Great job.Although I heard all this music as a kid, I praised Geddy Lee and learned from him in the late 70's.Now when I hear this I think what an idiot I was to miss the soul and genius of basslines like these back then. But its never too late to learn it.!!!!
Are you playing in a band? - You should. There aren't too many players out there who can handle Jamerson stuff.
I've spent many years perfecting his basslines and I get asked to play with a lot of soulbands here in Melbourne, Australia. Especially now when Motown is really popular again here.
I have to agree with BrilliantBeing. This style is a lost one unless some one is using a back track for rap.VEry nice playing and keeping the style alive
Just checking in Jamersonshook. I hope all is well for you. You are doing a great service to young bassists everywhere. This type of groove is a lost art; even among today's black neo-soul musicians. You keep it alive with your posts.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting all of these inspirational Jamerson lines. You play them superbly! For the first time in my life I can clearly hear these gems. God bless you!
Its really nice to see you playing the way Jamerson originally played, using "the hook". So many other videos people have made of his basslines have them playing with all the other fingers also. There's a special sound you get when you only use one finger, when that's all you have to work with, and that's so much of what made his playing so unique. Great job!
nice playing dude. even the choice of notes differs when using just one finger. just like how most of jamerson's lick moves down cos he has to rake it.
"The hook" is the name James Jamerson gave to his 1st finger on his right hand, most bass players use more fingers (+ thumb of course) but JJ only used the hook.
@jamersonshook As A amateur bass player i am impressed as hell with this video.

Are those LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats you got on that P there?
sc2man13 3 years ago
Yes indeed!
jamersonshook 3 years ago
I love those things so much, I put them on my fretless, eventually I would want a P-Bass to put them on, including the pickup cover.
Anyway, PHENOMENAL playing man! You nailed it, tone and all. I truly enjoy watching your videos, keep up the good work!
sc2man13 3 years ago
Very jamersonish. I know this bassline too and I think it's really fun to play, although I'm playing with 2 fingers unlike you. Keep it up.

Thanks - that's right about the different sound, it's very hard to get it to sound right with 2 or more fingers IMHO...

"The hook" is the name James Jamerson gave to his 1st finger on his right hand, most bass players use more fingers (+ thumb of course) but JJ only used the hook.

lol i bet u got this from Dr Licks book
kigger622 4 years ago
That's a great book! I didn't use it for this though. Hope it's not much different, Dr. Licks is a hero for his fantastic work on Jamerson.
jamersonshook 4 years ago
Glad I'm not the only one still using the hook! Keep it real.
mindbodylightsound10 4 years ago
would you mind sending me the tabs on thi great song? the hook of the song is hard as hell 4 me. thanks in advance.
PatMan422 4 years ago
Sorry - I don't use tabs, but if there's a bit on the original you're stuck on I might be able help with another vid.
jamersonshook 4 years ago
James Jamerson played so many riffs and hooks using "the hook". Hell, I still have trouble playing his shit w/2 fingers. Good job on this classic.
PatMan422 4 years ago
Thanks - the big "secret" is that it's easier to learn/play them with one!
