Every time I get that feeling of being born in the wrong generation, I comfort myself with the fact that I have a (digtital) record collection of oldies that would take up the whole house back then
I wonder if younger people realize that the whole "doo-wop" sound was due to the fact that we had no musical instruments and stood on the City Street corners at night and sang songs acappella (without accompaniment) so the background singers voices would serve as the instruments. Dum-dum-dum, wah-wah-wah-wah! Our parents didn't understand or like it. So it became very popular ;-)
Innocent wonderful times. Making out in the drive in. dancing close. discovering boys were cute & wanting to hold their hand. Such a precious time in your life. Waiting to hear your special someone tell you that they loved you. So very different now. I consider myself blessesd to have lived through the 50 and 60's. It will never be the same again. You younger people have lost out on a wonderful adventure in life!
@LeeLeeDe1 I was born in the 80's and my parents are from this era....we still had oldie stations...too bad that ended at 10 but no need to worry just turn on rockin robbin and every white young person jams....when we take over we will bring the good all days back whether it be McCarthy Trials or whatever it takes we will ensure our children do not forget the culture... look at Rand Paul and Ron Paul....no more large corporations funded by the gov and private property rights with no amnesty!!
Easy folks. Don't be stepping on anyone's rainbows. Being a product of this era, my remembrances are also not quite so innocent. Nostalgic? Yes. Different than today? Yes. Camelot? No more than what it is today. I can say, musically, that I'm going to have a lot more fun and have much more music to dance to at my 50th Class reunion this year than the poor suckas of today will at theirs 50 years from now.
One more thing, music today is what it is because of what the foundations of the past, call it evolution of taste or whatever but the reality is that music has a symbiotic relationship with the ever present social changes, politics, religion, etc. Of course today we are more prone to be bombarded with more "factory" made music with plenty of talentless individuals that benefit on their social appeal and physique than before (studio music) So I don't see much difference in style but accessibility
Sure this music was nice, but what makes me laugh is all these idealist fools in here talking about theirs being a time of openness and equality, race didn't matter in music back then? common! Those who stand by that thought either lived unaware of the realities of their time or suffered from a good citizen syndrome, (as long as they believe it is wrong to be racist but don't get involved everything is fine in their world).
Right your are State Trooper...I'm 66...long for those days long ago. I'm tired of the Larry the Cable guy dress on the men...Sweats or pajamas & flip flops on the women.
Americans used to be so classy ! Our music was known all over the world too.
Statetrooper, you are talking sense. I was a schoolboy back in the fifties, and these here are just the kind of stuff I like and always will. I'm certain there is a market for these kind of sound, people want change and listen to something different. Just look at these guys singing simple songs and doing it for us to enjoy, even your Ma and Granma will love it. Time to stack Rock & Roll away and introduce something new ok Statetrooper, over to you !!
From back in the days when public obscenity got you a deserved puch in the mouth, when Hollywood was about entertainment, not politics and making sleazy, uncivilized crap, and elected politicians mostly acted for the good of the country, not to help their union sponsors and big campaign contributors
A hit in 1957, this is from the R&R Revival era, early 70s. Features the original lead (Norman Wright) and bass singer (Clarence Quick, who wrote the song).
yes folks it wasn't just the great music back in the 50-60's. we had no cellphones or computers. we never walked alone. were also with our friends. your parents always knew who your friends were because they called the house phone and rang the door bell. we were social and we always respected parents and people. today kids just text and use facebook and never meet in person. its dangerous because people lie and its secretive. parents dont know who there friends are. we dressed in fashion also.
Very interesting. I do love the original song, it's a great record. I detect an electric bass, and a full band, I would guess this version is from the post "American Graffiti" period when all things 1950's were given new life. The voice is also deeper, which may indicate that the original was sped up somewhat.
Does anybody know where this recording comes from? I had the single of this song when i was a kid -- as posted by Letec45 -- also by the Del-Vikings, but this is a different recording. I never heard it before. It's really excellent!
@ statetrooper: Yes indeed you're so right. The 50s marked the zenith of good popular music. If I had had the power of deciding how music was to continue from the 50s and VERY early 60s onwards, then neither the Beatles nor the Rolling Stones, for example, would have ever been heard of again. As you also correctly indicate, popular music has severely deteriorated leaving us with this tuneless, profane rubbish being plugged today.
America had it all musically back then. So sweet because we can look at our REAL childhood through the sound of something like this. It reminds me of my uncle driving us to Michigan in his beat up car and making it there, summer break, tasty freezes (a huge one for 5 cent). Peace time. A time when guys sang good songs under the street light and Mama giving us three calls before coming inside and neighbors looking out for us kids, even if they were 'nosey'. Thanks.
Great looking back in history when gas was only 25 cents a gallon, and we were told to see the USA in a Chevrolet! Also the music was real music back then!
damn i wish i was 16 in the 50s....becuse tha music was better kids new wtf a drive shaft in a car was and tha cars where 10 time better! like this if u agrreee with me
@violentJ678 Yeah, well I was 16 in the 50's, grew up in a valley town just like the one in "American Graffiti". I even was picked up by some hoods the way Dreyfuss was in the movie and drove around all night with them. I even dated a girl named "Debbie"! The music was fun, but nothing like the late 60's and 70's. I loved Little Richard, Fats, Diamonds, Del Vikings, and, especially, Gene Vincent. It was also a racist, intolerant era, and we barely dodged a Nixon bullet in 1960.
this is music ladies and gentlemen. music in the 50's-60 were peaceful, fun , simple and always had a theme or a messege to it. it didn't matter what race you were, music attracted everyone and mostly everyone respected one another. there were no swears in the songs. singers had class by dressing neatly. today music focuses on different groups and sure hell not the same. music is crap today. no one respects anyone anymore. well if i had a voice, i will try to bring back music like this.
@statetrooper012 lulz? Race was a huge issue back then, ask any old person who was there. I'm pretty sure their parents said a lot of racist things about groups like the Del-Vikings.
@statetrooper012 I agree music had class back then but wasn't the 50s kinda well bad? Woman had less rights and earned much less than men and sexism was common. Blacks were treated as second class citizens.
@statetrooper012 thats a little intense buddy.. are you saying that music stopped to exist after doo wop died.. i think most would agree that music quality has gone down but theres still a lot of great acts
It came on the radio and i suddenly thought of stand by me and just knew this song was in the film at some point, im only 16 so couldnt quite remember but yeh.
Nothing beats the original!
I wish people would credit oldies like these because now all my friends are like "ahh sean kingston has this awesome new song out itl be number one" im like
"sorry your like 40 odd years late!"
God i wish i was born in a different generation lol.
@DLowSupport Sean Kindston actually did a really good cover. It's very upbeat and very modern. I agree, kids shouldnt be as dumb as to give all the credit to Kingston, but thats besides the point. This is a very good song.
@jixer009 im doing a project in my history of rock n roll class on the del vikings.... and in my presentation i put the youtube clip of the five aces in there! the first time i heard this song was on saved by the bell!!!!! lol
@TheBalladOfSgtPepper : I heard an acapella version of "Come Go With Me" on Pandora (internet radio) performed by the Tokens. It was outstandingly done.
@TheBalladOfSgtPepper Beach Boys's version OK (and I'm a huge fan, saw Brian at a club in Providence, RI a year ago), but original much superior! And this live version outstanding!
Paul McCartney says that when he first saw John Lennon, John was singing this song. John didn't know the words and sang "Don't send me to penitentiary"
it pisses me off that the 40s and 50s are gone forever. if i could go back, id fight in WW2 and soak in the greatest times in american history. it will never be the same, once 1970 hit, it was downhill from there
@backwoodsbamaboy92 hahaha that made my life a little bit more worth living.
I'd do anything to be born in the early 40's to experience all of the 50's and 60's... too bad I was born 40 years to late and now I will never be a part of something as awesome as the 50's... I completely agree with everything you said. If only I could destroy all of technology so everyone was forced to be more like the people were in the 50's
@Beaglesock people actually had common sense back then, so in order for that to happen, we'd have 2 take away all the warning labels, gaurd rails, safety rails on the edge of cliffs and all that so the population would thin itself out. lol. one things for sure, everyone in the white house would be the first to go
@backwoodsbamaboy92 , yeah I agree with the White House part, LOL. But the cars alone want to make me go back, you could actually tell one from the other and they were all US Steel no plastic eccept maybe the tail lights and minor accesories and best of all they were ALL made in the USA! You might see a VW once in a while, but Detroit Steel was KING! And the music, Rock-A-Billy & Rock-N-Roll it had to be awesome! Nice to dream...
@TheImpalas1959 Well, actually they only made 50 of them in 1948 before the SEC shut down the company. But I would love to have one or even ride in one.
@ninman58 Greed. The 80's started the trend of showing off your image, using cheap, electronic instruments, plus promoting to the point where tour money is the most important. The 80's did have some decent music however, but it just kept on getting worse and worse to the point that pop music may be moving underground.
they dont make music like this anymore. It seems to have a mystique to it, maby thats because its so old. I wish some of todays music still sounded like this today. This music seems to trancend everyone of every race.

I wish people would credit oldies like these because now all my friends are like "ahh sean kingston has this awesome new song out itl be number one" im like
"sorry your like 40 odd years late!"
God i wish i was born in a different generation lol.
DLowSupport 1 year ago
@DLowSupport Sean Kindston actually did a really good cover. It's very upbeat and very modern. I agree, kids shouldnt be as dumb as to give all the credit to Kingston, but thats besides the point. This is a very good song.

it pisses me off that the 40s and 50s are gone forever. if i could go back, id fight in WW2 and soak in the greatest times in american history. it will never be the same, once 1970 hit, it was downhill from there
backwoodsbamaboy92 1 year ago
@backwoodsbamaboy92 hahaha that made my life a little bit more worth living.
I'd do anything to be born in the early 40's to experience all of the 50's and 60's... too bad I was born 40 years to late and now I will never be a part of something as awesome as the 50's... I completely agree with everything you said. If only I could destroy all of technology so everyone was forced to be more like the people were in the 50's
Beaglesock 1 year ago
@Beaglesock people actually had common sense back then, so in order for that to happen, we'd have 2 take away all the warning labels, gaurd rails, safety rails on the edge of cliffs and all that so the population would thin itself out. lol. one things for sure, everyone in the white house would be the first to go
backwoodsbamaboy92 1 year ago 2
@backwoodsbamaboy92 , yeah I agree with the White House part, LOL. But the cars alone want to make me go back, you could actually tell one from the other and they were all US Steel no plastic eccept maybe the tail lights and minor accesories and best of all they were ALL made in the USA! You might see a VW once in a while, but Detroit Steel was KING! And the music, Rock-A-Billy & Rock-N-Roll it had to be awesome! Nice to dream...

Why is it that old music from the 50's 60's and 70's is so much better than music today?
ninman58 1 year ago
@ninman58 Greed. The 80's started the trend of showing off your image, using cheap, electronic instruments, plus promoting to the point where tour money is the most important. The 80's did have some decent music however, but it just kept on getting worse and worse to the point that pop music may be moving underground.
