....this would be funny.....if Cummings weren't so completely irrelevant today when you compare him to Lightfoot....its like someone at the CBC actually thought for a time that Burton Cummings would ultimately be remembered as being anything other than what he is today..........which in the context of this video...is awkward to think about.
@RobinsDynasty Burton Cummins will never be irrelevant. He is one of the 5 most recognized voices in Canadian music. You need to recognize that Burton was having a comedic moment and was not comparing himself to Gordon Lightfoot.
@RobinsDynasty - Burton Cummings is till today the ONLY Canadian artist who got 2 Stars on the Canada's Walk of Fame , besides that he also received the medal from The Order of Canada - So there ! sorry but you're wrong.
When Burton gets to the word "never" I just lose it...hysterical...thanks for the posting! Love ya America! rock on!...oh, and Caaan-A-Daa too! I mean that, it is a real country...no kidding...
Funny until Burton-as-Roy does Roy-doing-Gord-doing-Roy. By definition, things aren't funny after I shit my pants laughing, which usually happens between "the" and "lonely," and slide around in it causing permanent stains, which usually happens over "dum, dum, dum." Burt should get kickbacks from JcPenney.
@ApocalypsePlough When you wrote 3 or 4 songs that DEFINED a whole freakin decade... a decade that was the renaissance of popular music... and you wrote 3 or 4 of the most memorable songs of that decade... YOU ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE AN EGO THE SIZE OF WINNIPEG! Gordon had what, one? Sundown?
Besides, he's poking fun at Gordon Lightfoot's style of singing (monotoned, like Darius from Hootie & the Blowfish).
Don't get me wrong, GL's a great songwriter but BC is a better singer/songwriter overall.
@ericx777 - Canada Post put Gordon Lightfoot on a stamp. A STAMP.
He is also one of only 3 Canadian popular singer-songwriters to receive The Companion of the Order of Canada ..... Canada's highest civilian honour .. Joni Mitchell and Leonard being the other 2.
They wrote 3 or 4 songs that defined a whole freakin' generation ? Really ??..... there are few bands that have done that, like The Beatles. Please don't insult my intelligence and musical knowledge by putting Burton Cummings anywhere near them.
Gordon Lightfoot is one of Bob Dylan's favourite singer/songwriters.
@ApocalypsePlough After wasting my time as a Beatles fan for over 20 years I came to realize I had wasted my time. Between there dime-a-dozen hits and overpaid spin doctors they just plowed over a dozens of musicians more talented than them. If you want to go and research that do it yourself. There isn't and has never been the "greatest" of anything. It's all about being in the right place at the right time. And having a good publicist. It is a business not art.
@spacecowboy5000 - I am not a huge fan of The Beatles. You can't deny their influence, though. It wasn't so much their songs. It was the fact that they wrote them. They helped usher in the singer/songwriter era, along with people like Bob Dylan.
I do agree with you that there hasn't been a greatest of anything (only greatest country - America - because Americans keep telling me so). Music is subjective. Saying one band or singer is better than another is like saying red is better than green.
@ApocalypsePlough Ok... point taken but that's only because all three members of RUSH would not fit on a stamp!
One note, GL was CANADA's songwriter just like Hank Williams or Arlo Guthrie were American songwriters. I was thinking the bigger picture... worldwide. I believe the Guess Who had a bit more success in the international pop realm.
Who knew Burton Cummings was funny? This made me laugh so hard I cried. What a whopping dose of "Canadian Content." Burton Cummings and Gordon Lightfoot in one hilarious performance. Absolutely hilarious--Burton's impression is so spot on.
@BuxomDiva Me & Bobby Magee was actually first recorded by Roger Miller in 1969, then Gord and Kris both recorded it in 1970...Kris was predominantly a songwriter before he recorded himself! A timeless classic that has been recorded by many, and I have yet to hear a version I didn't like!
@mikeydfed Gordon did the first version of me and bobby magee thats what this sounds like its hard to sing like him because he has a jazz background and he puts those liitle jazz aproach notes in his melodys .
man he is so dead on with the orbsion and lightfoot voices. dont see to many music artist do that.

Sounds a little envious! Not an attractive quality. Focus on what you do well instead of mocking others for their success!

Burton Cummings WISHES he could be Gordon Lightfoot.
He has an ego the size of Winnipeg.
