Hey Brokenjax, Do you still use your Hackintosh 6 months after completing the build? Have you encounter any unexpected problems, be it hardware or software, stability issues etc. Just curious to hear from your experience. Thanks
It's still going strong. No issues. I still have not updated to 10.6.3. I have been using it for a lot of projects and didn't want to risk breaking the OS in the middle of it. I would love to get it all updated and run it in 64 bit, I just haven't had the time.
Hi again brokenjax.. Please tell me, did you use any extra packages, kexts, efi strings or other black magik to get your 4870 running? or was it as easy as install the OS and your there? Has it been screwy with updates? If it was easy im considering getting one then buying a second cheap nvidia card as a "just in case" card.. What do you think?
everyone i talk to is telling me that ATI cards are crap, compared to the the GTX line from, Nvidia. I can still find some 4870 and 4890 cards, and think this may be a good choice to use for my hack. any problems at all you can see for me to use this as opossed to Nvidia. I dont use this computer for any games, mainly HD streaming and editing. let me know
Yeah, you'll get that from both camps. I chose ATI because of what apple offers as an upgrade on the Mac Pro. I also chose ATI because of my perceived stability issue with Apple Motion. I knew of one guy who was building a similar rig with an Nvidia card and he had loads of problems. It depends. You will have problems either way. I kind of wish I had chosen an Nvidia card in hindsight because I am triple booting with Linux and Win 7. Linux likes... continued
Nvidia better than ATI and I have to do a few workarounds to get blender 3d to behave.I use Blender on linux because I'm running 64 bit and need to address all the memory when doing fluid simulations. On Mac side, it works perfect and Motion is stable. So if you go Nvidia route, make sure you know which kexts etc. are required. I'm a noob so I used someone's extra folder so I didn't have to do any tweaking. There will be frustrating moments, and unfortunately this hasn't been an exact science
@flynreelow Unfortunately, I started doing some real work on this machine, and didn't want to break anything in mid-project. I have not looked into getting sleep working or full 64-bit. I'd love to get 64-bit working. Just a matter of sifting through all the posts on insanely mac. I might just buy another hard drive and reload everything on that for a test rig...time allowing.
once again.. thanks for the great help. i will be starting this project very soon, and with lifehacker tutorial and extra folder, and all of your help, i think it will be a breeze. your video card seems like a good bang for the buck, especially for the price. why did you chose that over an Nvidia card. Is this ATI just as good. I love the 1gig, and I need dual DVIs as well. let me know..and to get quarts extreme working, was it just a new plist line? seems pretty easy?
I chose the ATI card because that was the card offered on a real Mac pro as the upgrade. I actually prefer nvidia because of it's compatibilty with linux. I do a lot of blender 3d in linux, and the the ATI card was hard to set up in ubuntu.

@sani98
Actually I was using Quicktime X to do screen recording, which is included in Snow Leopard.

any problems with Dual Monitors
flynreelow 2 years ago
Not at all, dual monitors is what I have. Have you been able to find a 4870? last time I checked, they seemed to vanish from the earth.

Hey dude..
Sorry to bug you if your busy,
But i'm very interested in your board for my build..
The sleep issue..
Is it a case of it goes into sleep mode and then wont wake up? (ie hard drives spin, fans kick in but no video)
Everyclouddan 2 years ago
@Everyclouddan
I never ever put it to sleep, but from what my research tells me, yes it will not wake up. Don't know whether it's just video or not.
