  • I love when drummers play variations of this fill.

  • What messure of tom's do you have?

  • can u tell what's the pattern? i can't figure it out/. plssS??? thank you

  • @metalheadsilay (KEY- bass drum:B/Snare:S/Hihat:H/Ride:R) > i've got it as

BSH BRS BHS in triplet format i.e. 1 is a 2 is a 3 is a 4 is a (with the '4 is a' being a return to the start of the pattern i.e BSH BRS BHS BSH etc etc .

    hope that helps (Y)

  • @brightsidejim71 hey! thank you very much dude.. =)

  • seriously, best licks, best patterns, best drummings AND the best faces! haha! great

  • seriously, very cool lick!!!

  • Nice hat

  • you talk too much, me no gusta -.-

  • ....

  • 4:49 ...let me first try to comprehend your ability to even do just THAT before i try this on the drums...

  • You look a bit like Neal Peart.

  • do a video of the simple yet effective R L bass R L Bass (R on floor tom and L on high tom/middle tom) That is another triplet felt groove/fill that ALOT of people have trouble with, I don't (anymore) But i'm curious to your perspective of working on that fill.

  • Very cool fill. Thanks a lot, Randy!

  • @vansdrumming

i am a young drummer and i have loved triplets eversince my drum tacher taught me bonhams, i love all your videos bu this one really caught my attention, absolutly love it.

i find your placement of your cowbell interesting i have one clamped onto my high hat and another mounted on my bass drum, what kind of feel do you get when it's up there??

  • That Cowbell is in perfect focus ;)

  • Are there any good tips to improving triplet speeds? I can do it slowly, but as soon as i start to pick up speed, i just end up doing the base drum on the second hit, instead of after it.

  • @FireflyIII Don't pick up speed until you are sure you have got it. If you have a a metronome set it on triplets and play along. You'll get there. It takes a lot of time. RVP

  • hes right if you want to get it solid dont rush it. If you get it in less than a week well then ur a good drummer ino me it will prolly take 2 weeks.

  • WOW

wicked snare sound, it sounds like a rocket howd you do it? is it just the mics?

  • Great stuff man.

  • omg sick :0

  • That cowbell is huge!

  • This was very helpful

  • haha 'or you could look real stupid like that' lol nice fill, its so fun to use! thanx!

  • Nice groove Vandrumming and triplet idea there.

May I suggest holding the sticks further up in a more natural place.. you look tense physically, not allowing for enough rebound from the sticks naturally and it is hindering the flow and feel of what you are doing.

4:55 is a great example, 7:30 also. lifting the sticks instead of naturally pushing your hand down and catching the stick with your hand (dribbling), stick already in up position on the catch.

  • @PositivelyBored I've never played the drums, yet the first thing I thought was I'm sure the way he's holding those sticks couldn't be better, it doesn't look like it would feel comfortable.

  • Hey Van, what software do you use to merge the audio/video?

  • After years of wanting a drum kit, now at 40 I got one, and your clips have really helped me get a good start, cheers mate, KEEP ON ROCKIN

  • it would help to tell us what he is actually doing rather than being like "ok watch this".

van, youre my dude but that was a biggy here because im so down to learn this fill

  • Comment removed

  • @maxisslipknot sounds like it's out of tune

i hit the bottom of my toms to compare sound to the top to get the sound i like

also you may need deadringers that helps with it

  • @BSswagg thanx man what are dead ringers

  • @maxisslipknot they make it so it doesn't carry out so much sound they are just little tiny circle pieces of plastc

will only cost you a few bucks

  • thats an awsome beat man

  • dang i've been drumming for about 3 years and i'm in eighth grade, and I'm supposedly good for my age and playing time. I'm nothing compared to this lol

  • WTF I have played drums for many years and I still have trouble putting this together! Some of us just suck and have to really work hard to do anything. Anyway, it's a challenge and that's the whole idea, I guess.

  • I'm definitely using this one. Good Job.

  • linear drumming

  • What do you guys think of the Pearl Forum FZ drum kit?

  • you speak too much play more please

  • I bet this would sound really nice if you put a tom and a splash in there as well.. Ima have to work on this one tonight... Great lick

  • the Reverand is better!!!

  • @ace1425 hes dead,

  • I have a question please!

Your ride sounds so good, what is it?

I'm really looking for something with that exact tone..

How many inches? If it's custom and/or insanely expensive, how should I go about getting a ride with that similar sound? Any key words or brands I should look into?

    Really appreciate it

    David

  • Very nice men. Carlos de Argentina

  • You are a wicked player dude!!! Love you triplet stuff. Triplets rule!!!

  • Subscribed!!! So awesome!

  • One thing I noticed with this fill is that it would be really cool to mod it from being a 16 note triplet form to a 9:2 rhythm (9 sixteenth notes per 2 quarter notes), and accent the drag triplets that are within the 9:2. Cool thing about doing that is that the tempo can be faster for the groove, and you won't be speeding too fast.

  • 6:39 - 6:41 such a drummer moment =p

i love having those wee moments in a jam or when im practicing =p

  • sound proof panels are easy to make yourself and cheap

  • This is almost as good as Expert Village's drum stuff

  • @zzzzzzzzzz202 ORLY

  • i just cant grab what to play, i keep playing it over and over, i thinks it my a d d or something. But i like how in one of your videos you explained what drum to hit one after another, i just cant follow for some reason and im getting so aggravated lol

  • its tight dude

  • dude, you talk waaaaay too much.

  • Diggin the hat.

  • loven that hat !

  • havent watched these in a minute. Van thanks. This lesson was perfect

  • haha you sound like vince vaughn. nice drumming though.

  • Hahahah your so right! He sounds just like him

  • DUDE! These new videos are awesome... ive been playing to them on my iphone all day!! you should make an Iphone app... I litterally havent been off this bus since line call this morning

  • Am I right in thinking that one round(couldn't think of a better word) of this fill is 3 beats long and you are playing in 4/4 time?

    Mitch

  • That's what makes it sound so cool and it's easy! RVP

  • @vansdrumming hey Randy i think your a good teacher check out my drum videos, how old are you and how many years of drumming..

  • @mitchrich6 congratulations

  • don't really like this lick that much

    vanzdrumming com

  • Bahaha, did you really just spam your own video?

  • @vansdrumming Hey Van, what's that pattern. Bass, snare, HH, Bass, Ride, Snare???

  • So what's the pattern to this bad boy. kick, snare, HH, kick, ride, snare, kick ???

  • its all good because the people talking shit about Randy arent getting paid like Randy to play drums so obviously theres a correlation there. "u totally suck"

  • I meant Randy not Van lol didn't know your first name was Randy Sorry. =/

  • That's cool. Everyone calls me VAN. RVP

  • Van your awesome, i love your lessons, keep them coming, if i could i would pay you to teach me.

  • How does hitting the bell constitute totally messing up? I hit it and it sounded cool, therefore I stopped and explained that you can try it on the bell. Not sure I understand your comment. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Dude, why are you being a douche? I've just seen your video and think that you should really improve your timing and stop picking on proffesionals. Because terms "u fucking suck at drums" and "you totally messed up" could be EASILY used as comments under your video. People are just not as rude as you to use them.

  • Thank you. What are you doing to help the drumming community? RVP

  • sorry:(you are a very good teacher the best on youtube but there getting worse thas all:(

  • Exactly, Randy,

If you guys don't have any thing nice to say, just don't say anything. Why do you feel you need to try and put down someone who is a drumming guru and has taught even seasoned drummers as myself some great stuff. Keep Rockin Randy

  • This has that "Roseanna" feel to it. I think that was Toto.

  • whats the pattern?

  • I believe it is RLK (x3) with the right hand going from accented snare to ride to hats when he plays it as a fill. The left hand notes are all grace notes. As the whole pattern is nine 16th note triplets long play it twice through and then RLKRLK (to make up the full 24 notes of a 16th note triplet bar). I hope this helps.

  • think it's actually KRL

  • RLK=1&a... start on the A....then continue with 1&a 2&2 3&a.......u can do anything u want though.

  • I have to learn this. nice nice

  • people who say bro are retards : )

  • You just said it.. ^^

  • ill give u that one, just one

  • Hahaha, you shouldn't, it was very childish xD

  • i know bro

  • i always try to do my homework and end up at my kit working with your awesome tips and lessons. you have insane chops as well as being an insane teacher.

    thanks!!

  • did they pay u to advertize those sound proof things?

  • No... but they are a local company I do business with and I felt they deserve the plug. They did a great job on them and everyone is always asking my what kind of sound reinforcement I use. RVP

  • Are the sound panels for acoustics or soundproofing?

  • Both, but more for acoustics. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • omg 6:38 was awesome lol. gr8 vid i love it

  • Sounds great bro, would have been nice if you could have slowed it down a tad more and said aloud what you are hitting on the triplet, IE: snare, BD, FT etc. I am still new to this so sorry for the bad terminology but is the pattern a 3 note pattern like 1-trip-let that is repeated 8 times or is it a 6 note pattern like 1-trip-let-and-trip-let that is repeated 4 times?

  • depends on which way you want to look at it, this particular fill is snare, hat, foot, ride, snare, foot, hat, snare, foot lol so yeah 3 notes played 8 times sounds good!!

  • music to my ears man i love your sound X3

  • Little mistake at 6:54. Anyone agree?

  • Yup, but notice I left it on the video unlike other teachers that edit the crap out of their videos so they sound perfect. Know one is perfect. I'm not. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • Fair enough. You seem to be a great drummer, just caught me off guard when i saw the little mistake.

  • Hey... I was winging the lesson! Kinda pulled it out of my butt. RVP

    vanzdrumming com

  • you mean no one is perfect. yeah, i know, you already said you're not. lol

  • hey Randy! I just bought your DVD. i can't wait. :) I hope this will help push further into my passion which is drumming whoot.

  • What snare is that?

    What heads are you using?

    I'm soooo jelous!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 2:05 - "work at it, work at it, work at it"

you even speak in triplets! haha

great lesson, and i love the sound in the vault!

  • Haha that's awesome!

  • How much does that snare cost ? ;]

  • yea dude your snare is killing me. im jealous.

  • What is the exact sticking/foot pattern you're playing on that fill? Can you break it down?

  • ha the end thing playing the lone ranger theme that was kewl nice fill to

  • 3:43

    Damn!That sounds awesome!!!

  • yea i peeped that as well lol it was a nice lil add in :)

  • how do u pla hat beat?

    vanzdrumming com

  • Nice fill, nice snare sound.

  • Comment removed

  • do a hand over hand lesson

  • man the sound its KILLER

  • That's a cool pattern there, reminds me of some Bill Bruford type fills.

  • i agree the volume on these new videos is like what happens to your tv when 24 comes back on after a commercial break

  • HAHA dude i watched every season of 24 i know EXACTLY what youre talking about

  • Randy, this is the second new video in a row that I've had to turn my volume up all the way to hear. I have noticed I am not the only person with this problem. It would be great if you could turn it up a few db's.

Awesome fill btw, I can't wait to use it.

  • I think it is fine. Sounds good!

  • Great job, Randy, as always. I've been looking for a long time for a drummer who could pass along loads of cool fills. You da' man.

  • haha, my drum set teacher was actually showing me some more of those 16th note triplet fills today :) awesome lesson- what kind of microphones do you use?

  • If u could move ur cowbell it would b nice. cool fill.

  • Guys... it's a very simple pattern that is repeated. The sticking repeats itself over and over. I didn't think I would need to write out such an easy pattern. I also tried to play it really slow for you all. Bass Drum RL, Bass Drum RL, Bass Drum RL, Bass Drum RL.

  • u shude say what ur gonna hit before u actually do the fill

  • Randy, First off thanks for the great lessons you provide. If I could make a small suggestion (take it or leave it) could you perhaps type out the hand pattern you are using? (maybe in the "more info" section or something) sometimes your ghost notes are so... ghosty that it's hard to tell what you're hitting. I watched the video a couple of times and got it but a LLRRLL might make things easier. Regardless... you rock!!

  • AGREED, it took me like 20 minutes to figure it out..

  • Great fill, im trying to get faster wrist motions instead of using my fingers what should i use to help practice?

  • if you keep calling your grooves big and tasty, you will have to start plugging mac donalds in your vids! very nice fill though, i like it

  • Hey... maybe I'll pick up an endorsement. Or get sued. Ha Ha.

Actually, after my first Tasty fill video a Vaniac YouTuber told me to call the next one a Big Tasy fill. So I did.
