I did not realise when I posted this video that it would elicit as many responses about the technicalities of belting verses non belting. My only reason for posting was that I thought that it was a really good performance by two young actors. Actually, I thought the whole show was really well done. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss!
I love all the comments...nice debate. I am the director of this show. All of the students are 17 & 18 years old. Jimmy is an operatically trained singer, but I think he did really well with the musical theatre style. He is not a high tenor, so we felt it best that he did not belt "the way you make me feel". Gavin Creel is fantastic, but remember, he is a full grown man. His voiced has completely changed. Thanks for watching the video!
peerah, What would make you think that a musical line is "supposed to be belted out." Have you ever read the vocal score from a show? Such instructions ARE NOT given.
FYI, Gavin Creel did not belt that line in the Original Cast. The point, however, is that even had he done so, that would not mean that the line is "supposed" to be sung that way.
No offense, but if you are an actor or actress, you will need to interpret the music yourself, not just mimic the person who you first heard sing it.
Well. Gavin Creel DID belt that line in the OBC recording. Please take a look at Seth Rudetsky's video. That's a really smooth belt. And yes I have read some vocal scores before. There ARE such instructions.
Well my interpretation of the line is that he is expressing his true love and is unable to contain the joy. Everything in the song is building the emotion up to that line. And suddenly it drops cause he goes into falsetto.
Try to imagine Defying Gravity's with no belting! Same feeling!
No offense but neither of you know the voice well enough to talk about belting, because in reality it is really hard on your voice and can cause damage. Therefore smart singers will not belt so they can save their voice. You don't need to belt to interpret correctly, in fact Broadway singers are getting more and more mediocre, they make it due to their expression and movement interpretation
heya sorry to probably annoy but I'm a belting alto/soprano right and you can belt just as fine as long as your throat is retracted and if the famous musical people are like amazing at singing then they should be able to retract at the click of a fingers and belt a healthly line but that line was defo to high to belt, there's a fine line between belting and anchoring and he would need to anchor to get that out. and as long as they do clavical breathing.
its not about whether it should or shouldnt be belted. it all about opinion. in my opinion they way that performer sang the G#'s of the way you make me feel was not good enough. i am more than willing to hear a well done falsetto'd line, but that was not. again, all in my opinion, which i believe i'm intitled to.
One thing I didn't like, SMILE JIMMY xD But your voice is amazing

Made me laugh that the set looked like itwas going to separate it.
Liked the singing start of the choreography was funny but then went a bit bland!

I thought "The way you make me feel..." was supposed to be belted out. But otherwise a wonderful performance!

First off, it is possible to belt without hurting your voice you just can't push it past your belt break otherwise yes you can hurt it.
Second off, everyone interprets things differently there is no right or wrong in theatre unless it is said so in the script.
And third off it's possible that the "The way you make me feel..." up to the "A" was too high and so he had to go into falsetto.
Learn to except opinions please, and think about all possibilities before making stupid comments.
