However, art is subjective, and the lyrics speak strongly to Christians. Addiction to any sin is basically the same, and the parts about the addiction mocking and having mastership over the addicted is very poignant.

This song is about Jim Bakker (pronounced Baker), the man who stole millions from his followers in a sort of quick fix Sunday Vegas cult, preaching from the bible things that aren't in it. People who went with it followed him blindly, treating him like the second coming of Jesus and whatnot, until he was arrested for accounting fraud. He spread this false evangelist bullshit through tv programs and public appearances. I don't care for religion, but this guy was an asshole and this is about HIM.

Then they recorded Master Of Puppets in Copenhagen, Denmark in the summer of 1984. Jim Bakker was indicted in 1988 and his court conviction happened in August 1989. The time line doesn't fit at all. However, art is subjective, and the lyrics speak strongly to Christians. Addiction to any sin is basically the same, and the parts about the addiction mocking and having mastership over the addicted is very poignant.
