@MarcinNevinyrral and my Grandfather, LAC J P Gilman had the honour of repairing their aircraft. He served with 301/303 Sqdn during BoB and later with 229 Sqdn in North africa. He rated the Poles very highly above most RAF pilots for their courage and tenacity, even though 229 had some brave pilots. He's in his 90's now and dying of cancer in a nursing home, but when he speaks about his time with the poles he brightens up.
Off-topic: I was in London last year and it's a truly remarkable city. Wasn't able to see a half what we had planned, so would be coming back this year or next, however was amazed in part. by the Tower of London and St Paul's Cathedral.

@KoszmarnyKarol very true. They were however valued and worshiped almost by their RAF groundcrew. My Grandad still recalls vividly his time with 301 and 303 Sqdn. He was an instrument mechanic. They inspired him so much he volunteered for flight training three times during the BoB, but partly due to his being a very talented mechanic (he was a watchmaker by trade) and partly because he was a poor orphan from the Wrexham slums he was turned down three times.

yes Poland was first to fight... but read what british soldiers said at the time in september... they were unhappy that british politics got involved and didnt help Poland right away. There wasn`t enough english pilots to fight with nazi Germans so Poles get this job.... British National Party used the distinctly British icon of a Spitfire to illustrate their idea of a Battle for Britain. Ironically, the Spitfire shown in their advertising was RF-D from 303 (Polish) Squadron - It was spitfire of Donald Zumbach. Thank for memory of Polish pilots BNP. Poles was really moved. ;-)
From an american with a proud polish heritage. I am a Untied States Army ROTC cadet and i am extremely proud of my heritage. Poland had the best resistance in ww2 hands down. POLAND fought for over 6 years. POLAND NEVER QUITS NO MATTER WHAT! I have alot of polish in my blood and i love it. look at the germans now. Guess who wants to trainign with the polish grom? the german Gsg9. The germans know poland is beast!

Nice memorial. Thanks. I just read "The Forgotten Few: The Polish Air Force in the Second World War" by Adam Zamoyski which really puts the Polish contribution during the Battleof Britain in context. It's the 70th anniversary of the BoB and in all the TV coverage in the UK I didn't hear any reference to the Polish (or other allied) contribution. A Conspiracy of Silence?

I for one am proud of my Polish Heritage. There is a wondrfull book anout Poles in the RAF called "For our freedom and yours" which is a wonderfull read. I agree with Scottduncacn 44 that the airmen never got the recognition they so deserve...It is about time they did!

Poles were the best! I became friends with a member of 315 Sq, and I can't get over how Poland was completely forgotten after the war, because of fear of offending Stalin. A terrible shame.

I've heard from the direct witness (one of the pilots I knew), how it was with Frantisek and why he had the biggest amount of shot germans. Frantisek did like that - after the air battles usually some germans tried to come back directing to the continent, but their machines were damaged and they were flying slowly, so there the Frantisek used to come and finish them, which was not difficult. I've heard that other allied and Polish pilots knew this his practise and didn't like it.
znałem jednego z pilotów 308 dywizjonu, p. Stanisława Bochniaka, spotykałem się z nim co najmniej kilka razy w miesiącu, odwiedzjąc go (niestety zmarł niedawno - kilka tygodni temu). Jego podsumowanie polskiego wysiłku i pomocy naszym "aliantom" brzmiało "I PO CO NAM TO BYŁO?".

@goarmysinknavy And the british made an effort to resupply the poles when they were fighting the germans as the soviets approached yet the soviets stood back and watched your cities get flatened to the ground as the germans retreated. They never gave up and thats why the british always tried to help them out, they had a similar spirit, my grandmother is always thankful to the destroyer ORP Piorun for trying to defend Clydebank during the Glasgow blitz.

The Uk gave the Polish pilots a great airplane to fight back with, and they certainly taught the germans a lesson.

And, I in turn was teaching them English. Now I have moved on from that job. My new job I am working for an Italian family.......... So, now Italian as well..... :-)

@MarcinNevinyrral and my Grandfather, LAC J P Gilman had the honour of repairing their aircraft. He served with 301/303 Sqdn during BoB and later with 229 Sqdn in North africa. He rated the Poles very highly above most RAF pilots for their courage and tenacity, even though 229 had some brave pilots. He's in his 90's now and dying of cancer in a nursing home, but when he speaks about his time with the poles he brightens up.

Off-topic: I was in London last year and it's a truly remarkable city. Wasn't able to see a half what we had planned, so would be coming back this year or next, however was amazed in part. by the Tower of London and St Paul's Cathedral.

@KoszmarnyKarol very true. They were however valued and worshiped almost by their RAF groundcrew. My Grandad still recalls vividly his time with 301 and 303 Sqdn. He was an instrument mechanic. They inspired him so much he volunteered for flight training three times during the BoB, but partly due to his being a very talented mechanic (he was a watchmaker by trade) and partly because he was a poor orphan from the Wrexham slums he was turned down three times.

There wasn`t enough english pilots to fight with nazi Germans so Poles get this job.... British National Party used the distinctly British icon of a Spitfire to illustrate their idea of a Battle for Britain. Ironically, the Spitfire shown in their advertising was RF-D from 303 (Polish) Squadron - It was spitfire of Donald Zumbach. Thank for memory of Polish pilots BNP. Poles was really moved. ;-)

From an american with a proud polish heritage. I am a Untied States Army ROTC cadet and i am extremely proud of my heritage. Poland had the best resistance in ww2 hands down. POLAND fought for over 6 years. POLAND NEVER QUITS NO MATTER WHAT! I have alot of polish in my blood and i love it. look at the germans now. America left Poland hanging The UK wanted to not give an inch and fight Stalin if necessary but alas FDR was in bad bad health and pretty much gave the USSR what it wanted in eastern Europe. Maybe if FDR had lived he wouldn't have given in so completely...i dunno. but its BS:(

@gawaine05 dude that joke with horses on tanks was german propaganda movie after a cavalry unit killed german infantry and were surprised by oncoming tanks and wre killed as result so germans took pics to show how dumb german enemise are.quite funny that german propaganda still works 60 years later and especially in the west.how come usa and britain do trust german and russian sources more than from other countries and still to this day.they alerady made this mistake too often.quite sad and dumb

Poland is like older brother- if somebody needs help, we help. after that, they don't care about us, till next time.
maybe there are better tanks, planes, and ships in uk, BUT it means nothing, because they don't know anything about real fight. they use them only in training camps. Poland has big expirence in battle, thats why they should respect us.

We did many good things for Europe. we were fighting for others not only with nazis. and what we got for it? we were betrayed many times.
couple weeks ago, i had argue with a guy from uk. he said that only british pilots were fighting, and ww II was because of Poland. there are many ppl from near east livin in uk. and I'm sure they won't fight. same with gipsys, blacks and others who are saying they are english. I won't fight for them too, because they don't deserve for it!

Nice memorial. Thanks. I just read "The Forgotten Few: The Polish Air Force in the Second World War" by Adam Zamoyski which really puts the Polish contribution during the Battleof Britain in context. It's the 70th anniversary of the BoB and in all the TV coverage in the UK I didn't hear any reference to the Polish (or other allied) contribution. A Conspiracy of Silence?

Being a 2nd generation Pole myself I will always remember my Grandmother talking about the war in Poland and the struggle she put up with whilst my Grandfather fought in the Polish army alongside the British. I for one am proud of my Polish Heritage. There is a wondrfull book anout Poles in the RAF called "For our freedom and yours" which is a wonderfull read. I agree with Scottduncacn 44 that the airmen never got the recognition they so deserve...It is about time they did!

Poles were the best! I became friends with a member of 315 Sq, and I can't get over how Poland was completely forgotten after the war, because of fear of offending Stalin. A terrible shame.

I've heard from the direct witness (one of the pilots I knew), how it was with Frantisek and why he had the biggest amount of shot germans. Frantisek did like that - after the air battles usually some germans tried to come back directing to the continent, but their machines were damaged and they were flying slowly, so there the Frantisek used to come and finish them, which was not difficult. I've heard that other allied and Polish pilots knew this his practise and didn't like it.

znałem jednego z pilotów 308 dywizjonu, p. Stanisława Bochniaka, spotykałem się z nim co najmniej kilka razy w miesiącu, odwiedzjąc go (niestety zmarł niedawno - kilka tygodni temu). Jego podsumowanie polskiego wysiłku i pomocy naszym "aliantom" brzmiało "I PO CO NAM TO BYŁO?".

Poland has the best resistance in ww2. because Poles never quit no matter what. people say france had the best no they didnt. poland was taken over in 1939 France 1940. just because the country was taken over didnt mean that the war was over for them they kept fighting. Proud polish american

@goarmysinknavy And the british made an effort to resupply the poles when they were fighting the germans as the soviets approached yet the soviets stood back and watched your cities get flatened to the ground as the germans retreated. They never gave up and thats why the british always tried to help them out, they had a similar spirit, my grandmother is always thankful to the destroyer ORP Piorun for trying to defend Clydebank during the Glasgow blitz.

Because the United States and Britian never give up. when someone tell me poland got taken over in 2 weeks. i say it was a long 2 weeks. Poland fought with everything they had. Regardless being outdated in weapons. we gave the germans and soviets everything they had. Poland did is a dam good job. POLAND FIRST TO FIGHT. POLAND NEVER QUITS

@goarmysinknavy Exactly, just becaue because your country is small does't mean you didn't try to defend yourself, Scotland was the first place in the UK to have to fight of the nazi's, we have a long history like poland of fighting of evil aggressors your 303 squadron, faught with such hatred and aggresion, it shot down more enemy airplanes than any other UK squadron. The Uk gave the Polish pilots a great airplane to fight back with, and they certainly taught the germans a lesson.

Pride and to Never Quit is something that runs in poles blood, look at the POLAND MILITARY Now, look who wants to train with the POLISH GROM the GERMAN GSG9. the GERMANS LEARN A HUGE LESSON IN WW2. THAT LESSON IS TO NEVER QUIT AND NEVER LET YOUR COUNTRY DOWN NO MATTER WHAT DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR.
