This is a big mistake by Obama. These people had to be pursued and prosecuted. History will call Obama an appeaser not because of his stance on foreign policy, but because he appears afraid to stand for the right thing and that is prosecuting the criminals thats started the waterboarding at G-Bay and calling out the backers of the Bush administration
Confirmation is pretty important. You can't raid a house in Abbottabad on a hunch. However, I understand where he's coming from, since he was tortured for 5.5 years.
i am by no means a republican or any kind of right winger, and honestly, I'm not a big fan of much of McCain's worldview, but I have significant respect for him for being one of the few republicans speaking out about torture
Bravo! John McCain! - Thank you for having the courage to speak out against your party's madness. Looking back, perhaps more Americans will realize that many of Bush's policies (including torture) attacked what bin Laden never could. Traditional American values (based on the Bill of Rights); values fought and died for by generations of Americans, betrayed by the very men who swore an oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution". - Thank you Senator McCain for standing up!
As a democrat I believe McCain. One thing I have noticed about McCain during his career in politics, he has never been partisian. He has always been honest, regardless if that honesty would hurt his political career or disappointed his fellow republicans.
The only people who support torture (Bush, Cheney, Lieberman, Rumsfeld, Limbaugh, etc) are ALL stay-at-home rightwingers who did everything they could to DODGE THE DRAFT40 years ago. They see war as an "Awesome" thing, because all they have is a Hollywood view.
For as much as rightwingers rail against Hollywood, it's Hollywood that creates their entire worldview (24, John Wayne, Schwarzenegger, Rambo, etc.)
@HNK222 Very insightful and true. John McCain, John Kerry, Lawrence Wilkerson and Colin Powell are all men that have actually been in wars. And they are all outspoken against torture.

I'm glad he is speaking out on this important issue. Torture is not the practice of a free republic.

As a Democrat, THIS IS THE JOHN MCCAIN I would have voted for. The impassioned maverick bucking the trend of the party.

@HNK222 Hollywood is more conservative than people think. Rambo, John Wayne, Scwarzzneger, Ronald Reagan are all republicans
