  • Who could possibly do more justice to this song than Vestal----I love the Happy Goodman's!!!

  • one of the all time gospel groups, these so called gospel singers today has a long way to go

  • This will always be Vestal's signature song.

  • anybody else think the steel guitar player looks like a Jonas Brother?

  • The real question is, are only Pentecostal and Apostolic people gonna be the only people who go to heaven like ya'll teach? You all turn many away because they don't look or dress like ya; ain't that the same way the Pharisees were?

  • @duckysmith1 The answer to your question is, Christians Only! That is who will be in heaven. No other name under heaven by which men must be saved!

  • @duckysmith1 they dress that way for its bible teaching, pharisees has nothing to do with it bud

  • she used to have this very soft voice one day she just belted out amazing voice came out they talk about it in the tribute to the goodmens video

  • I still say the older Vestal got, the better she sang. Wow - what a voice. There is no doubt in my mind, they not only sang and preached the Word of God on stage, but they also lived it, on and or off the stage. Vestal was hated by many singers, when, I believe it was around the 1950's, when Vestal said: If you are not out there singing for Jesus, then you need to quit singing. (Christian music of course). That was not the exact words of Vestal, but that was close enough.

  • The Goodmans, singing, blesses my inner-most being.! I feel joy and a warmth that i dont feel with just any singing.

  • I am an unwavering atheist, but Vestal had one of the best voices of any singer in any genre. She was brilliant.

  • @bottledsoul I mean this with the utmost respect ,so please don't be offended but you truely don't know of the joy and peace that you are missing, God really is real, and he allows his children to feel his presence, he pours it over them like honey, there is nothing to compare it to, I know cause I tried for years to fill up the void within me with every thing else, I pray that someday you will count yourself worthy to experience God's love for you.

  • This song always touches my heart it means something to me

  • Good music

  • I am the Shepherd and the sheep know my voice. Aren't you glad He's out there on the dark hills? I've been out there and its terrible place to be alone.

  • I love this song!!!!!!!!!!111

  • Awesome song! :)

  • Truly a gifted lady. No one will ever sing this song like Vestal Goodman. She's singing in Heaven's choir now and re-united with her sweetheart, Howard. Heavens gain is our loss. We love and miss you, Vestal. RIP

I just don't get how 2 people can 'dislike' this.

  • This Is Such A Good Song :)

  • just gotta luv Vestal...she's a singing angel in heaven now :)

  • Libby from The Perrys sings the second best version of this song. Noone can do it like Vestal but Libby comes in at a VERY close second.

  • Most of Alabama, was tore asunder by Tornadic Activity, yesterday April 27th, 2011, I personally want to Dedicate this song, to each and everyone Alabamian and to let them know God is walking with them in Their Darkest Hour and Their Darkest Needs!!!!

  • My aunt would sing this song in the little country church and her voice would resonate off the walls of the sanctuary I'd love to go back to those times and hear my Uncle preach the word again but that's not possible he passed away in October 2010.

  • Love this song and this lady sang it like no one else

  • from alabama she the best!!!!!!!! i will always love her!

  • From Sardis, Alabama; the sweetest voice I have ever heard. I miss you Vestal. I miss "All Night Singings"

  • GLORY!

  • Hear the joy in her voice as she spreads the Gospel, then she almost comes to tears as she is overcome once again with the realization of the depth of God's gift to us -- all while witnessing to us in song! Beautiful.

  • Unstoppable Force.... So blessed to have grown up with their music and seeing them in Central Texas Church Concerts.... One of the Greatest Gospel Groups ever heard or ever will hear:-))

  • Excellent!!! Wonderful!! Brilliant! Thank you for sharing this one!!--Lee

  • Look at Vestal's hair!!!! :O The singing is wonderful. But that hair? That must have taken a whole box of bobby pins! Unless it's a wig...

  • @DuchessofTitanic

Vestal has a book, and in it she talks about how her beehive was a hairpiece over her real hair. Not ALL the time she has big hair, but I'm pretty sure when it's this big it's the hairpiece.

  • @CalvaryRidge Well thats the pentacostal way. lol

  • I'm so glad someone posted this! I've been looking for this song, but I didn't know who sang it. I kept thinking that the song, God walks these hills was the one I was wanting. I was so frustrated. Thanks for bringing back this song from my childhood.

  • GLORY!!!

  • Those were the days, real musicians! I'm so sick of "band in a can" modern day gospel music, reminds me of karaoke night without the video monitors!

  • @minimumheadroom I agree with you the "can bands" take away some of the spirit away from the music. As a musician myself I feel that we should make the music ourselves not ride someone else's work. However I can understand some of the smaller "local" groups using "can bands" to a point. I say this because some groups just can't afford a band. I enjoy the music more when I play.

  • Wonderful. Perhaps unmatchable as performed here, but i love Iris DeMent's version more myself somehow.

  • I love Gospel music

  • I saw this wonderful lady when I lived in North Carolina. She and her family were true messengers of The Gospel.

  • god walks the dark hills happy Goodman

  • Does anyone know why Howard wasn't singing with them?

  • Though I love Vestal and many of her songs, this has to be in my top two song of hers. No one can sing this like Vestal, this and her beautiful song "Til The Storm Passes By have been my inspiration during some very tough and sad times in my life. Watching this video of Vestal younger was wonderful, thank you for sharing.

  • My favorite from Vestal:)

  • vestal and i sang together in the old days on a few dates, she is missed by all of us who knew her. no one sang it like her. everytime i sing i think of my old friend.

i miss you vestal, lottie june

  • One of the greatest southern gospel songs ever !

  • One morning when I woke up, I looked out my bedroom window, And their tour bus was stuck in my Grandmas front yard in northern Ky. What a time those days were for a little boy. I love you Mama Vestel...

  • It is time for these old songs to make a come back. This is what I was raised up on in Minto, Alaska. It's time for a revolution in the church. Make old things new again.

  • I grew up listening to her!!! What a blessing their songs are☺

  • Can't nobody sing this like Vestal.

  • If things are going rough... this song uplifts and restores. Thanks be to God.

  • Wow, I can remember hearing this on the television as a child. It's a wonderful treasure of a heritage that my family was a part of. Thank you for sharing it - I enjoyed the memory.

  • In Louisville kentucky after a singing convention there with the Inspirations and the Goodman 1960 somthing at her bus, I watched as Vestal removed the wig she was wearing on her head!!!! WAS not her real hair!! I am not trying to belittle her I loved Vestal!!!

  • Excellent early rendition!

  • Wooah look at that hair!!! lol Ahhh still luv ya Vestal!

  • I'm sure I'm not the first person to say this, but she IS the original Marge Simpson, hairwise.

  • Thats what my grams called a PhD (pentecostal hari-do) most women in those days wore their hair that way.

  • As a Pentecostal pastor I saw a lot of grievous events invade the lives of people who would live the simple life of faith. This song and Vestal's voice carried many people ....over the mountains and through the valleys.

    Thank you

  • Howard Goodman was a Pentecostal minister and in those days the sisters in the church wouldn't wear makeup, pants or cut their hair. So Vestal had to pile her hair up to do something with it! I remember those days in Pentecost. We brothers wore black suits with no watches, cufflinks or rings other than our wedding ring and the sisters usually wore long-sleeved dresses down to the floor. It was to honor Christ by dressing to cover the body. Sure had the anointing in those days!
  • Yes, and What happened? The love that used to be is now gone!!! LOOK UP PEOPLE THIS TIME IS MUCH DIFFERENT!!! HE WILL BE HERE SOON!! LAST WARNING!!!!

  • I've only heard one other woman that comes anywhere near to this woman singing this song and that woman is my mother..I'm not saying that just because she's my mother. She makes me cry everytime I hear her sing it.

  • This song has always brought back vivid memories of my young days up in the WV hills. I worked at a mountaintop power plant and rode with a friend. I would ride to his farm and walk the last mile or so to my place across the high pasture. In the winter it would be dark and windy and the moon would make shadows on the crusted snow. There were no other houses through there and it was quite lonely. But this song would always comfort me, as I thought about God walking those dark hills.
  • He was there with you pal.. And the steps that were the hardest ones to make, he was carrying you..

  • brother he was right beside you every step of the way

  • @4freespeech There's something about your comment that I find very fascinating. You must've lived an interesting live, sir. God bless.

  • @an0nim0uz We lived just about 30 miles south of the Oh. line and it was a good stopping point for them and the Inspirations on their rounds back south. Grandma "put on the dog", So they'd get a good home cooked meal. I really miss those days.

  • love the hair!!!

  • This music reminds me of being in church when I was a little boy and the people shouting and praising God. When the church had power and fire. I'm only 35 so that shows how much of the world has come in to churches. I long for those days again but I fear the next time we experience that kind of worship will be when we stand before the Throne of God! Pray for our lost that they will be there with us!!

  • jesus loves the sinner, and he died for you and me,he knows a mans heart. wake up churches. the sinners are in the highways and byways

  • dose anyone know the name of the piano player in this video ??

  • Eddie Crook.

  • @adkinsda could you post the lyrics in the info box please?? i would really appreciate it

  • Love the hairdo!

  • I am glad God walks with me in the Holy

Spirit. What a lovely song. Their song ministry has blessed and been a help to me for years. Thanks Vestel, see you soon.

  • GREAT song; five stars! I LOVE the HGF!! Now they sing in Heaven's Choir! Such a great loss for southern gospel fans and gospel music, in general!

  • i've been listening to the goodmans since the late 60's and i never ger tired of there music. vestal without a doubt is singing for the lord in heaven. her voice is angelic.

  • I'm not even a Christian...but I LOVE Vestal Goodman. This lady can sing...doesn't matter what she's singing about. That being said...you can feel, see and hear the love she has for her God in that angelic voice. Rest easy Vestal...we love you!

  • it doesnt matter what you wear or what you look like you are hear to priase the lord anyway you can if you cant do nothing but point stuff out that worng then somhing s wrong woth you

  • John the Baptist said You will know them by the fruits they bear. What tree do you know that bears fruit inside, instead of outward on the branches?

  • your convictions on everyone else! Leave Vestal and everyone else alone!!

  • The comment made below by this TERRIGUITAR is horrible! Your so close minded and that comment is what pushes people away from God and church.. That comment is exactly why I dont go to church anymore bcuz of people like you!! They dont keep their Big mouths shut! I am backslider (which not proud of ) but people like you keep me and others from going. You need to hit the alter and pray thru and ask God to give you knowledge and wisdom and to stop condemning people and pushing

  • God walks the dark hills for you and me. LOVE THIS SONG

  • I was born in a little village in Alaska my dad grew me up on this music. So it really touches my heart.

  • I'm so glad God walks beside me each and everyday in both good and bad times. He saved my soul when I was around 6 years old and I am now 44. It is my hope that through this blessed song people will come to know this wonderful savior JESUS CHRIST. God bless you all...

  • thank you so much adkinsda

  • no one could sing it any better...thanks for sharing...God is so good and He still walks the dark hills of our fallen America...lets all join in a pray for our Country...we need an ole fashion revival

  • What is wrong with dressy flashy. She was still a lady. Everyone needs some fixing up & some color. Stop judging. Her music was annointed & I miss her.

  • Vestal prayed form Jake Hess shortly before he die,She also whispered in his ear something personal. I saw her go into the crowd at LARGE Auditoriums praying for people and speaking in tongues. LEAVE her alone!.I bet Jesus would get ran down by you for not dressing to please your type. People like you have done more damage to People trying to do good who you run down,My little brother started drinking after a verbal attack by someone like you, AMEN Sister spread the gospel RIGHT?

  • And your intolerance of Christians who believe in old-fashioned standards is just as bad as what you accuse her of. Why don't you reach out instead of denigrating her? God bless the Goodman family for what they did for the Kingdom, and for gospel music.

  • the goodman's, hinson's, and the kingsman are all my favs

  • I just love how Mrs. Vestal lets go, and she just lets JESUS take over!!!!!! Glory, Glory, HALLELUJAH!!!!!! :-) PRAISE THE LORD!!! GOD DOES WALK THE DARK HILLS JUST TO SHOW US THE WAY!!!!!!!!!! :-) HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH!!!!!!

  • The way she song this song, you can almost see Jesus walking.

  • Of all the people i have ever worked with Vestal is the most incrediable souls who ever graced a stage. Thanks for the video and the memories of just how talented she really was.

She had that amazing ablity to beam love for all down a wire to the people.

  • I used to go their church right here in my hometown. Such dedication and the singing was awesome.

  • This Lady was a true christian She is truly singing with the angels and her beloved husband Howard, probably rusty ans Sam too< thank You!!!, is this a REALLY Young Curly Chalker on steel??

  • Now THIS is singing for the Lord.

  • Please put more of Vestal and The Goodmans on, there still the Greatest, even though there singing in Heaven, there Music still Moves People of Faith

  • In her autobiography. She said the beehive part was a wig.

  • Look at that holiness hairdo! I love to see the old pictures of these women before they cut off their hair.

  • This was the song that they did at my Mom's funeral. I almost cried when I heard it again.

  • I hope they play this at my funeral.

  • One of the most beautiful southern gospel songs, and no one can sing it like the Happy Goodman Family. Of course, no one can top the Goodmans in any of their songs!

  • @bus08001 I don't think the Goodmans were so great of singers as they were sincere Christians. I met Vestal twice and Howard once. What a powerful speaker she was and emissary for Christ and the Gospel.

  • Great Vesal Goodman pefectandamazing

  • THis song moves me greatly. I just love it
