  • I saw the film on release in London.Believe me the version then was a lot longer than this.Like the butchered version of War and Peace it was cut down because American audiences drink too much 'soda' with their popcorn and couldn't sit still for 4 hours or so.The full print is out there somewhere, despite what Mosfilm say.

  • One of my all time favorite war movies. Hard to find on DVD for US region. They don't make movies like this anymore w/ thousands of extras. They use CGI now for large battles. CGI has gotten much better but not like seeing thousands of real people in a battle scene.

  • would that be "war and peace" its over 4 hours long. this is about napoleon.

  • this film is brilliant but i would of loved to see Kubricks version of Napoleon....

  • I can never find the damn theme to this! It is one of the most epic, most dramatic, most uplifting, most heart rending, most gargantuan piece of film music in the history of films!

  • What a film!Rod Steiger, Chris Plummer, a score to match, epic battle scenes...who needs cgi?

  • Rod Steiger as Napoleon should have won an oscar for this.

  • @zenoist2 Yep his performance was superb

  • Rod Steiger was brilliant as napoloen.

    What a great actor!

    Great casting.

They needed someone short and bald I think besides merely being a class actor.

  • Looks to be a very impressive film, but there's only one problem: it was not directed by Stanley Kubrick. ;)

  • pretty impressive that they only threw historical accuracy away once (the bit where the cannons destroyed the infantry square never happened, they did surrender as napoleon was defeated)

  • Wow, I just wish I could see the movie with the extended scenes

  • @ltflak what extended scenes?

  • @Docmate The Russian version of 1970 Waterloo was 4 hours long, but that version was never released here...

  • @ltflak but it was released in russia/eastern europe? if so, wouldn't mind getting my hands on that.

  • @ltflak Stories about 4 hours long is a myth.

  • @Docmate

See my reply to 'itflak'. Like I say, it is only second hand info....but apparently lots of footage was cut. Even many reviews on places like Amazon bemoan the "huge cuts" made to the film.

  • @ltflak

Agreed. It is hard to find out exactly how much they cut from Waterloo, but some folks I've heard discuss it on forums put its original runtime somewhere between 3 and 4 hours - and that's people who remember seeing it in the cinema. Yet the VHS and DVD release is something like 130 mins. Hopefully they will release it on Blu-ray with whatever additional footage is missing. Can you imagine a restoration of a similar quality to the one Zulu got? That I would give my eye teeth for.

  • @ltflak iam from former czechoslovakia,in our cinemas was the russian version

  • epic film of epic proportions.

  • Classic War Movie one of my favs of all time.
