Jimmy Carter (Democrat) 40,828,929 297 50.1% 23 states won, Gerald Ford (Republican) 39,148,940 240 48.0% 27 states won- Carter blew a 33 point lead, but held on to a narrow victory. Last Democratic Presidential candidate to have widespread success in the south.
Looking back in history i can say that Jimmy Carter was not a bad president, he was just unprepared to deal with the problems of the Johnson and Nixon administrations involving the war! Johnson was the greatest president in the world but after his departure Nixon took over and made things worst and then Ford took over and made things worst! The 1970s were a result of decades of bad and high spending, corroption and public debt, so Carter cannot be blamed for such problems of the time or now!
Carter couldnt get anything through congress,he ruined detente with Soviet Union
Nixon would be known as a very good president for his success in foriegn relationships, but he was paranoid of not being reelected thus the Watergate break-in, Carter reminds me of Mr. Rogers, but im only 16 so wat do i kno, im annoyed by democrats writing long paragraphs trying to sound smart on youtube
I am sorry if i offend you but that is my personal opinion, i have to give carter some credit where it's due! As far as me being a democrat that is false, althought i am a far - left person, that's completely different from being a comformist democrat! It's too bad you're pissed about me writing long paragraphs but you took the time to read it and comment on it so i guess i am making my point clear!
Johnson was a Democrat. Nixon inherited the Vietnam war from his predecessor. He could not simply walk out of that war! But Johnson was a far better president as J.E. Carter because he knew how congress worked. Carter did not how to deal with congress due of his own stubborness. The world still pays a high price of his way of dealing with Iran in the late 1970's. His weak foreign policy lead to an Ayatollah regime in Iran. Thanks James Earl!!!!! Worst democratic president ever!
Johnson (Hey hey LBJ how many kids did you kill today?- the great society/greater welfare state-) was the greatest President in the World? You're HIGH as a kite. Lay off the drugs. He was one of the WORST. A bigger facist then anybody from Bushco. moron.
Great man, who still to this day does many good things for a lot of people. Not the least of these being Habitat for Humanity. However, as a president he was an utter failure. Thank god, for Ronald Reagan!
Really???? You miss double diget inflation? You miss 10% unemployment rates. You miss a weakend military? You miss higher taxes? You miss gas lines? You miss Americans being held hostage in Iran for 444 days?
I was 10 years old when Carter left office. What I most remember was his face was the epitome of failure.
The high unemployment rate was due to rampant inflation.
The double digit inflation was due to mismanaged foreign policy, which stemmed back before Carter was in office, and compounded by the debt load that was incurred by the Vietnam war.
The hostage crisis in Iran was the direct result of Carter's refusal to see how bad the situation in Iran was.
It's true that inflation lowered when Reagan policies were implemented, but we had a recession in '82, and then '83 - '90 we had a break. '91 - '92, maybe early '93 we had aother recession, and it was from continuing Reagan's policies of high spending and low taxing, for the buisnesses and the 1% of the wealthiest Americans. So I don't think Reagan's cure was the best, better than Carter's but not great.

Really? Then can you please take a look at how the economy was doing then?
KabaneTheChristian 3 years ago
Carter's economic troubles were the fault of Lyndon Johnson's warantless spending in Vietnam.
RedStateProgressive 3 years ago
Johnson had been out of office for eight years when Carter became president. Carter's economic troubles were the result of his own economic policy.

President Lyndon Baines Johnson Had Been Out Of Office For 8 Years But He Had Also Been Dead For 4 Years As Well.

man it wasn't all his fault. if you blame carter for the late 70s, then blame hoover for the depression.

The depression darn well was Hoover's fault! What did Hoover do? He raised taxes to 80% top! Not so different from what Carter did, eh?
