Nice Video thanks ! I am working on a set of cast heads. I have had my eye on the Pro-Comp heads they seem like a great head for the price. that didnt sound right.
at $600 shipped fully machined and assembled you get a lot for the money, i seen a receipt for a rebuilt set of camels at $600 just to rebuild them!, a lot of cars been showing up at the strip with sbc and bbc procomps and i havent seen anyone complaining about them, everyone says theyre a good deal for the money over and over. to the guy saying he heard they dropped the valve seats...that is simply is not true, if you're looking for max power focus main porting efforts on the exhaust
What's your opinion on these heads now? How have they been holding up? I was considering a set of these for my 302, but they have a bad reputation for seats falling out, valves dropping, etc. I was thinking about getting a set and installing some better valve train components. The port work has me concerned though since I've never done it. I have rebuilt engines, rebuilt manual trannies and differentials, etc. but never ported heads before so I'm wondering if I got the finesse to do it :P
I suppose it depends on what castings then. Dont a number that dont have them but a lot that did.;I dont know why they are there either. Always fun porting then seeing the numbers to see what ya did though.
I suppose it depends on what castings then. Dont a number that dont have them but a lot that did.;I dont know why they are there either. Always fun porting then seeing the numbers to see what ya did though.
Come on now. These heads, even in the new form have been out for a while. Should i invest the money or not. I am on as much of a budget as the next guy and dont want to spend $ foolishly, but do these heads perform as advertised or not. Has any one actually flow benched a set of these to compare #'s? . Are they what they say? Flow #'s talk and bullshit walks
@Chevysrule454 Easy now back at you ,, plenty of info out there, go to eBay type in "Pro Comp 210", find the seller "Skip White". There he has drag strip runs and flow bench numbers and Complete heads for $700.oo. YouTube would not allow me to post a link to the charts. But I hope this helps you CR454. Post your results here if you want.
if i had to do that much work to a set of heads for his motor, i would get a set of name brand heads to start with. then when i wanted more powrer i would work on them. i think a set of vortex with good springs is as good as procomps.
@ranger3931 It's onlty a few hours work Ranger. Vortecs are in no way able to flow like these. Mine were 212CC. Vortecs have to be modified to get over o.500 lift. If you buy ProComps and do some work you can save up to $2000.oo over buying the other heads. There's no reason to have heads priced that high to start with.
they dont get a bad name because of flow, they get a bad name because of poor castings, poor machining, inaccurate tooling and measurements, and generally poor metal quality. The revised heads have had better success than the first go around, which had a defect rate of about 50%, but the new heads are still susceptible to the problems their first head had. This is an inescapable part of how procomp has developed their business model.
@danielwetpaint I sure hope so, I have heard that the springs are cheap, but I guess Im gonna take that chance. hopefully they will flow good enough for a sbc 383.
@numskull223 I've had the "Revised" heads and they flow great, did great,no probs, I had 'em on my 383 and 385 stroker so far. That dang Skip White on eay sells them as the best deal around.
@danielwetpaint I just took my Dart heads apart and noticed that theres a big step under the valves also.....just like ppl say the pro comp does. I'll tear in to these Revised procomps and check them out also.....
Thanks for the info. I just bought a set of used Edelbrock 6089 sbc heads and was thinking about porting them. I noticed my valve guides sticking in quite a bit too. I couldn't tell if you actually leveled them off to the hight of the aluminum or you just take a bit of an angle on the bronze to help the flow. 327 +.030" FT p's, solid lifter gm cam .450/.430 . Wil the extra work be noticeable on a small ci street engine like this?
These heads are decent from the box. They don't need much, just cleaned up and matched. If I have your gaskets it'll take a day and a half and about $300.oo.Thats gasket matched and the bowls worked. I'm getting ready to buy another set for a ratrod project.
Heck yeah, thanks for the vid duder. As I understand it, machine-cutting valve seats is much better than just lapping, especially with the cuts they do these days where they intentionally leave a ridge along the circumference of the seat that flattens and creates a good seal upon use. Or so I've heard in my small world...
Know any good books on porting? I always have the opportunity to do it, but no one to learn from and no general rules to use when doing it.
David Vizard has the best ones,,"How to Modify Small Block Chevy Heads". Also "How to Max Performance SBC" or simialt title. He wrote about 5 on the SBC. Look up David Vizard on eBay,,The book "How to Modify" is going into Hundreds of Dollars each,,,what gives on that?
just thought id let you know valvoline vr racing oil is a good oil to use for break in i would recommend a bottle of cam break in additive as well but i use the vr oil in everything its made for offroad use so it has a good amount of zinc left in it just a thought for you to save a few bucks on break in oil
AFR SBC Race Ready heads start at $1500. AFR roller cam SBC heads start at $1650. You'll pick up at least 50 more hp when compared to the pro comp heads. AFR 227 heads will pick up around 100 more hp.
Not even , $1450 unless you get the Comp Port and they dont even compare to these of course you cant expect it, for $700 you get what you get. Those notches are on most production stock heads, they have a reason for being there. If you really want to pick those heads up work on the low-mid lift areas thats the weak spot. Bigger isnt always better.
@1355550 I've ported around 50 to 60 sets of production heads and those notches are not present like you suggest. That is a ProComp casting problem. The low/mid lift areas have already been addressed in the "Revised" ProComps,,,, and where I show to "enhance" is what gives you the higher gains. They don't need much to get them the same. You can also pay to have them CNC Ported, where as they'll be perfect.
Your video is good effort but let me help you with a few things the book doesn't tell you. So that you'll listen i just did a set of these and here were the flow # 274@ 650lift and 237 exhuast at 700lift. To do this and make the heads live get a good dial caliper and leave 100thous in the critical area's(pushrod pinch, common wall, spring pocket unless going bigger springs. knock out the head bolt material in the intake runner. create a bigger pinch in exhuast around guide. Large gains.
.100 thousandths seems a little thin on aluminum heads, especially if streeting it,( if it hit 230F and warmer in traffic lookout! ). I personally wouldn't run them that thin,,BUT for winning a race maybe.
Are you racing the pair ? I'd love to know more about the engine and it's performance,,as in ET's etc. Those flow numbers seem about right. I've never heard "Pinch", is that your nickname for an area in the port? Can you show what you're describing on a video?
The pushrod pinch area on a SBC head is that area between the intake port and the pushrod. What's funny about this area is that it would seem obvious that grinding on this area would increase flow, but just about every SBC head I've ever tried that on lost flow when analyzed on a flow bench (before and after). The reason I believe is that the pinch area actually redirects the flow more toward the center of the cylinder. Valve shrouding is the biggest problem with the SBC intake system.
I learn something new everyday. Thanks for the info. I do know about the restrictions in airflow around the backside of the Intake valve. I cut the Combustion Chamber away on a pair of #186's in a diameter of 2.30 inches from valve stem centerline.
Interesting video...some good info here. I just purchased a set of these PRO COMP heads from White Performance and I do plan on doing some light port work/clean-up on them. I, like many others, am a bit nervous about using parts that are not big "name brands", but, you can't beat the price! Thanks for sharing your knowledge here.
Your page is great,,I especially like your Son's Go-Cart Video. He's a daredevil.
Like you said these are cheap (and fun),, I recommend running them with headstuds but my buddy is running them with stock bolts.Good luck and hug the family for me.
danielwet paint,I can't believe you bought Pro Comp heads..everybody rag on them so a year ago I bought a set and with mild porting go 600+ hp fitted on my 360 sprint car..I ran them 20 races hard and just last week freshen the motor, the heads held up fine...machinist/head builder so I ask him what I could do to improve the performance since they held up so well....I put a 2.100 intake in,opened the bowl area behind the intake and exhaust valves and my freind unshrouded the large intake valve
Yes Ted I did,,I wanted to see whats up! I'm happy with them.On this particular engine I still havent started it yet. I do alot of things that others don't,,
I mow the grass when it's wet. I study old home medicines and grow herbs.
I don't hunt or harm anything. I study ancient texts.
I built my own home. I even had a ufo come to within 300 feet of me in 2002,,no kidding.
I like being different.LOL,,,Thanks for the comment Ted.
Hey i am bought 434 shortblock from ohio crankchaft 4340 4' crank 6' H-beam rods JE 13.5 1 dome pistons , Using my AFR 220 heads cam is 625/ 625 billet roller , Running Alky Fuel ... how much HP you think ? 700hp
Hey Guys,, Remember to BREAK ~ IN your engines with special oil. I bought 5 quarts of Royal Purple "Break In Oil".Your cam will not survive if you don't.
Regular oil has no appreciable Zinc or Phosphates/ Phosphorus. When I opened the Royal Purple "Break In Oil" I noticed that it smelled just like rear end grease.HHHMMmmm,,,maybe we can make our own Hi- Zinc engine oil. That oil cost me $9.oo each. I don't know about you but I'm going to try it to save all my flat tappet engines. Thanks.
You did an excellent job showing off your porting work. In California, you can't do any porting or polishing on 1976 or newer cars. All engine modifications require an executive order number issued by the state; it's horrible. By the way, your hot rod looks cool!
RHS Heads have always been top notch heads. Those guys really care. I think that the "RHS" name has been bought 'n sold a few times. Different companies but good heads.
From what I understand porting will not help Vortecs.I think that design has been pushed and all potential squeezed out.The LS1 is a new SBC design that eats anything else ever produced,,and it has so much more potential to realize.I know of a 660 horse Vette that is a street kitty(with AC) but roars when poked. The same guy has another LS1 that makes 1000 horses and is reliable.Like I said I'm going over to the LS1 school.I would sell the Vortec and get an LS1 and get the 4 bbl manifold on it.

The pushrod pinch area on a SBC head is that area between the intake port and the pushrod.
