The first time I saw Danny Kaye was in the Inspector General when I was around 8 years old. Since then I have seen almost everything he has appeared in. I wont ever forget his charm and grace, and especially his amazing talent! My only regret is that I wont ever be able to meet him. He is sorely missed. I am 18 years old and I am a Danny Kaye fan!
Oh he was a funny fellow! Darling man! This clip reminded me of an uncle of mine who would not have been above punking the panel for the sake of a laugh.
It would be better if instead of saying something like that, to read some of the many biographies on him (and his wife and four children). Or, if my Dad who played in the orchestra of his T.V. show, as well as many of the band members who were personal friends of Danny's could tell you, he was very much straight.
Through no fault of your own, perhaps you mistook his kind, playful, elf-like manner (one of his endearing charms to all who knew him) as somehing else. No worries.
I completely agree with you, except that he and his wife Sylvia only had one child, Dena Kaye. She was born in 1946. (Though he should have had more, from the article I read that Dena wrote about him, he was a great father to her.) Everything else, WELL SAID!!!
Dear Neverland, you're so correct! I don't know why my memory had it that he had 4 children, instead of his only daughter (maybe because I'm one of 4!). Regardless, he was a very well loved and gentle man, with a passion for making people smile. How much richer could a person be? Thanks for the correction. All the best thoughts to you and yours!
@chettmansberger All the best to you too! Also, I just wanted to say, that is so cool that your Dad played in the orchestra on his show. That is so wonderful that you knew someone who knew him. Did you ever get to go see his show, (if you are old enough that is)? I have a few of his shows that I've collected, and I can't imagine what it was like to see it live.
Danny passed away soon after he conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic - Morale of the story: NEVER wait to see someone you adore - because they might not be with us for very long...
I heard that a lot of stars back then went "both ways", the men and the women, but it was kept hidden. I was not like now they like to "out" people. Sometimes they tried to out celebrities in those days but somehow it still managed to be kept secret. But anyway Danny Kaye was a very funny man, he cracks me up!
It was only after he signed with Sam Goldwyn that it was realized he just didn't photograph well - his face was all angles and looked vaguely satanic. Goldwyn himself had the brilliant idea to dye his hair blonde and that did the trick.
@jay230992 When Tony starts laughing, you can hear him say to Dorothy "He (Bennet) thinks it's Harpo (Marx)." Why the two of them thought that was so funny...who know?
@Thesupershane20 you mean the fact that he was married to a woman prooves that he wasn't gay or bisexual ? LOl...I know one thing too : there is nothing in the world that people tell as many lies about as their sex lives :-)
I've read 3 biogs and many accounts of DK and notwithstanding the extreme secrecy involved in stars' lives in past times there is no absolute proof that he was gay.Furthermore many actors/actresses had/have crushes on one another of the same sex out of awe and admiration and many act feminine because its a way of drawing attention to oneself( my mom was in the theatre world). Anyway no one can prove it outright and he was still sexy as hell.
I agree to curb1510 comments - Joan Plowright was taking the heat off herself- there was never any proof of DK having been involved there. Also he IS sexy as hell and seemed to have many affairs with the ladies.
Tony Randall's laugh is both irrating and annoying. It sounds totally clownish and dorky as some other person commented before. He wasn't even funny at all in this clip. Apart from that, this was one of the funniest clips I've seen from this show. Danny Kaye was totally awesome in this segment.
Our "esteemed" President much have been watching the Danny Kaye performance here; obfuscation, misinformation, and prevarication......but, at LEAST Danny is competent and has a long resume.
It's also interesting to observe Danny's reaction to the question "Are you a comedian ?" at 0:55 which then goes into an extended funny pantomime routine - that makes the audience roar, but the point of fact is Danny ALWAYS resented being classified as "Comedian" - the term he preferred more was "Entertainer" which is surely a somewhat broader term and corresponds perfectly to his specialty.
When "Hans Christian Andersen" was first cast by Goldwyn, the leading role was offered to Gary Cooper, who declined it. Kaye accepted it, and it's hard now to imagine anybody else playing that role in the movie.
@casinobowling It wasn't Tony Randall that made her laugh. It was Bennett Cerf that made them both laugh, when he asked the guest if he had brothers that are well known in entertainment. Danny Kaye had been up to that point nearly silent, so Mr. Cerf was suggesting that perhaps the guest was Harpo Marx!
@senoramariposa I knew when he asked Danny if he had brothers he was thinking maybe it was Harpo. And of the old old scholol Harpo Marx and Danny Kaye are the MASTERS of comedy
This was a refreshing twist to the usual mystery guest segment and very very funny. Danny's expressions alone were worth it. He was punking the panel and having a blast doing it. A classic episode!!!
when ever I see Danny Kaye I now think immeadiately of (Kramer) Michael Richards- they share many atributes of look and gesture - if a story of D.K.'s life is produced I suggest Michael richards cast as D.K. and Kelsey Gramer be cast as Bob Hope !
Mr. Kaye was a Ambassador for UNICEF and traveled all over the world meeting children. In 1960 he lent his name to: "Danny Kaye's Around the World Story Book" a delightful collection of children stories...continues to be one of my favorite books...
Danny Kaye snubbed an 8 year old George Carlin, who was alone, in the rain, asking for an autograph. When they met many years later, George didn't tell him about it, although he never forgot it.
One of my favorite WML episodes! Just gotta love the way Danny Kaye spins the whole panel...and the way in the end Arlene and Bennette both cry "Danny Kaye!"

a 1966 color clip from the CBS Danny Kaye comedy variety show in which he sings his Petroff the Thinker routine. Toward the end of that lyric [ 4:48 in fact ], it mentions John Daly and What's My Line?
This is 1960, the year that Kilgallen's substance abuse problem was approaching full bloom. However at 1:55 > one wonders what Tony Randall AND Dorothy both had before the broadcast and what proof?
Just as a side note...there is a Japanese comedian in the comedy band called Crazy Cats (1956~) who based his stage name on Danny Kaye (Tani Kei).
There is also another actor, Yasuo Yamada, who already passed away but became an actor because he liked Danny Kaye. He also did the original voice for Lupin the 3rd.
The term "attached" doesn't readily mean they were together in that way. I'm sure Larry (who was a noted bisexual) was fond of Danny. Danny however, was too much of a closet case on many levels, to read if he felt the same way about Larry.
I can't believe Plowright to be a homewrecker when both Larry and Vivien sought out other lovers during their tempestuous marriage.
All involved had issues, and part of me is glad that Olivier chose not to talk about his sex life in his autobio.
You're right the term "attached" doesn't necessarily mean a sexual relationship, But Plowright was saying this in the context of a romantic liaison. She was defending herself, by pointing out that she was not the one who broke-up the marriage. If Olivier and Kaye were just friends what would be the point of bringing Kaye into the discussion at all.
@curb1510 Well, a million reasons. Not ALL friendships are sexual. But is Kaye and Oliver were friends then she may have wanted Kaye to know she wasnt the bad guy / girl. Like she would be defending herself to let him know HER side
@missgibbdreamer As for Joan Plowright's comments, I thought she was just defending herself because people used to blame her for the dissolution of Olivier's first marriage. Her response was that Kaye was in the picture throughout both marriages.
@missgibbdreamer Sorry but I can't find the specific comment you were responding to. For the time being, suffice to say that there's not much that you wrote that I would disagree with. It wouldn't make any difference to me if he is gay or straight. I agree that not all friendships are sexual...in fact I believe most are NOT sexual.
Interesting that they asked if he was Olivier. The two were reputed to have had an affair that lasted for 10 years. Olivier's wife, Joan Plowright confirmed this. Sylvia Fine, his wife, apparently did not have a problem with it. She was his beard and he got her the gigs when it came to writing many of the songs he performed on film.
Any feedback on this?
Unfortunate that he had to hide, if this is true, Love Danny Kaye!
"I have always resented the comments that it was I who was the homewrecker of Larry's marriage to Vivien Leigh. Danny Kaye was attached to Larry far earlier than I."
I agree with most people here. Danny Kaye refusing to speak and lying takes a lot of the fun out of it. In this case the panel makes the jokes and that saves it. You would think that Danny Kaye could bring the house down with his crazy voices but he doesn't even try. Tony Randall comes up with the best line that everyone seems to miss. "Is it Sir Harpo Marx?"
I agree, it was a bit awkward to watch the panel struggle but their jokes totally saved this segment. It's a shame because I LOVEEE Danny Kaye and would have enjoyed seeing his comedic talents shine here but it wasn't to be.
Perhaps he simply didn't want to participate on WML. He makes it clear at the end that it was his intention to do what he did so perhaps he just wasn't into the show?
Nice to see Mr Randle on the show again!
Thanks for sharing! I still love Danny and WML.. =)
@gottamatch Maybe. But I THINK he just believed it would be funner this way. What voice could he have possably used that they would not know who he was.. Maybe its me but over all I think Danny enjoyed hisself
I found this to be very funny and I have watched it several times. "The point" was that which was made by Danny at the end ... that he had twitted Bennett on numerous occasions that if he ever appeared as a mystery guest he would lie. And he pulled it off. But actually it appears that his answers were pretty much true, just not straightforward. Anyway, he did a brilliant job at fooling the panel, which was the ultimate object of this segment of the show (if the celebrity could pull it off).
At 1:57, Tony says to Dorothy, "He thinks it's Harpo!" They are probably laughing so hysterically because the thought passed through their heads and they had already eliminated it as an absurd possibility.
I understand what Kaye intended to do, but the object is for the mystery guest to fool the panel, while answering questions honestly (check out Ann Miller's WML clip- that's the way to do it). Any mystery guest could come out, mislead the panel, and stump them (Kaye did have a hit record, he was a comedian, he wasn't a Knight and didn't play one (he played a Court Jester), and he also didn't play Hamlet). As Randall stated, "It's easy to win if you lie."
They DID knight him in the Court Jester...rather swiftly, but nonetheless, Knighted. And he may have played a joke on Laurence Olivier, which could validate him playing Hamlet...OK...it's a stretch but I just adore Danny Kaye!!!!
@slc2466 He mostly told the truth. He just didnt go into the details. And those details would have been a dead give away. He just didnt tell EVERYHING
I don't find this mystery guest sequence funny, because Kaye is bamboozling the panel by lying. Sure Elizabeth Montgomery could, hypothetically speaking, convince the panel she was Queen Elizabeth by lying, but the panel is blindfolded, so what's the sport in that? The panel was so peeved by this that they referred to it for months after: when Dorothy Kilgallen appeared as a mystery guest five months later she said, "John will let Danny Kaye lie, but not me."
Oooh yes -- crackup. and Dorothy's laugh as well. Double crack up. I do not understand what they find so darned funny about Bennett's question, which leads me to wonder what the two of them imbibed before the broadcast.
Evidently when Tony eliminated Jack Lemmon, he and Dorothy both began thinking, "Who do we know ... who is it that wouldn't speak and is a comedian?" Harpo Marx was famous for not saying a word in the Marx brothers' films and obviously both Tony and Dorothy had the same idea at the same time as Bennett did when he posed his question about working with famous brothers. So they both collapsed in laughter over the coincidence.
He was awesome!

1:47
1:54 what on earth had Dorothy and Tony been drinking before the show? At least in this sequence they might as well be wearing lampshades.
Kaye looked positive radiant at the thought of being mistaken for Maurice Evans.

All involved had issues, and part of me is glad that Olivier chose not to talk about his sex life in his autobio.
sayward12 2 years ago
You're right the term "attached" doesn't necessarily mean a sexual relationship, But Plowright was saying this in the context of a romantic liaison. She was defending herself, by pointing out that she was not the one who broke-up the marriage. If Olivier and Kaye were just friends what would be the point of bringing Kaye into the discussion at all.
curb1510 2 years ago

I agree that not all friendships are sexual...in fact I believe most are NOT sexual.

if you have other clips w/ Danny on WML, that would be awesome!
sayward12 2 years ago
Interesting that they asked if he was Olivier. The two were reputed to have had an affair that lasted for 10 years. Olivier's wife, Joan Plowright confirmed this. Sylvia Fine, his wife, apparently did not have a problem with it. She was his beard and he got her the gigs when it came to writing many of the songs he performed on film.
Any feedback on this?
Unfortunate that he had to hide, if this is true, Love Danny Kaye!
curb1510 3 years ago
actually I believe Joan Plowright denied that there was an affair between Kaye and her husband but did not deny the fact that Olivier was bisexual
DancingEwok 2 years ago
Here's the quote from Plowright on imdb:
"I have always resented the comments that it was I who was the homewrecker of Larry's marriage to Vivien Leigh. Danny Kaye was attached to Larry far earlier than I."
Let me know what you think.
curb1510 2 years ago
In her memoirs she denied the affair, but memoirs aren't always true, usually how one wishes things to be remembered ^_^

So true about most recollections isn't it.
I don't think we will ever know for certain. I mean I'm using online resources...not always the most reliable.
THANK YOU FOR BEING CIVIL. I get so tired of posting an innocuos comment and someone feels compelled to freak out.

"Is it Sir Harpo Marx?"
meanwiddlekid 3 years ago

Anyway, he did a brilliant job at fooling the panel, which was the ultimate object of this segment of the show (if the celebrity could pull it off).
romeman01 3 years ago 5
At 1:57, Tony says to Dorothy, "He thinks it's Harpo!" They are probably laughing so hysterically because the thought passed through their heads and they had already eliminated it as an absurd possibility.
romeman01 3 years ago
I understand what Kaye intended to do, but the object is for the mystery guest to fool the panel, while answering questions honestly (check out Ann Miller's WML clip- that's the way to do it). Any mystery guest could come out, mislead the panel, and stump them (Kaye did have a hit record, he was a comedian, he wasn't a Knight and didn't play one (he played a Court Jester), and he also didn't play Hamlet). As Randall stated, "It's easy to win if you lie."
slc2466 3 years ago
They DID knight him in the Court Jester...rather swiftly, but nonetheless, Knighted. And he may have played a joke on Laurence Olivier, which could validate him playing Hamlet...OK...it's a stretch but I just adore Danny Kaye!!!!

I agree this doesn't work. What's the point in lying as the mystery guest?
slc2466 3 years ago
I don't find this mystery guest sequence funny, because Kaye is bamboozling the panel by lying. Sure Elizabeth Montgomery could, hypothetically speaking, convince the panel she was Queen Elizabeth by lying, but the panel is blindfolded, so what's the sport in that? The panel was so peeved by this that they referred to it for months after: when Dorothy Kilgallen appeared as a mystery guest five months later she said, "John will let Danny Kaye lie, but not me."
soulierinvestments 3 years ago
The funniest thing to me is Tony Randall's laugh.
kirkba 3 years ago
Oooh yes -- crackup. and Dorothy's laugh as well. Double crack up. I do not understand what they find so darned funny about Bennett's question, which leads me to wonder what the two of them imbibed before the broadcast.
soulierinvestments 3 years ago
I believe Randall starts laughing when Cerf starts to ask if the guest has brothers, alluding to Harpo Marx (because Kaye wasn't talking).
slc2466 3 years ago
Evidently when Tony eliminated Jack Lemmon, he and Dorothy both began thinking, "Who do we know ... who is it that wouldn't speak and is a comedian?" Harpo Marx was famous for not saying a word in the Marx brothers' films and obviously both Tony and Dorothy had the same idea at the same time as Bennett did when he posed his question about working with famous brothers. So they both collapsed in laughter over the coincidence.
