Great video but I would think it would be better training with a heavier object to actually build up your strength since that plays a big role in stick handling
@malcom425 The idea is to combo it up and do both. Heavier balls or pucks to work strength, lighter ones to work quick twitch muscle fibers. Kinda like the difference between square and sprints, both work totally different things, but both contribute to enhanced speed and power.
I don't know if you have heard yet but checking has been banned from Pee-Wees in USA Hockey leagues, I personally don't think this will be good because kids won't know how to hit in bantams, when kids are starting to grow. I would like to know if you have heard of this and your opinion on it.
@thekingcuber haha - not enough room to get into it here, but there are certain parts of it i'm ok with, and certain parts i really disagree with. it seems like USA Hockey is trying to fundamentally change their entire training approach to more closely mimic the way europeans do things. while i definitely think there are certain things we can learn from the euros, i think we're forgetting why canada and usa have met in the finals of so many international events lately... because we play TOUGH!
@thekingcuber when we start turning our players into wimps, we lose our competitive advantage in international play. also, i agree with you. i think the best option would be to legalize checking at all ages (at least in travel hockey), then actually TEACH the kids to do it right from the get go. 6 year olds aren't strong or heavy enough to do any damage to each other. by pushing the age back further and further, you just open the door for heavy, fast, INEXPERIENCED players to hurt each other.
@weissie20 I agree with what you have said. another thing i think about is the safety of the players. In bantams I've seen kids 6'5" and kids barely over 5' and when these kids don't know how to hit properly or receive a properly then they are going to get hurt. It also takes longer for them to learn the checking is mainly for getting people off the puck, not hurting the other players.
where do you get that black thing from

@weissie20 Ok thanks I didn't ever think that practicing with a lighter ball would enhance your skills when playing with a puck
