  • Such a strong jump!! Beautiful horse.

  • that horse is a beauty!

  • My horse is a 'dangler' but shit he can't get air like that!! There's a gelding on the FEI and GCT circuits called Abberveil Van Het Dingleshoff *funny i know!!* and he has a gargantuan jump too. How much higher will future horses be able to go? 0.0

  • I can't believe these horses can jump so high and how amazing they are at jumping!! :)

  • I actually can't find my jaw!! I know it fell off somewhere...just not sure where...

  • three words. Oh My God!

  • I wish I had been old enough to see this on the tv when it first came out. I would have been hitting the floor with my jaw at that horse's powerful jump! Incredible!

  • @DJDangersJessiJane

Stay tuned... there was another horse at the same venue with power to challenge even his. Be on the lookout for "It's Otto," I plan to post videos about him soon/eventually.

His scope was near, if not on, Tomboy's level!

  • wow what for an amazing horse =O so powerfull ....sein blick so ehrgeizig!

  • Real high flyer with hang time.

  • They were always such fun to watch, Tomboy attacked his fences ferociously. What an amazing partnership. Thanks for posting, and Merry Christmas!

  • Ahaha love it! Dangly legs, silly pony.

  • WOW.

  • That horse doesn't even come close to grazing the jumps. That was amazing hahah

  • just perfect

  • extremely talented rider and horse. the rider probably took a lot of practice staying in balance with this horse. he's amazing!

  • wow he just glides over the jumps

  • This horse would be amazing to watch.

Every jump that he does, the crowd kind of goes 'wow'.

    Brilliant rider too!

  • WOW that must be so scary

  • Wahoooooo!

  • He looks like a bunny, hopping over those jumps like nothing!!! I love this horse.

  • Yes, this horse is amazing !!! But right now, even if he is getting old, I think Hickstead is the best from far !! (Go Canada Go) ! :D

  • @zab1cheval

Poor Hickstead. That said, this horse was retired before Hickstead was saddle-broken. ;)

  • I don't think the horse is enjoying it...

watch his feet and he lands, it made me squint my eyes how hard he lands.

And his ears are rarely forward. He tried his heart out in that round- it makes you think what horses actually do for us. He is a beautiful creature though :)

  • I dont think its that good for him to be jumping so powerfully. He lands on his feet very hard and he is getting very high up in the air.He is in the air longer than most of the horses ive seen and that can add up in the end even if its a milisecond longer that hes in the air and that can lose him the course. He is very beautiful though :)

  • Good god! That horse is a beast!

  • Ha ha .. I remember him so well.. massive jump, dodgy technique and his ears pinned back all the way. What a horse, I wouldnt have sat it over a cross pole! The pessoas are great trainers but would not be forcefull so if tomboy hadnt of wanted to jump.... he wouldnt have. And the riding was spot on .. as usual!

  • i love the design of the course

  • I love reading all of the ignoramus' comments about this horse.... dont even bother pretending like you know what you're talking about because your dumb questions just gives your lack of knowledge about show jumping away. LOL

  • @Iloveyew813

Indeed. Rodrigo is often considered one of, if not THE, greatest showjumpers out there... and this horse was his PRIMARY mount for years.

Common sense should tell people that the Pessoas-- with ALL of their knowledge, experience, and resources; wouldn't pick a horse that's deficient in ANY way, to be Rodrigo's Olympic, Du Maurier, Aachen, and World Cup mount... now would they.

The fact that they chose Tomboy for all those things, should make his capabilities/demeanor very clear

  • woww, he's amazing!! he has such a big stride, bet he's smoothhhh at butterrr!!! and i flinch every time he lands, thats gotta wreck his knees

  • This horse looks EVIL!!!

  • @MooseyBabez

...probably the dumbest comment out of nearly 500 thus far.

  • :O wow!

  • WOW!!!

  • That horse jumps so cute!

  • what i mean is that the horse only starts to speed up a few feet before the jump. is he supposed 2 do that?

  • @SparkleGrl123

    It's an optical illusion.

    1) he's not movingly slowly at all. Again, this horse has an *enormous* stride: he's moving faster than the average horse just based on the amount of ground he covers with each step he takes.

    2) he tends to lunge the jumps a bit, Rodrigo has to work to keep his front end off the fences. That's what you're seeing, not necessarily speed.

  • Arent show jumping horses supposed 2 have longer and faster strides?

  • @SparkleGrl123

Um.... you do realize that this horse's stride is absolutely enormous, do you not?

  • @ImmortalSynn what i mean is that the horse only starts 2 speed up a few feet before the jump. is he supposed 2 do that?

  • is it only me that thinks it, or does the horse look in somewhat pain?

if you watch carefully his movement and the shape he makes over a fence and he goes round with his ears flat back?

and before people start ranting 'he wouldn't jump if he was in pain.'

true, but top class show jumpers are MADE to jump and get a good hiding if they refuse at home and don't jump to the standard they should be.

not saying i'm right because the horse has incredible amounts of scope but its just a suggestion:) x

  • @ShowJumperBabeXxX

This same question has been asked here, and answered, no less than a dozen times. The answer hasn't changed.

  • @ImmortalSynn im not sad enough to sit and read through all the comments.

  • @ShowJumperBabeXxX

    Nor savvy enough, apparently. lol

  • @ShowJumperBabeXxX i personally do not believe this horse is in pain. You can tell he enjoys his work and has amazing jumping skills.

  • @ShowJumperBabeXxX I was asking the same question. Doesn't look happy to me either, but what do I know?

  • does he still jump how old is he?

  • @shazabrifrenzy

He's 28. So (obviously) no, he's retired at the Pessoa's facility in Belgium. He is indeed still alive though, which is cool. ;)

  • wow... this is potenzial

  • wow wow WOW!!!!!

  • what an amazing and powerful horse!

  • This horse is amazing I want it

  • @bangbangshoes

Well, he's been out to pasture for more than a decade now.... but I'm sure you could still have him, for the right price. :)

  • oh my god! He had so much air in his jump! wouldn't say no to that horse! :)

  • How high it is? Nice video!:) Love the horze!

  • @Ingridoganette

The heights are at FEI maxima:

    Verticals are 1.60m (5ft 3in). Oxers are same height, with a spread up to 2.0m (6ft 6in).

  • My God! This horse is Pegasus!

  • brilliant jumping, and my instructor said that horses can;t accomplish anything without anything in the mouth, or without gloves!

  • in the 13 years ive been riding.. i have NEVER seen somthing like that..

  • @RandiXIsXWreckLess

There's another one who jumped with almost this amount of power at every fence as well... I'll be putting some of him up as well. :)

  • Was that horse sired by pegasus?! Wow!

  • @Hantarrrrr

    Nice!

  • Woooow ;o

  • was his helmet even buckeled?

  • @crazywatergirl923 he dosn't hav a buckle, horse riding has changed over time, back then you didn't hav a buckle but now you hav to hav one when competing

  • @crazywatergirl923

It's probably not a helmet, it's a hunt-cap. Back then, regulation helmets were an option for those over 18. Only minors were required to have them.

Though, there were some custom designed helmets back then that were fitted to your individual head, and thus didn't require a chin-strap. They were made for people who wanted the hunt cap look, but still wanted safety. They were remarkably hard to pull off, despite not having a strap.

  • the comentators voice is ridiculously annoying.

  • @yerbs100

...so is such a trivial comment, what's your point? Lol

  • talk about scope...

  • @RoxiBee I know, right?!

  • POOR ANIMAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =(

  • @turpoemmelie

    ...grow up.

  • @turpoemmelie

Poor Animal? Why is it a poor animal? This horse probably loves his life. What horse wouldn't if they were treated like a king 24/7

  • would you mind if i used some of these clips?xx

  • @abiiloveshorseys27

While I appreciate you asking first, unfortunately I cannot give my consent to that, because it's not mine to give. It took me forever to get permission to use these, and I don't want to jeopardize that by handing then out without the distributor's approval.

  • omg! every one who rides showjumping would LOVE to have such a great horse 8D

  • Tomboy will always be one of the horse's remembered...Such power! And this was a great ride!

  • he sprawdles his hind legs out like a pitbull lol.

  • @bbbask

    "sprawdles"

    ...not sure that's a word, cher. ;)

  • @ImmortalSynn oh I know, i made it up " I do have my poetic licence to make up words ;P,

'splayed' didn't quite feel right , "sprawls" would have been best I guess for an actual word. lol its a georgia dialect thing.

  • @bbbask

    nice, lol

  • Good God that horse is a beast with invisible wings!

  • @SparkyArtz

    ...nice. lol

  • He could be pinning his ears because he feels that he is attacking the course. I rode a jumper that would pin his ears on approach, then prick them on landing. He loved jumping, so much that I think he thought he was attacking the jumps.

  • @quiterandom112

    haha, nice!

  • that horse doesn't look to happy though, wonder why :/ though what power .. AMAZING!!

  • its unreal how similar my horses jump is to this ! but mine is like the 14.1 version :L

  • @sball1995

And I believe it too... I've known plennnnty of ponies who jump like this, some as high as 3'6 or more. It's so fun/scary at the same time! lol

  • @sball1995 lol i was on a pony who did that too, scariest moment of my life lol

  • DAAAAAAAMN!!!!!! If I would have a horse like this, I would have EVERYTHING! :O

  • THIS horse is special! :O

  • wow.

  • its amazing. tomboy doesn't even need to run. he can just leap over them!1 truly amazing

  • It's official. I have just seen the most unorthodox but successful jumper in the universe. Damn that horse must be hard to stay with. I may have seen this, but back then I hadn't been riding long enough to think that there was anything funny about the horse's style!

  • props to rodrigo for even staying on i rode a horse who like to jump like this but over small jumps (50cm) and i almost fall off, but this high Rodrigo definetley has some skill

  • Rodrigo is an amazing rider. I don't think I could ever sit to Tomboy's funny, but super powerful jump and his massive strides. And...is it just me, or this is the exact same course Leslie Howard rode through on the chestnut mare, Extreme? I've probably asked this before...can't remember the answer though xD

  • @FieryHooves

    Correct, it is. :)

  • good god those jumos are like a walk in the park to tht horse!!! the horse is lookin like "are these jumps supposed to be hard for me cuz they aint" lol

  • @mightymouth4ever

Indeed. And just think, those jumps are "only" 5ft3in maximum height. He does the same over 6ft9in, when he won the Alberta Power SixBar, a record which still stands, in N.America. He didn't even bother tucking his legs over THAT! ;)

  • wow!!! imagin havein a go on tht beast hes absaloutly stunning done the job AMAZINGLY. Must of came off the best 2 horses and had the best trainer in the world to come out with a result like that!!!! Amazed!!!

  • imagine doing cross country with him.

  • @ThoroughbredLover1

    That'd be terrifying! lol

  • @ImmortalSynn

Defo but at least he would clear every jump :)

  • @ThoroughbredLover1

Dunno. This horse has an *E*N*O*R*M*O*U*S* stride... combine that with the amount of air/over-jump he'd typically place, and that could make some of the tight combos/bounces very difficult to successfully complete with him.

  • grazu :)

  • @karka282

    Sutinku

  • how can he stay on?? i couldnt even do that!!

  • @AngelKittySmilezz

I bet Rodrigo felt the same way... amazing how he could stay with it!

  • woah, must be hard to sit to but DAMN that hose can JUMP!!!

  • That was amazing (:

They jumped so well together !!

  • not the most stylish but, damn, he can jump

  • The reason he jumps that way is because he has a certain jump style. Tomboy likes to hang his legs over fences, but at the same time knows not to hit them, so he over jumps them just so hes comfortable. Believe me, it doesnt me hes 'ultra powerful' it just means that the horse works hard to be comfortable

  • @FCFEventRider

...until you see him do the same thing over a nearly 7 ft tall vertical. THEN the question of"ultra powerful" becomes settled, to say the least.

  • That horse has 1 amazing jump :)

  • how big is that

  • @Poll798Cp

How big is what, the horse or the jumps?

Anyways, the answers are 17hh, and 5'3"

  • @ImmortalSynn i ment the jumps but woah it must of taken yrs to learn to jump tht high

  • @Poll798Cp

Of course, but Rodrigo's something of the exception: he was routinely competing in grands prix by age 14, and rode in his first Olympics (1992) at age 19.

He was the youngest (equestrian) competitor that year. Interestingly enough, his father was the oldest that year too. :)

  • 'I've trotted him over 5ft a couple times'

Of course, as you do!! And to think Rodrigo was a young rider when he did this, looking at riders these days I'm not sure how many of them would be able to ride this horse and keep their equitation. Beautiful!

  • That horsie looks ANGRY :(

  • the feeling that rider must get over the jump must me unexaplainable. i thought my pony had a big jump!! LOL hes amazing...very focused. he doesnt look very powerful in his build but far out can he jump!!

  • Now that is an impressive horse! Looking at his build, I was pretty sceptical at first, but there's no denying that Tomboy is a true powerhouse! A well deserved placing. :)

  • @WarHorse16

LOL, a lot of people make that same "mistake."

If you look at his Du Maurier Limited International video, the commentator (Ian Allison) felt obliged to point out that he just doesn't look like the typical Irish Sport Horse (even though he's 3/4 Thoroughbred)... despite the fact that he's so amazingly powerful.

  • WOW he gained SO much air over those jumps!

  • @Amyp4Horses

lol, thattttttt's what made him famous!

  • Oh wow, this is that horse... he is freakin... BEAUTIFUL over the jumps. Little angry looking but I think that's the majesty to it. Very beautiful.

  • sieht aus al würde er vorne im gebisse zu fest gehalten, deshalb springt er mit allen 4 ab.

and it seems that something hurt him in his beck...

  • @NoNamexD08

Als er ein Fohlen war, fiel er uber eine klippe und verletzte seinen rucken.

Er erholte sich vollstandig. Allerdings entschied er sich nie dehnen den rucken, wenn er sprang.

  • Great jumper, yes. But he also looked extremely angry that whole course, anyone else see that? ears pinned, head shaking, tail wringing, he got over them, but I don't think he liked to.

  • @horseluvrxox

He's just a finicky sensitive horse. But I think his distaste was more against application of aids than the actual jumping. You'll usually see him object when Rodrigo has to forcefully apply/adjust a hand or leg aid, but not actually on the leadup nor followup to a fence per se.

While that's perfectly understandable, ya gotta admit: horses who just plain don't like to jump, don't set jumping records, win FEI grands prix, nor bring home Olympic medals. Tomboy did all the above.

  • @ImmortalSynn Fair point ;) Horses who don't like to jump usually just don't jump !

  • i like that horse

  • Bloody hell! Look at that horse! I love the way it really kicks up his hind legs when he goes over <3 What bit is that?

  • @MrMolyPoly

    It's not a bit, it's a Hackamore.

  • the rider is young yet great! and the horse is beautiful and talented - not even bucking or refusing!

  • @mckennarules9

...which is actually kinda interesting, considering that Tomboy actually liked to buck a lot. Very sensitive horse. But he wasn't a refuser.

  • @ImmortalSynn really?

  • @mckennarules9

Yep. You can kinda catch a quick view of his general attitude in the du Maurier Limited International video, I think he even gives Rodrigo a quick play-buck at the start.

  • @ImmortalSynn I guess your right

  • @mckennarules9

Eh, not really a bad t hing... buckers can be fun.

And he certainly was not a refuser-- hell, he could TROT 5ft fences! He had no reason to be! ;)

  • @ImmortalSynn have you seem a video of him trotting a 5 footer?

  • @mckennarules9

Tomboy, no... though interestingly enough, I *do* have a video of Rio Grande doing that.

When Tomboy set the North American 6Bar record, by jumping 6'9" with only two strides worth of momentum (a tied record that still stands today!)... Nancy Southern later asked Rodrigo if he was nervous about attempting that. He answered "No. Well, a little bit, but I've trotted him over 5ft several times, so I knew he could do it."

  • @mckennarules9 Sounds like an expensive horse :)

  • @mckennarules9

Perhaps. He had good breeding and obviously incredible scope+talent... but his career was so short, I'm not sure what he would've fetched. Maybe in his prime.

  • The scope on that horse. :o

  • i agree

  • wow what an amazing horse,

    what a jumper :D

  • That horse is not good for Show Jumping. It looks like he bucks when jumping. The hose is so small and the horse looks really angry. I think the horse would be great at Dressage

  • @98Equestriangirl

"That horse is not good for Show Jumping."

...you mean OTHER than the fact that he holds an Olympic medal and a world record (6-bar) that still stands today, 14yrs later, right?

  • amaziiiiiing!

  • The horse does not look happy...

  • Omg, my filly gets the EXACT same expression as this horse when she jumps. Its like they are just sooo determined to get over it =] Wow, they move the same and everything. How neat, haha. Absolutely amazing, he has such an insane amount of scope!!

  • This video brings back good memories. I was there that day and Brazil had their own little cheering section and they were so excited. They were a few rows behind me.

  • this sounds like a comedy show! i showed my dad this vid and he doesnt know horses at all and he was like cool and walked away. he totally didnt get why this was cute and funny!

  • @twireimoonshine7

...truth be told, I'm not exactly sure what the heck you're talking about either. lol

  • @ImmortalSynn hahaha sorry, what i meant was you know how the crowd is like laughing? thats why i said it sounded like a comedy show, and i was just pointing out that this wouldnt be funny to some one who didnt know that he was overjumping them.

  • @twireimoonshine7

"you know how the crowd is like laughing?"

They weren't laughing, they were gasping in shock...

  • Gosh that horse can sure boing!! Its like slow motion over the jump! That landing looks pretty rough though. And at the end he should pet his horse more instead of cantering around and holding his hat up. sheesh

  • This is amazing!

  • omg dat waz kl love da horse ;.....

  • He is so beautiful and powerful

  • wow he's beautiful. such scope!!

  • @Christiex2

    "wow he's beautiful."

Isn't he though?! Such a unique and amazing jumper!

  • Woww... this horse is crazy! and this rider is amazing! I would fly off xD

  • NO IDEA how he stays on that horse!

  • @MeAndMyGalloway

    skill!

  • I love jumping!! This years WEG is going to be awesome!!

  • @HorseSensation

Agree 100%. And according to Horse Illustrated, it's supposed to have an unusually high amount of TV coverage from mainstream networks... which would certainly be new and refreshing, for non-racing horse sports!

  • Looks like he's not quite sure how to get those legs up, and compensates by over-jumping. Lovely looking horse, though - must be really fit!

  • @eventingislife15

No. As discussed here a bit now, his jumping style originates from an initial reluctance to round out due to his youth injury. You can learn more about it if you read through some of the earlier posts, as it's already been rehashed several times.

  • Sawing horse's mouth ALL the time... Bof...Disgusting....

  • @fleur4198

    Well that's certai
