@pantstelly93@mezzXO I was in the king and I show at the Lowry and was a prince(loved the dressing room) and they are NOT held on by elastic bands. They are on hair nets with hair grips attached (it hurt when they were putting them on me). If you want truth, just reply to this. I will remember it always. It is sad my performance is over. I was even in the Oldham chronicle! Please do not ask me about it for any other reason. It makes me sad just thinking about it!
@dreamgirl71095 Don't forget about the "children of wives not in favor of king - 67 I think" :)
And later on when the English ambassador asks him how many children he has, he responds "only 106 I have not been married that long - oh, but expecting 5 more next month" lol
Am I the only one who thinks that the animated movie just ripped it's music STRAIGHT from this? Don't misunderstand me. I mean it sounds like they just copy-pasted the music from this movie into the animated one. They didn't compose it again. They just used this.
@TheStealthX If you use that logic then this movie "ripped" the music from Rodgers and Hammerstein. This is the music from their musical, made into a movie, which was then later reworked into an animated film. It's not ripping, the music and story are just conventionally put together.
@thishasonepurpose No, I don't mean like that. I mean the music sounds identical in both movies. Its like they just used this video and spoke over the dialogue
Those kids are adorable! And I really like how the King is so gentle, yet firm, when they make a mistake, like turning one's back or showing excessive informality...
@faerie4 it is just after the end of this scene the little girl is late for the presentation so she runs in between the kings legs and crouches into her bow and the king picks her up and turns her round lol
It may not be Thai culture to be all snuggly but I'm sure the little girl who wanted a hug from daddy didn't do it to embarrass him. Most children want love and cuddles - I think she was just acting naturally!
We are doing "The King and I" in my town, and I am one of the wives. My daughter is the one who turns her back, but redeems herself by giving Anna the flower from her hair. (We had to combine some parts. It's a small town.)
Many, many years ago when this first started in New York, I wanted to go see it,,,but circumstances were wrong. So, eventually we could buy the music, and I played it all day long..so many very beautiful songs and words to go with them! Then , finally I did get to see two live performances...one in Detroit, and one in Cleveland...but no YUL BRENNER! He was GREAT! Almost as if the part were written for him...Sadly, he died from throat cancer...We just didn't know then how harmful it was!
This was, and always will be, the true classic! The remake they attempted a few years ago absolutely sucked! Once you have something right, you should never mess with it!
@ctimson50 But of course it wasn't right! The later version was much more accurate but still not good enough to be accepted in Thailand where all versions are banned!!
I was in a community theatre production of this musical when I was in grammar school. I was one of the many children. This has always been my favourite musical movie and in my top 3 musicals of all time!
The King is the most arrogant, pompous man I have ever seen in a movie. And I love him. He is just so full of himself but you can't hate that about him because he actually believes it.
He recognizes that he's truly awesome, and to hell with anyone else that doesn't see it lol
i listen to this wen i do my homework. its been proven that i get most answers right when listening to THIS song in particular. THANK YOU ROGERS AND HAMMERSTIEN!
Dang...look in the background at 2:33 right after the girl in pink turns her back. The Head Wife gives her death look. This is such a good movie, but there were some little jokes that were in the original production that I wish they had kept.
Thanks for your comment about turning the little one around. I thought I had misremembered-and it was so adorable in a scene of incredible adorableness. Also, great touch, how the designated wives(not concubines) collect the children.
Everytime I see this scene, I get the warm and fuzzies. I do wish, like the play they had the youngest go through his legs, he picks him/her up and while the little tot's frozen in the kneeling position, he places the baby in their proper place with the others.. or a variation of it. Anyway, they are all so precious. The Music piece is also incredible, wouldn't be the same without it.
I liked the twins, the little girl with the flower, the one at 2:10, and my favorite one, the oldest son, the Prince :) but most of all, i liked all them ^.^
Magnificent Hollywood. The cast, the sets, the costumes, the music, ooh the music. It just doesn't get any better than this. Rogers and Hammerstein were unparalleled.
My musical theatre debut was as the crown prince -- over 40 years ago! I can still remember waiting in the wings for my cue with this wonderful music. What an entrance!
should show the bit slightly after this when another kid runs out and kneels and the king carries him while in the kneeling position..that was the epic
I saw this live in Indiana (Amish Country) and I got to meet the cast afterwards. I got to meet the littlest girl in this clip (well, not the one in the actual movie but the little girl that played her when I saw it live)
