  • @jamersonshook As A amateur bass player i am impressed as hell with this video.

  • Flats I'm sure!

    Round wound suks!

  • now i got !! big tune !! My bass is crying!!

  • fuck man i cant get the right notes!!

  • well done, im impressed, keep up the good work man

  • Great job.Although I heard all this music as a kid, I praised Geddy Lee and learned from him in the late 70's.Now when I hear this I think what an idiot I was to miss the soul and genius of basslines like these back then. But its never too late to learn it.!!!!

  • Dang.... What a sound..... In your fingers. Be proud.

  • man...you are doing James proud!

  • god i love when he drops that low-E bomb - on 3!! -- at the top of the first chorus.

my man, you have got it right as usual. rock on.

  • You honour Jamerson with this groove, thank you.

  • Oh, that sounds goooood

  • i like how you play jamerson lines with the 1 finger. thats how they should be played.

  • Are you playing in a band? - You should. There aren't too many players out there who can handle Jamerson stuff.

I've spent many years perfecting his basslines and I get asked to play with a lot of soulbands here in Melbourne, Australia. Especially now when Motown is really popular again here.

  • that's how a bass should compliment a song ;) just awesome

  • dude you are the shit

  • adds to the authenticity cuz you use one finger :)

  • just wonderful!! Bass line and your playing!

  • Oh so very good. I wish I played in a band with you. *****

  • can someone please give me a link to a tab of this? i've tried to learn it by ear, and even whatching this vid, but i still dont get it all..

  • wow!!! this looks and sounds just like James Jamersons bass......i think we have a suspect. jk lol

  • Your attention to detail is astonishing. That tone is to die for.

  • That's the TONE...the MAGIC!! Young bass players, PLEASE take notice of what bass is supposed to be...

  • @ROCKSTARCRANE what do young bass players "think" bass is supposed to sound like?

  • Awesome!!!! :D

  • You're amazing and I spend lots of time listening and watching you....thanks for all your vids.

  • you are a master, sir!

    keep up the funk

  • tight!!!

  • 5 stars

  • dude your badass!!! keep rockin

  • Good job bro!

  • Great job...

  • Thanks so much. I have been practising these beautiful bass lines while watching your video.... YOu are the BEST man. ;-)

  • man you got great single-finger technique!

  • man that's one finger twister!!

  • I have to agree with BrilliantBeing. This style is a lost one unless some one is using a back track for rap.VEry nice playing and keeping the style alive

  • really nice sound.!

  • Just checking in Jamersonshook. I hope all is well for you. You are doing a great service to young bassists everywhere. This type of groove is a lost art; even among today's black neo-soul musicians. You keep it alive with your posts.

  • peace bro

  • i give you props badass

  • Are those LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats you got on that P there?

  • Yes indeed!

  • I love those things so much, I put them on my fretless, eventually I would want a P-Bass to put them on, including the pickup cover.

Anyway, PHENOMENAL playing man! You nailed it, tone and all. I truly enjoy watching your videos, keep up the good work!

  • Very jamersonish. I know this bassline too and I think it's really fun to play, although I'm playing with 2 fingers unlike you. Keep it up.

  • what did you use o record the video ???

  • Now, you have to play Diana's version, which is, I must warn you, a friggin' marathon, especially at the end!!:)

  • :::rubbing hands together in anticipation!!:::

    Thumbs way up!!

  • Still my favorite version! Thanks!

  • My bass inspiration.

  • anyone besides james jamerson who calls their picking finger "the hook" or makes references to it in their videos is really cool. really.

  • youve got it down. i appreciate people who know who jamerson is. the uncredited bassist of all of these great records

  • Dear Mr. Hook...

Thank you SO MUCH for posting all of these inspirational Jamerson lines. You play them superbly! For the first time in my life I can clearly hear these gems. God bless you!

  • perfect!

  • The Hook!

  • play it my man......

  • Its really nice to see you playing the way Jamerson originally played, using "the hook". So many other videos people have made of his basslines have them playing with all the other fingers also. There's a special sound you get when you only use one finger, when that's all you have to work with, and that's so much of what made his playing so unique. Great job!

  • Thanks - that's right about the different sound, it's very hard to get it to sound right with 2 or more fingers IMHO...

  • nice playing dude. even the choice of notes differs when using just one finger. just like how most of jamerson's lick moves down cos he has to rake it.

  • You really have got it! My all time favourite Motown bass line is I'm Going To Make You Love Me especially the outro. Well done!

  • Cheers!

  • Great job! I'm learning this song for a birthday gig, and your video helps.

  • Cool stuff, but what is "the hook"?

  • "The hook" is the name James Jamerson gave to his 1st finger on his right hand, most bass players use more fingers (+ thumb of course) but JJ only used the hook.

  • lol i bet u got this from Dr Licks book

  • That's a great book! I didn't use it for this though. Hope it's not much different, Dr. Licks is a hero for his fantastic work on Jamerson.

  • Glad I'm not the only one still using the hook! Keep it real.

  • would you mind sending me the tabs on thi great song? the hook of the song is hard as hell 4 me. thanks in advance.

  • Sorry - I don't use tabs, but if there's a bit on the original you're stuck on I might be able help with another vid.

  • James Jamerson played so many riffs and hooks using "the hook". Hell, I still have trouble playing his shit w/2 fingers. Good job on this classic.

  • Thanks - the big "secret" is that it's easier to learn/play them with one!

  • ive seen enough im impressed you the man

  • Thanks! Jamerson was the man, of course, I'm the man who likes to show how amazing his stuff was.

  • I love it!!!!

  • Cheers - it's a great line ain't it!

  • nice. not bad at all

  • Cheers!
