they look plain black). must get book!
so im not a happa because im half black funny enough most ppl say im asian as soon as they see me... and i consider myself exotic an beautiful thank you lol
Interesting, I saw this half-black baby girl with her Asian mother in Long Beach, CA. She doesn't look plain black. I could recognize her blackness, but she doesn't look entirely black. I should have taken a photo. I wanted to, but I thought it was really rude.
